Cross Channel swim set to attract Large Gathering

According to Winston Crooke of the Team Nevis Cycle Club, the 8th annual Nevis to St.Kitts cross channel swim is set to attract quite a huge gathering this year.

The event which has been strategically placed to exactly one week after the grand Nevis Triathlon which will be held this coming Sunday, is expected to attract some more overseas participation. According to Crooke, when the Triathlon was advertised to overseas participants, they were also informed of the swim commencing just one week later and several of them have make their bookings to accommodate an extra week's stay in Nevis in order to participate in the event.

The swim will be held on Sunday 28th March commencing at Oualie Beach in Nevis and culminating at Cockle Shell Beach-close to the Reggae Beach Bar.

The estimated swim distance is 4 kilometres or two and a half miles.

Even though the top swimmers will be racing each other to the finish point, Crooke explained that the majority of participants normally register to attain that sense of achievement-'been there -done that'.

In the seven year history of the event, the youngest known participant to complete the course has been a nine year old Antiguan and the two oldest participants have been two ladies in their seventies.

Crooke is encouraging persons interested to participate and promises top security for the swimmers from start to finish as especially the weaker swimmers will be constantly monitored. They will be accompanied by at least twenty kayaks and several boats, all the way through. When asked about the possibility of sharks, Crooke explained that they have never encountered any sharks during the seven years of the event.

Quite a number of swimmers are expected from Ross University over in St.Kitts and the MUA in Nevis.

A donation will also be made to the Pink Lily Cancer Foundation, as a result of the registration monies received from the event.

Inter Primary Meet Press Conference Held

The Nevis Amateur Athletics Association (NAAA) held what has become its annual pre Inter Primary meet press conference yesterday. The event which was streamed live via the internet and also carried live on Choice Radio 105.3 FM was held at the Red Cross Headquarters at Chapel Street
, down town Charlestown.

The forum was chaired by NAAA representative, Halstead 'Sooty' Byron and present at the Head Table were: 'Mr. Athletics' himself-President of the NAAA, Lester Blackett, Representative for Chief sponsors, Gulf Insurance-Mr. Arthur Evelyn; Director of Sports-Lincoln Barry and Sports Coordinator on Nevis, Mrs Lydia Thompson Claxton representing the Ministry and Department of Education.

Brief remarks were given by Chairperson Mr. Byron and this was followed by remarks from NAAA Chief, Lester Blackett. He was quick to point out some brand new initiatives that will feature at the 2010 meet:

· The athletes' area will be located on the Eastern side or the hillside at the Elquemedo Willet Park, close to the cricket nets.

· The warm up area for the athletes will also be located close to the athletes' area; instead of the Villa grounds as has been the custom.

· Additional seats will be provided for athletes and spectators alike at the Eastern end of the ground.

He also explained that the meet will be carried live via internet and television due to linkages with Caribbean Cable Communications. The website to be utilized is www.nevispsc.com.

Each school is being encouraged to bring along a lap top to the meet and they would be provided with real time access to results and general updates as the meet progresses. Spectators who have lap tops will also receive the same privilege.

Mrs. Lydia Thompson-Claxton then spoke on behalf of the Ministry and Department of Education. She explained that it has been an honour for the Ministry to team up with the NAAA for over 18 years to host the event.

She admonished the athletes to demonstrate sportsmanship and discipline and reminded them that they were no longer showcasing their skills and abilities to the Nevisian population but to the entire world due to the upgrades initiated by the NAAA in terms of technological coverage of the event.

She was high in praise for chief sponsors Gulf Insurance and local representative, Mr. Evelyn. She also gave kudos to Director of Sports, Lincoln Barry and his staff for the tremendous work put in to enhance the tracks for the various sports meets held on the island, but especially for the work done at the Flats in Cole Hill, to make the St.John's Sports meet a reality.

Mr. Damian Hughes, Manager at the Caribbean Cable Communications which is a major player in this year's event, was also afforded the opportunity to say a few words. He indicated that his company was happy to be associated with the meet and happy to give back to the Nevisian community. He further indicated that his staff was in the process of placing fibre optic cable into the Elquemedo Willet Park which will facilitate live streaming of the meet and live television coverage.

Mr. Arthur Evelyn in representing chief sponsors Gulf Insurance expressed his joy at been associated with the event over the last 18 years-he himself being associated with his company for 32 years.

He was happy to report that the sponsorship deal for this year will be to the tune of $35,000.00 as was the case last year, having made a two year arrangement. He was unable to project what the new deal would be for next year but indicated that his company is so enthused with the event that no less a person than the Chairman of his company, based in Trinidad, Mr. Gerard Inniss will be an honoured guest at the event this year.

Director of Sports, Mr. Lincoln Barry explained that in previous years as an individual, he would support the school closest to him but that this year, because of his involvement with all of the schools; his hands were virtually tied in terms of personal support.

He expressed his dream of Nevis eventually having a 400 meter track and wished the meet every success and pledged his continued support, along with his staff.

Mr. Lester Blackett then took the audience through the paces with the new website and face book page Nevis athletics. The press conference concluded with the panel fielding questions from the numerous journalists present.

Charlestown Pre School Hosts Annual Sports Meet

The athletes at the Charlestown Pre School had their day in the sunshine yesterday at the Elquemedo Willet Park as their annual sports meet was held under the patronage of Mrs. Ianson Slater.

The children looked smart as they represented the three houses on show in the impressive march past: Red Green and Blue

A fair sized crowd was on hand to witness the races from the potato race, to thread the roll, to the sixty meters dash, right down to the scintillating relay races which climaxed the event.

At the end of the day, the final results were:

Green-284
Red-244
Blue-207

Today will climax the sports meets prior to the grand Inter Primary event as the Vern 'N" Llew School will host their annual meet under the patronage of Mr. and Mrs Kevin Barrett.

St James' ready for big contest

Coach of the St.James' Primary School, Shefton Daniel is calmly confident that his team will perform well in the upcoming Inter Primary sports meet, slated for March 24th.

"Training has been going well so far and I am sure about one Class champion", he stated confidently.

Daniel indicated that this year it will be all about strategy. The athletes will be utilized in such a way that they will bring more points to the team's overall success than individual glory. He is confident that his school will win in its zone and is inviting everyone out to what he anticipates will be a keenly contested meet.

He however would like to see the spectators in 'a little piece of red'. Red being the colour for St.James'.

Even as he conducted the interview, it was observed that he was being ably assisted by Sports Coordinator, Lydia Thompson-Claxton as the athletes practised running in the lanes at the Elquemedo Willet Park

The athletes themselves seemed all enthused as they gave a royal wave to the camera.

Belle Vue and Lyn Jeffers team up again

Coach Smith at the Belle Vue Int Primary school has indicated that there will be a combined Belle Vue and Lyn Jeffers schools' team for the grand Inter primary show down this year. This is the second year that this combination will be used, after last year's historic first.

"We don't have enough athletes at Belle Vue and they don't have enough at Lyn Jeffers, so we thought it best to combine the two", he explained.

He indicated that preparations are going very well but that he is limited in terms of choices, as the numbers are lacking.

"I just have to work with what I have", he indicated.

He is confident though that the athletes from the two schools will give a good account of themselves but has stressed that his main aim is for them to complete the races that they enter. 'Once they do their best, I will be very happy', he said.

He however lamented the fact that there seems to be a lack of continuity after the Inter Primary event. He explained that for the Inter Primary, a carrot is dangled in front of the athletes and all of them are pumped up for the event and exert all of their energies towards winning. However, after the Inter Primary, as the students progress into Secondary School and beyond, there are no more visible carrots to be seen and the athletes are not motivated to continue into a major athletic career.

He is adamant that with assistance from the private sector, combined with the efforts of Government, that incentives can be raised to help to motivate outstanding athletes. "Once they are motivated to continue to train up to age 17, they will be hooked for life and with the combination of Athletics and their education, at least some of them would make it to the world stage", he stated.

Clarke breaks silence and is ready for Test

Cricinfo

Michael Clarke has spoken publicly for the first time since his sudden departure from Australia's tour and his subsequent break-up with Lara Bingle. Clarke fronted a packed media conference at Wellington's Westpac Stadium, where he mentioned the support he had received from Shane Warne and insisted the media frenzy following him and his former fiancée would not affect the focus on his cricket.

"I have spoken to Warney," Clarke said. "I've spoken to a lot of my friends and my family. He's been a wonderful friend of mine for a long time and he was excited to see me back in New Zealand and wished me all the best for Friday's Test match."
Clarke made a hasty exit during Australia's one-day series when he flew back to Sydney to deal with his relationship issues, which were followed intensely by the Australian tabloid press. About 30 members of the media, some of whom will return home before the Test begins, surrounded Clarke but he said he was solely concentrating on preparing for the game.

"I made the decision firstly to go home but then to come back to New Zealand knowing that there was a big Test match starting on Friday," he said. "I knew I'd be capable to get up for that. Preparation has been very important to me throughout my whole career and it's no different now. Yesterday it was important to get back in the nets and have a good bat, see that red ball."

Coach Impressed with Players' attitudes

National Coach Stuart Clayton Williams while expressing disappointment at the fact that only 14 of the graded players showed up yesterday for their special league match at the Ramsbury grounds (MWP), also indicated that he was very impressed with the general attitude of the players who showed up.

Williams explained that when it was realized that there were only 14 players available, the players had a few options: go back home, have a practice session or play a simulation match, utilizing the players available. "What impressed me, is that all of them to a man wanted to play the simulation match-the guys want to play cricket", stated Williams.

Williams further indicated that the 'match' was played in a very competitive spirit.
The summarized results are:

Batting team one: 194 for 6 from 25 overs:

Carlon Smithen caught Nelson Boland for 3; Kejel Tyson caught Jurnel Turner 27; Tonito Willet bowled Trevier Smithen 100; Jason Campbell caught Trevier Smithen 8; Wasim Mintos Caught Jurnel Turner 17; Ian Byron bowled Trevier Smithen 14. Zavero Forbes was not out on 4 and Dymon Parris not out on 1.

Batting team two-182 for 7 from 25 overs: Javia Liburd caught Wasim Mintos 44; Kieron Powell bowled Zavero Forbes 15; Carlos Adolphus caught Zavero Forbes 29; Trevier Smithen bowled Wasim Mintos 1; Nelson Boland caught Jason Campbell 19; Adelvin Phillip bowled Ian Byron 1 and Junie Williams caught Jason Campbell 28.

According to Williams the situation will be assessed at a meeting scheduled for Monday 22nd March at the Elquemedo Willet Park and the next match will hopefully be played on Tuesday 23rd March at the same venue.

Charlestown Primary primed for six-peat feat

The students at the Charlestown Primary school have absolutely no doubts that this year at the upcoming major Inter Primary schools championships, they will be completing a historic six-peat. This was clearly stated as they were observed in training at the Ramsbury grounds (MWP). on Monday afternoon.

What is truly amazing is the support that is being extended to the children. Quite a number of parents were on hand assisting with the drills. In addition, various athletes were being enhanced in various disciplines from the proper passing of the baton to running in lanes by the Caines brothers of Titans Club fame and Stuart Clayton Williams.

Senior Coach Elquemedo Willet is confident that his team will do the six peat. He noted that there has been a lot of talk going around 'but talk is cheap', he laughed.
When asked about any of the athletes he would like to single out for the big day, Willet noted that he had at least 12 stand out athletes and he feels that that will be the difference on the big day because most schools are only talking about three or four athletes. "You can't win such an event with three or four athletes', he stated confidently.

Coach Carol Ward was more cautious. "Everybody knows what they have, so when we get together, we will see what happens; she stated. She however urged everyone to come out early as she is confident that it will be a very competitive meet.

The athletes then entertained by singing their battle song: We are the ones to rock the party-first place rock it up…"

Gingerland ready to burst Charlestown's bubble

Coach at the Joycelyn Liburd Primary School in Gingerland, Kurvin Wallace is confident that this year, he has the material to whip the five peat champions Charlestown Primary and literally 'burst their bubble'.

The Coach was interviewed along with his very enthusiastic Inter Primary squad on Monday at the Gingerland Recreation Grounds.

"They say they will be doing the six-peat but I more believe they are talking about six feet-'cause they are going under", stated the confident Coach.

He further indicated that his athletes are showing a lot more confidence than last year and apart from an excellent annual sports meet where a number of them excelled, they have been responding well to the training.

In response to the talk about three and four athletes, he indicated that he has top athletes in all of the categories.

Wallace also took time out to applaud his support crew and singled out Coach Latoya Bussue, Marvin Chapman, Gavin better known as 'Bulf', Teacher Tricia Williams who is fresh from a level one coaching stint, 'Budge', the Headmistress and Teachers at the school and the numerous parents who are assisting in various ways.

The children then concluded the interview with a song dedicated to the Charlestown crew: "Charlestown in the garden hiding---hiding from Joycelyn-Charlestown where art thou…?"

Barbados Stop St Kitts/Nevis in Warm up Game?

BARBADOS' women's footballers have received a great confidence booster ahead of their CONCACAF Gold Cup qualifiers.

The Bajan girls played well in patches and came out with a welcoming 2-0 win against St Kitts-Nevis at the National Stadium on Sunday night.

St Kitts-Nevis was competitive especially in their attack with skipper Caroline Springer and striking partner Kerisha Powell causing Barbados' defence a great deal of problems with their pace and skill.

Central defender Shonna Evelyn was up to the task and played with aggression, using her pace and intelligence to stop any attack St Kitts sent at Barbados.

Barbados took a while to find their passing game and gave away the ball easily on many occasions, especially in midfield.

They then resorted to the more direct approach of long balls which fell in the local team's favour, with tall central defenders Rozel Liburd and Marilyn Walwyn, easily butting the ball away.

Barbados took the lead just before the halftime whistle with a long range shot from left-winger Kerry Trotman.

Trotman came inside her marker and released a curling right foot shot into the "v" of the net to send the moderate Stadium crowd into a frenzy.

Coach Richard Forde introduced some new players into the game, obviously to assess his players before the start of the CONCACAF Gold Cup qualifiers which begin in Anguilla on March 28.

The game calmed down and both teams seemed to have settled into their own but before St Kitts-Nevis became too comfortable, lanky midfielder Tonia Jordan doubled Barbados' lead in the 57th minute via another long range effort.

CSS Edges out GSS in close Contest

The St.Kitts-Nevis Ministry of Sports Giant Malt Secondary Schools Cricket competition bowled off yesterday Monday 15th March.

At the Ramsbury grounds (MWP) the Charlestown Secondary School boys won the toss and sent their Gingerland Secondary counterparts in to bat first. The GSS team was bowled out in 27.3 overs for 128.

Kezron Archibald top scored with 35; Shenedo Liburd scored 19; Shawn Hanley 15 and Theron Bussue 10.

For the CSS team, Alex Williams bagged 4 wickets for 33 runs from 5 overs.

Nigel Hanley, Chavil Archibald, Ravi Sewdat and Clydre Smithen all got one wicket each.

CSS in response scored 129 for 8 in 18.5 overs. At one point they were cruising merrily towards the target at 114 for 2, when suddenly everything went hay-wire and the GSS boys fought tooth and nail right down to the final delivery. CSS managed to drag home on 129 for 8.

Ronnie Powell Jr 34; Dymon Parris 25 and Alex Williams 15 were the main contributors to the total.

For GSS, Rondell Chapman was impressive with his 4 for 25 from 3.5 overs, ably supported by Trevin Nisbett with his 2 for 5 from 2 overs.

The man of the match for GSS was Kezron Archibald
The man of the match for CSS was Alex Williams.

The two teams will next meet again at Cotton Ground on Wednesday 17th March and then again at Ramsbury on Thursday 18th March.

Maude Cross Prep Making Do with 'Second rated team'

As the grand Inter Primary sports meet draws closer, Sports caster Curtis Morton has embarked on a promotional tour with the various teams that will be taking center stage on the big day.

On Monday 15th March, he observed the Maude Cross Prep School team during their training drills under the watchful eyes of Coach Emmanuel Jeffers and Sports Mistress Cherry Anne Walwyn.

Coach Jeffers is actually hoping for the best at this stage as he indicated that some of the parents have not been fully supportive. "Right now we have what can best be described as a 'second rated team' because some of our best athletes will not be on show on March 24th" he lamented. He explained that some of the more talented children had indicated to their parents that they did not want to run and the parents had supported them. "If the children had told them that they did not feel like going to school, would they allow it? I think not. Small wonder we have anti social behaviour", he added.

He however feels that his team of thirty selected athletes will put on a good showing on March 24th and singled out Judene Tyson as the athlete to watch. "She was joint Victrix Ludorum last year and if she shows up on the day, we should be striking gold from the 100 right up to the 800 meters", he stated confidently.

Sports Mistress Cherry Anne Walwyn on the other hand was quietly optimistic that her team would do well. She is looking for great returns from Carlon Tuckett in the Kindergarten category and feels that Judene Tyson along with some other athletes will also make her school proud on the big day and may even help Maude Cross Prep to win the B division.

All Set for Major Triathlon Event This coming Sunday

Chief organizer Winston Crooke has indicated that all is in place for the major calendar event for the St.Kitts-Nevis Cycling Federation as they prepare to host the 8th annual Nevis Triathlon event. The big event is slated for this coming Sunday-21st March.

The action will commence proper at 1.30 pm but the athletes will be assembled in the TDC parking lot on the Bay front Charlestown from about 10.00 am engaged in finalizing registration exercises and their personal preparations for the event.

As per usual, the meet will involve three basic disciplines: The Tri-a-tri-or the novices, the Olympic and the sprint distance athletes.

The event will commence with the swim at Gallows Bay and the athletes will then make their way to the TDC car park where they will mount their bikes and journey down the Samuel Hunkins drive, en route to Cotton Ground. At Cotton Ground all of the athletes will make a turn and head back to their place of origin in Charlestown.
The Tri-tri athletes will do just one lap; the sprint distance athletes will two laps and the Olympic distance athletes will do four laps.

Crooke indicated that the route this year has been slightly altered so as to be more 'spectator friendly'. Instead of going all the way to Newcastle, the athletes will turn at Cotton Ground and repeat the laps where necessary, so that the spectators would be able to get a closer view as they compete.

On completion of the biking stint, the athletes will then run to the general area of the Four Season Resort and return to the Samuel Hunkins drive.

Crooke indicated that despite the economic crisis, the overseas registration has exceeded expectations. Athletes are expected in from St.Maarten, Antigua, St.Baths, Trinidad and Tobago, Barbados, Grenada, England France and the USA.

Additionally, quite a number of students from the Ross University in St.Kitts, along with students at the MUA in Nevis will also be participating.

There is also an additional feature this year where athletes and spectators alike can get involved in a 5K fun run from the Samuel Hunkins drive to the Four Seasons and back. There will be a small registration fee and persons registering will be making a contribution to the Pink Lily Cancer Awareness Foundation.

Top local athletes in Reggie Douglas and James Weekes both indicated that their present training is below par but that come Sunday, the spectators will be treated to something special as they will be giving it their all.

They are both urging the spectators to show up in their numbers as they need their support to will them on.

The flags of the various countries are already beautifully displayed at the Bay front and the general public on Nevis is guaranteed an electrifying treat, come Sunday.

Red Dominates V's and J's Sports Meet

Even as the general populace on Nevis continue to work overtime on preparations for the grand mini-Olympics event commonly referred to as the Inter Primary Sports meet, the attention has now turned from the Primary and Secondary schools to the remaining Sports meets to be held by some of the Pre schools.

The V's and J's Preschool was forced to abandon any thoughts of hosting their Sports meet at the usual Hard times grounds due to wet conditions there and inclement weather.

Even at the short notice, hundreds of spectators, showed up to witness engage each other on the track at the Villa ground in Charlestown.

The meet was held under the patronage of Mr. Roger Fyfield, parent and former champion long distance runner on Nevis.

There was just one major disappointment, as the races and their results were constantly affected due to the interference of over enthusiastic parents and other loved ones.

At one time the Headmistress threatened to abort the meet if she did not receive adequate cooperation.

Fortunately, the meet continued to its scheduled conclusion.

The overall results saw:
Red-champions with 258 points
Green-second with 244 points
Gold -third 234 points.

The Victor Ludorum was Jacquan Chapman of Green house with 33 points
The Victrix Ludorum was Kishawn Smithen of Red house with 33 points.

SPORTS
Reggie Douglas Is Nevis' 2009 Sportsman of the Year

Reggie Douglas

Reggie Douglas was once again recognised as Nevis' 2009 Sportsman of the Year, after first copping the title in 2008.

Known better for his triathlon prowess, Reggie decided to concentrate his efforts on cycling in 2009 targeting the OECS Cycling Championships as the event to launch himself at the region's best cyclist.

After holding on to his crown as OECS Triathlon Champion for the fourth time at the Nevis Triathlon, Reggie then claimed a first in the Grenada Tri and second in the Tobago Tri. After that he focused on cycle racing. Whilst in St Maarten over the summer he did more than 20 races for the team Mo Trouble, gaining valuable experience and mileage as he prepared for the OECS Championships.

In June Reggie competed in and won the SKN National Time Trial (TT) and Road Race (RR) Championships held on Nevis alongside female TT and RR Champion Kathryn Bertine. SKN had its new national champions.

The OECS Cycling Championships was being held in St Lucia and Reggie went with a full team to help him achieve his aim to take the top spot, but after a very brave fight he was beaten to the line and had to settle for third place, but it was the highest position even attained by a team from SKN.

His year was by no means done as he then went on to represent the federation at the Cycling World Championships in Mendrisio, Switzerland, together with team mates James Weekes, Monica Ceccon and Kathryn Bertine. This was Reggie's first trip to Europe and it was a most successful first visit, winning over the local fans and becoming the darlings of the tournament. Reggie and his team garnered incredible media coverage; the smallest nation made the loudest noise.

A long time dream of Reggie's was to race in a 24-hour mountain bike race. Immediately after returning from Europe he got his wish, competing with friends he made in SXM. Reggie competed in the Puerto Rico 24-hour MTB race and his team took third place.

A Stellar 2008 season was followed by an amazing 2009, and so it was recognised at the eighth annual WinnFM 'Inside Edge' Sports Awards held in St Kitts and sponsored by KFC. Reggie stood alongside fellow Nevis Sportswoman of the Year Tessil Nisbet, St Kitts Sportswoman of the Year Talissa Browne and 3 time St Kitts Sportsman of the Year Kim Collins.
