Olympians Meet with the Premier

The Special Olympians of Nevis received their day in the sunshine yesterday when they were treated to a grand motorcade through the streets of Charlestown.

The athletes who were a part of the successful Federation team which represented at the recent Latin American special Olympic games, started their motorcade at the school in Prospect, journeying through Brown Hill to the Main Road, pass the Administration building at Bath Village, through Main street Charlestown and on their return trip passed by the cheering students at the Charlestown Secondary school and made a very important stop back at the Administration building at Bath Hotel, where they were warmly welcomed by Premier of Nevis, Hon Joseph Parry.

The Premier took time out to warmly shake hands with each athlete and congratulated them on their achievements. Apparently one of the young athletes asked the Premier if now that they had returned with gold, if they would get some land. The Premier assured the athletes that his administration would do something more for them in honour of their outstanding performance.

"It won't be land, but it will be something meaningful," he stated.

As the children displayed their medals during the motorcade, members of the public warmly cheered them on and they obviously enjoyed the moment.

Back at their school, the children and parents were treated to a sumptuous lunch which climaxed a memorable day.

The Federation team returned with 17 gold medals -9 for Nevis; 15 silver medals-7 to Nevis; 9 bronze medals-2 to Nevis. A grand total of 41 medals.
