VIOLENCE ERUPTS AT FRIGATE BAY STRIP
By Sheena Brooks

This past weekend patrons at the Frigate Bay strip were forced to flee one of the more popular bars when a fight erupted between a number of young men. About 2 a.m. Sunday morning, a fight between several young escalated to the point where the crowd at Ziggy’s bar dispersed in fear.

“I was sitting at the bar when I noticed people started pushing their way towards the centre of the floor as if running from something. At first I paid no attention because some students were fighting earlier and I assumed they were at it again. By now everyone started peeping to see what was going on. I saw some young men holding back another one who seemed extremely agitated,” one patron told this media house.

The woman said the fight moved from the back area on the sand to the road in front of the bar. At this point she said, some persons attempted to leave the bar and get into their vehicles.

“Before I could get to my car the fight had come around to the parking area and a group of young men had gathered there so I was forced to wait it out at the bar. Suddenly a black car sped down the road and a man jumped out and started yelling something. I heard a single gunshot over the still blasting music. It seemed someone had called their boys for help so I ran to my car and left the scene,” she recounted.

The Observer spoke with Police public relations Officer Inspector Cromwell Henry who confirmed that an incident did occur at the normally sedate entertainment spot.

“We received reports of a disturbance on the Strip and dispatched units to the area. There appeared to have been a fight among some young men but the situation was dealt without incident or arrest,” he stated.

Henry also confirmed the witness’ report of hearing a gunshot but said none of the feuding men had discharged any weapon.

“The gunshot was discharged by an officer as a warning shot.” Several patrons commented at the time that it was “a pity” that nowhere seemed to be safe from the violence currently gripping the Federation.
