Cricket chief on Nevis,
Ronald Powell announced on Monday evening that the local
Cricket league for 2010 is all set to bowl off on the
afternoon of Tuesday 16th February at the Ramsbury grounds-the
unofficial Meritzer Williams Park.
Powell made the announcement
after a lengthy meeting with his executive when plans
for the league were discussed. In order to fully sensitize
the teams and to ensure that the various leagues are
run smoothly, the association invited all clubs and
teams to send at least two representatives to a meeting
at the Elquemedo Willet Park pavilion on Thursday
February 4, 2010. This included the female teams as
well.
At this meeting, more
details were expected be passed on to the various
teams and clubs pertaining to the proposed sequence
of the various leagues, code of conduct and registration
fees among other matters. Powell further indicated
that the league would commence with a brief opening
ceremony starting at 3pm and it is expected that a
new sponsor for the local cricket league would be
confirmed by that time and would be represented at
the ceremony.
Immediately after
the ceremony, a Nevis Cricket Association X1 will
engage a select team in a 10/10 match up which is
expected to be a real crowd pleaser. As a matter of
fact, Powell is indicating that his association team
would be difficult to select. A full calendar of events
for the cricketing year will also be released at the
ceremony. The tentative plan is that the second division
fixtures will be played on the weekend following the
grand opening. Matches will be played on Saturdays
and Sundays in the first instance.
In April, there will
be the second annual Coaching Cricket Festival on
Easter Saturday and the exciting Female Cricket League
is slated for June/July. All of the various forms
of the Masters tournaments as played last year will
also be continued. On the conclusion of the football
season, the activities will switch to the Elquemedo
Willet Park and sometime in March, the 1st division
fixtures will commence. The 1st division fixtures
will be played on the weekends and the 2nd division
fixtures will revert to Thursdays and other week days.
The Bonzo 10/10 league sponsored by the Nevis Cooperative
Credit Union will follow right after the 1st and 2nd
division fixtures are completed. Powell anticipates
that it will be a tremendous year for cricketers and
cricket lovers on Nevis.
