Law enforcement agencies in St. Kitts
are on the highest alert for todays
PetroCaribe Summit as some 18 Heads of Government along
with their
Ministers of Energy and other officials from Latin America
and the
PetroCaribe region will be present on the island.
Commissioner of Police Austin Williams told The Observer
that security levels
were not heightened as much as additional measures put
in place for the
dignitaries visit. Protocol dictates certain
measures of security be put in
place for the arrival and stay of these diplomats and
government officials.
According to our threat assessment, the threat level
here is low; however we
do have a number of foreign support law enforcement
personnel present on
the island for the Summit. Williams also confirmed
last weekends visit of a
Venezuelan military aircraft that brought support law
enforcement personnel
along with staff members of the Venezuelan contingent.
The Venezuelan jet made about 3 trips, transporting
more than 100 foreign
law enforcement personnel and other support staff to
work along with our
security team. Some of these persons will deal with
media coordination and
other aspects of the event.
Some of the approximate 260 dignitaries began arriving
in St. Kitts as early
as Wednesday for the Ministerial Meeting on Thursday
and the important
summit scheduled for today, Friday, June 12.
President of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela, His
Excellency Hugo
Chavez will Chair the 6th PetroCaribe Summit and St.
Kitts-Nevis Prime
Minister Hon. Dr. Denzil Douglas and his Minister of
Utilities and Public
Works, Hon. Earl Asim Martin will co-chair. President
of the Republic of Cuba,
His Excellency Raul Castro is also expected to be among
attending the
Heads of Government. |
