ATHLETICS
Heroes Welcome for Nevisian Carifta Reps
Nevisian representatives on the St.Kitts-Nevis 2010
Carifta team were treated to a heroes' welcome on
their return to Nevis yesterday. Former bronze medalist,
Tesril Nisbett who just missed out on another bronze
in the women's under 20 javelin throw, was warmly
greeted at the Charlestown pier by Minister responsible
for sports on Nevis, Hon Hensley Daniel, as she stepped
off the MV Sea Hustler just around 4 pm yesterday.
Gold medalist Adrian Williams had already returned
on an earlier flight but returned to Charlestown to
share in a brief but impressive ceremony held at the
Charlestown dock.
The ceremony was chaired by Permanent Secretary in
the Ministry of sports, Mr. Alsted Pemberton. He was
high in praise of the two athletes and indicated that
the gold medal won by Adrian Williams was a first
for Nevis at the prestigious event and the first for
St.Kitts-Nevis since 2003.
President of the Nevis Amateur Athletic Association
(NAAA), Lester Blackett, was overjoyed at the performance
of the athletes. He indicated that Tesril Nisbett
just missed out on a second bronze medal by a few
centimeters but lauded her for her fourth spot placement.
He referred to Adrian Williams' achievement as historic
and expressed confidence that the young athlete who
has at least one more year in the under 17's and three
more in the under 20 category, will break all of the
relevant records in the javelin throw in the future
events.
He also referred to Williams' fairy tale beginning
in the javelin throw, when one afternoon while training
at the Elquemedo Willet park, he made a throw, more
as a lark but was spotted by Owner/Manager/Coach Wakeley
Daniel of the Gladiators Track and field club who
said "wow' and 'the story has not ended yet',
stated Blackett.
Mrs. Carla Liburd, hard working member of the NAAA
spoke in her capacity as a representative of the Education
Department. She thanked God for the achievements of
the athletes and wished them every success in the
future.
Minister responsible for Sports on Nevis, Hon. Hensley
Daniel congratulated the athletes on behalf of the
Premier and his other cabinet colleagues. He utilized
a famous quotation by Winston Churchill in reminding
the athletes that 'success is 10% inspiration and
90% perspiration'.
"Your motto should always be: We come from small
but we tall", he told the athletes. He also assured
them that the entire Nevisian public would always
be behind them even if they were not physically present
in the stands wherever they are competing. He further
challenged both athletes to be role models to their
peers so that they could learn to utilize their energies
in a positive manner and away from anti social behaviour.
A shy Tesril Nisbett later declined the offer to speak
but Adrian Williams who was accompanied by his proud
Mom; Ms Glennette Williams took time out to thank
his Coaches: Wakeley Daniel, Denzil Parris, and Colin
Walters 'for being behind me'. He also expressed gratitude
for assistance received from NAAA chief, Lester Balckett,
his Mom-Glennette Williams and his 'other Coach',
Winston Smith.
At the close of the ceremony, Permanent Secretary
Pemberton noted that a special luncheon will be held
in honour of the two athletes this coming Friday-9th
April. Further details on the event will be released
later today.
Having won a gold and silver medal, the Federation
finished in seventh place out of 25 participating
countries at the games and was one of the top Organisation
of Eastern Caribbean States at the event.
Jason Rogers of St.Kitts got silver in the men's under
20 100 meter event and Adrian Williams secured gold
in the under 17 male javelin throw.

NCA 2nd Annual Coaching Cricket Festival deemed a
Success
President of the Nevis Cricket Association Ronald Powell
is of the view that the 2nd annual Cricket Coaching
festival hosted by his Association was a huge success.
"This year, in addition to the various legends
of local cricket who showed up to assist with the program,
we also had on board with us this time around, our sponsors
Digicel-the bigger, better network and they served to
spice up the proceedings with their incentives and numerous
giveaways; he said.
The proceedings which were held at the Elquemedo Willet
Park on Saturday April 1st got on the way with a brief
opening ceremony which was chaired by Vice President
of the NCA, Mr. Cartwright Farrell. Everyone present
joined voices in rendering the national anthem and Pastor
Joseph Morton delivered the invocation.
President Ronald Powell then wished all present a warm
welcome and thanked the legends for once again accepting
the invitation to assist his Association in developing
the game of Cricket on the island. He asked the young
cricketers present to absorb as much as they could and
to focus on what is right and good and to remember that
the more time they spent in doing right, the less time
they would have for wrong things.
Minister of Sports, Hon. Hensley Daniel also delivered
brief remarks and he indicated that he was pleased with
the operations of the NCA and that he had mentioned
in a cabinet setting that last year he had witnessed
the most cricket to be played in one season. He told
President Powell and his team to keep up the good works
and expressed that he and his Ministry was 'solidly
behind the NCA'. He then officially declared the Cricket
Coaching festival open.
The on the field action saw National Physical trainer,
Masefield Nisbett in charge of the warm up drills and
then renowned former West Indies all rounder Keith Arthurton
focused on fielding drills with the participants for
approximately one hour
Emphasis was also placed on the other disciplines as
follows: Pace bowling, off spin, leg spin, batting and
wicketkeeping. These sessions were generally coordinated
by National Coach Staurt Williams and Sports Coordinator
with the emphasis on cricket, Carl Tuckett.
Former St.Kitts and Leeward Islands all rounder, Victor
Eddy lectured to the participants on the art of playing
spin bowling, while former Kittitian and Leeward Islands
ferocious opening batsman and now umpire, Luther Kelly,
admonished the participants to learn the rules of the
game in order to reap success.
One notable addition to the legends this year was Johnson
Morton, former Nevisian wicketkeeper/batsman who focused
on wicketkeeping. He also congratulated the NCA on its
initiatives and wished the festival longevity and success.
Despite the fact that he currently resides in the USA,
he expressed the desire to be present at next year's
event.
Sponsors Digicel arranged
a bowl out competition for a big money cell phone
which was won by youthful medium pacer, Nigel Hanley-a
Samsung cellular phone complete with internet access.
Mr. Derrick Huggins, Manager of the Nevis Branch who
was actively involved in the day's activity, made
the presentation.
Meanwhile, Marketing Manager, Sharez laws had this
to say: "At Digicel we are always looking for
creative ways to enhance our relationships and sponsorships
within the community. We are the official sponsors
for the Nevis Cricket League 2010 and in an effort
to enhance their programs in Nevis we wanted to give
something back to their supporters and participants.
As such, we decided to give away a complimentary Samsung
B3310 handset which has Internet capabilities and
will definitely have the lucky winner connected to
the Best Network on island. This is the first of its
kind in Nevis but I can assure you, spectators can
look out for much more from the Bigger, Better Network
in the future."

Nevisian under 17's trounce English Visitors
A select Nevis under 17 team totally outplayed the
visiting Russell school team out of England on Tuesday
April 6th at the Ramsbury grounds (MWP). The visitors
won the toss and batted first but after a steady start,
could not interpret the combined guile and spin of
Trevin Nisbett and Wasim Mintos who left their innings
in total disarray.
At one point, Mintos was even on a hat trick but followed
up with a poor delivery-a full toss which was easily
kept out. The English team was routed for just 65
runs in 25.3 overs.
P. Rimma and J. Lester both top scored with 15 runs
each.
For the Nevis team, Wasim Mintos had the remarkable
figures of 4 wickets for 12 runs from 6.3 overs, while
Trevin Nisbett was equally impressive with 3 for 11
from his 7 overs.
Captain Duan Webbe then teamed up with Xeverier Cornelius
at the top of the innings to bring victory to the
home team-67 without loss at the close. Cornelius
was not out on 28 and Webbe was not out on 17.
At the end of the game, the visiting Captain made
sporting presentations of Russel school crests to
Wasim Mintos and Duan Webbe and also presented brand
new cricket hats to National Coach Stuart Williams,
Umpire Carl Tuckett and Head groundsman, Errol 'Jabal'
Tyson.

'The typical English
professional cricketer'
Cricinfo staff
Micky Stewart, the former Surrey captain, has described
Sir Alec Bedser, who died on Sunday evening at the
age of 91, as the "typical traditional English
professional cricketer".
"This is obviously a very sad day for me and
everybody who has been associated with Alec both during
his Surrey and England days," Stewart said. "I
first met him in my debut season with Surrey in 1953
when he was the senior professional and it was an
honour and a great experience to play with him.
"He was an incredibly accurate medium pace bowler
with great control and I know he was extremely proud
of the great Sir Don Bradman saying he was the finest
bowler of his type that he played against.
"He was also great friends to myself and my family.
Whenever there were moments of concern, Alec was always
the first on the phone to see that everything was
okay.
Paul Sheldon, the Surrey chief executive, added: "Sir
Alec was an iconic figure in world cricket. He upheld
all the great traditions of the game and represented
an era that has had a lasting impact on the history
of Test and county cricket. Along with his twin brother
Eric, he was one of the most recognisable characters
in cricket across the globe.
"In our sadness at the passing of one of the
worlds greatest cricketers, we can also celebrate
the end of an innings which brought pleasure to millions
- and who was respected by all who were privileged
to have known him."

go to the second distance thrown to separate the two
athletes with Williams at 57.42m and Craigg at 56.85m.
Williams took the lead with his fourth throw after being
in second place after round one and in third place for
the next two rounds. His series of throws were 57.42m,
55.14m, 56.17m, 57.86m, 54.35m, FOUL. In an interview

He then started training with Coach Denzil Parris and
with a few weeks left before Carifta Games was put under
the tutelage of National Record holder in the Javelin,

WICB Making Moves
to Transform Windies Cricket
Board outlines new, exciting format and seeks commercial
partnerships to transform the people's game from grassroots
to international arena
The West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) is in the marketplace
seeking the support of broadcasters, sponsors, tourist
boards and other commercial partners to ensure that
its programme of grass roots projects and regional
and international events are well publicized and portrayed
in the media, supported by the public and bolstered
by the key contributions of business communities in
the region and from further afield.
In a document entitled "Transforming West Indies
Cricket", WICB outlines its vision, in marketing
terms, of staging top-class international cricket
and revitalizing regional cricket with a new portfolio
of events, providing entertainment for Windies sports
fans and valuable rights packages for commercial partners
within the Caribbean region and around the world.
The document describes how the Board, embarking on
a new era under Chief Executive Officer Dr Ernest
Hilaire, has researched and evaluated its sponsorship
properties. It goes on to define its brand values
and lays out a range of innovative grass roots projects
and a schedule of new regional events to establish
a narrative around the Caribbean cricket season which
culminates in its traditional series of international
cricket each year.
Aside from the annual Regional Four-day and One-Day
tournaments, the Board is launching two spectacular
new T20 events and an exciting Beach Cricket project
that will help to rejuvenate interest in the game
particularly among children and the younger audiences
- aged 18 to 24.
Terry Blake, former Commercial Director of the England
& Wales Cricket Board who has been hired to lead
the marketing revival said: "These are exciting
times for West Indies Cricket. The senior men's and
women's teams are about to feature in the International
Cricket Council's World T20, the Under-19s came third
in the recent ICC World Cup in New Zealand; and the
WICB High Performance Centre is opening in Barbados
in May."
He added: "The men's team has a talented new
coach and this a perfect time for commercial partners
to support what I believe is an outstanding portfolio
of regional events that will attract interest around
the region - and in the case of our Regional T20 event
and Calypso Cup - from other countries such as North
America, United Kingdom and the Indian Sub-Continent."
The Regional T20 Tournament is slated for July 22
to 31, while the dates for the other events will be
revealed in the coming months.
Blake also noted: "In discussions with our regional
boards, governments, tourist boards and commercial
partners, we will decide on where these events will
be played and then introduce a management team to
deliver memorable experiences for fans and sponsors.
We have already had a healthy degree of interest from
the business community and we look forward to creating
valuable, cost effective sponsorship packages that
reflect the game from the grass roots right up to
the international arena."

St. Kitts/Nevis
Exact Revenge on Guadeloupe
Three unanswered first half goals gave St. Kitts/Nevis
more than revenge in their return friendly versus
Guadeloupe at Warner Park on Saturday April 3.
Even before the commentators could finish speaking
about the new all green strip that St. Kitts/Nevis
was wearing and the officials - James Matthew et al
looking smart in the new FIFA outfits Atiba Harris
who came all the way from Dallas for this game was
in the back of the net. The clock showed 1 minute
and patrons who were late to the Park now have to
wait on the replay to see the goal.
St. Kitts fielded one of their strongest team on paper
in a long while with three of the overseas based players
playing in the starting line up. Along with Atiba
Harris was Jevon Francis who is at home awaiting a
transfer from his base in Burma and Gerard Williams
who is based in Trinidad and Tobago.
The experience of these players gelling with the local
based players led by veteran George Isaac was a bit
too much for the Guadeloupe team.
A second goal was recorded in the 15th minute when
Atiba Harris was again instrumental. He was played
through down the left flank and worked off his marker
to place a cross deep to the right flank. The ball
was poorly cleared and allowed Alexis Saddler to win
the ball, get around his marker and play a low cross
to the near post. There Ian "Rompy" Lake
used superior foot speed to out pace his marker and
in two touches was able to beat the advancing keeper.
Guadeloupe was able to respond with a dangerous break
down the right side but the ensuing shot was ripped
over the bar and into the crowd.
The third goal was recorded in the 42nd minute. Again
the name Atiba Harris comes to the fore. He was the
one who got the second assist as he was able to find
Jevon Francis in a dangerous position. Francis in
turn went to the by line and gave an angled pass to
the unmarked onrushing George Isaac from midfield.
Isaac faked a shot, took the ball closer to the six
yard box and from an acute angle curled the ball into
the rook of the night close to the far post.
In the second half St. Kitts played a more cautious
game preserving their clean sheet. The play however
was dampened by a bit of rough unnecessary play by
the Guadeloupians and equally unnecessary was the
reaction to the play by Atiba Harris in particular
so the reaction.
St. Kitts/Nevis had an ideal chance to go further
ahead when a George Isaac long ball beat the offside
trap and gave Atis Hughes a 1 v1 situation with the
French goalkeeper. Hughes did everything well except
the final execution coupled with a brilliant save
from the French custodian

Kite Flying at the New Flats-a huge success
President of the St.John's Community Improvement Club
(SJCIC), Alsted Pemberton has rated the 23rd annual
kite flying competition hosted by his renowned organization,
as a huge success.
Despite rainy conditions early in the morning and
the overly delayed arrival of the kites, by 3pm there
was a bumper crowd at the newly flattened 'Flats'.
The event was being hosted at the newly renovated
site for the first time and Pemberton is convinced
that this would have helped to attract the huge crowd,
along with the various facets of the day's activity.
These included, kite flying, local traditional delicacies
such as conkie and cassava bread, cricket and a wide
variety of old and new musical hits.
At the end of the day, the winners of the kite flying
competition were announced as follows:

CRICKET
President appeals to past Cricketers
Nevis' Cricket chief, Ronald Powell is appealing to
all Cricketers who have represented Nevis in the past
to kindly be present at the Elquemedo Willet Park on
Saturday 3rd April in order to be a part of the 2nd
annual Cricket Coaching Festival. According to Powell,
letters were sent out to as many past players as possible
but some may have been overlooked. He is therefore asking
past players to note that even if they did not receive
a letter, they are all invited and will be accorded
the dignitary status they deserve.
The Coaching clinics will commence at about 10.00 am
but Powell has also informed that everyone needs to
be at the Park by 9.15 am as a brief opening ceremony
will be held at 9.30 am which will include the Minister
of Sports, Hon Hensley Daniel and a few of the past
players.
A new feature of this year's clinic will be a time set
aside when the younger players present will be formally
introduced to the past players and told of some of their
achievements.
Past players from St.Kitts of the caliber of Victor
Eddy, Virgil Newton and Noel Guishard, have also accepted
invitations to be present at the clinic.
The event is expected to be an all day affair and lunch
will be provided for the participants.

According to chief Coordinator and National Coach,
Stuart Williams, a few youthful English teams are
set to play a series of matches on Nevis over the
Easter weekend.
The three teams comprising of youngsters under 13,

and Tuesday April 6th.
Williams further indicated that the Nevisian young

as the young Englishmen are also well coached.
The general Public is cordially invited to view these

SJCIC annual Kite Flying Event on for Good Friday
Just in case anybody was wondering, President of the
St.John's Community Improvement Club (SJCIC), Mr.
Alstead Pemberton has indicated in no uncertain terms
that the annual SJCIC kite flying contest is definitely
on for Good Friday-2nd April 2010.
The man who has been designated by his peers as the
unofficial 'President for life', was happy to note
that this year would be historic in the sense that
it would be the first time that the general Public
would be able to enjoy the newly flattened 'Flats'
for an activity of this nature.
He indicated that registration for the event would
commence at about 9am and the judging of the kites
is set to commence at about 11 am. The actual kite
flying contest will commence at about 12.00 noon.
There will also be a range of activities which will
include Cricket and a set of fun games.
The registration fee is a mere $5.00 but the winners
will receive the usual healthy prizes:
$300.00 for the winners and $150.00 for the second
placers in all categories except for the book leaf
category where the winner will receive $50.00 and
the second placer will receive $25.00. These prizes
are compliments of the usual sponsors of the event,
the Four Seasons Estates.
Vendors will pay a
registration fee of $75.00-down from $100.00 in previous
years. There will also be the usual music, traditional
local foods and a general family day atmosphere which
Pemberton is insisting is not a day to be missed by
anyone.
