Taxi-man Braddy Shot to Death
By Sheena Brooks

The Federation's 10th homicide

Police are trying to piece together the details surrounding the apparent murder of popular taxi-man, Bradford "Braddy" Tweed.

According to official police reports, the body of the elderly taxi driver was discovered in the vicinity of Morgan Heights, Canada Estate just before 5 am Thursday. Police say he was found lying on the side of the road next to his taxi bus T 2587.

"Police received a 911 call about 4:45 a.m. Upon responding to the scene police discovered the body of Bradford Tweed of Branch Street, Newtown on the ground beside a taxi bus parked on the sea side of the island's main road. His body was lying on the grass and bore gunshot wounds," Police Public Relations Officer Inspector Vaughan Henderson told The Observer.

Inspector Henderson said the actual time of death had not yet been established as it was not known how long the body had been lying there.

Tweed, said to be in his late 60's, was well known throughout St. Kitts as a "friendly fellow" and one of the original taxi-drivers on the island. According to one person who said she had known him for more than 30 years, "He wasn't afraid to go out late at night. He used to say "Me nah 'fraid dem."

The Observer was reliably informed by another taxi operator that Tweed frequented the taxi stand at the Circus late at nights and that the night before his death, the vehicle was seen parked there sometime after 11. The man said he did not see Tweed but had assumed he was somewhere nearby.

Another source who was at the scene shortly after the discovery of Tweed's body informed this media house that there was no blood on the inside of the vehicle nor were there any apparent bullet holes. He said the vehicle was facing towards Basseterre. It was said that the taxi operator partially lived in the Cayon village.

"Whoever shot him must have done it outside the vehicle because there was no blood inside or outside the bus. It looks like he might have been shot on the ground," the source speculated.

Although unconfirmed reports indicate Tweed was shot in the head, Inspector Henderson would not confirm where about the body the man was shot or how many gunshot wounds were visible at the time of discovery.

Inspector Henderson said police could not speculate as to a motive for the shooting but an investigation would immediately commence.

In the past Tweed had served as Secretary of the St. Kitts Taxi Association and was a founding member and the first Vice President of the Liamuiga Taxi Association.
His death brings the Federation's homicide toll to 10, nine of which were death by the gun. One of the gun related homicides was a police officer involved shooting.

Police inform that there are no suspects in this latest shooting death.
