One aspect to this column will be a monthly selection of one person who qualifies to be a Personal Style Icon. I don't want to be misunderstood; these people are not to be copied. Personal style is just that, PERSONAL. It is (and should always be) specific to each individual. Though it is true that people from the same heritage, lifestyle and nationality may have very similar personal styles, there is always something that makes each person's style one of a kind.

The first person to be chosen, to stand in the spot light is Nailah Tyrell. Everyone who will be featured, like Miss T, will be selected because of having a unique style. They can be settled into their styles or always changing it. They may range from the extremely daring to the extraordinarily confident in dress. Nailah, specifically, was chosen for her well-honed balance between trend and whimsy and her ability to fuse fun and lightheartedness with a more somber business-like style.

We all know those salmon (or pink) two piece business suits, (with shoulder pads and all), that so many ladies love to wear to the office. Those pant or skirt suits that are so unimaginative that one doesn't even need to find a cute blouse or shirt because they can be worn without. Now, the likelihood of walking into the office where Nailah works and seeing her in one of these is extremely unlikely. Now, if you ever do, please, I'm begging you, give me a call so I may also go up there and get a good laugh!

It may sound cruel to laugh, but truthfully this would be hilariously wrong. Nailah would have had to have been forced into this suit against her will. Nailah's style is too expressive, too free-thinking and too original to be forced into a practical suit. Nailah's day wardrobe, Monday-Friday, is a wonderful mix of colour, conservative sexy and appropriateness. By pairing cute, simple, classic skirts with a range of chic colourful tops, Nailah, achieves a style which is office suitable yet fun.

Truthfully, there are some pieces in Nailah's wardrobe that even I thought to be a little weird, but when I see how this month's Style Icon mixes them into the rest of her clothes there is no doubt these pieces are absolutely fabulous. One such piece is a green/turquoise top which Nailah is very fond of. It has a high neck-line and basically no shaping in the front. The back, however, is a totally different story. Here we see what makes this piece interesting. With a column of covered buttons and loops running down the centre, from nape to waist-line, this top brings a classic feel. Yet because of the small glimpses of skin shown between each button this top becomes just sexy enough to still be considered office wear. Nailah usually wears this with a straight knee length skirt in a dark neutral colour. I chose this item to highlight because it is a true reflection of Nailah's character - a character which is sexy and stylish enough to chose high wooden heeled mary-janes for work, but smart enough to always have a cute respectable pair of slip on flats when her job requires her to trek across town.

With a range of trends in her closet, I can tell that Nailah's fashion choices are made solely on personal preference. With her head full of shoulder length locks and her trademark purple specs, Nailah most definitely is "one who succeeds" at holding true to her own personal style. And it is her unique mixture of Canadian style and Caribbean chic which got her chosen as this column's first ever, Personal Style Icon.
