Near Fatal 'Smash Up' at Pond Hill in Nevis
By Patrice Pemberton

Omnibus after Nevis crash

The sounds of metal crunching and glass shattering filled the air in Pond Hill, Nevis, at about 8:30 a.m. on Wednesday, April 7. The cause was a near fatal collision between a passenger omnibus and a pick-up truck.

The owner and driver of the omnibus, HA 155, was Mr. Garfield Walwyn of Hard Times and driver of the pick-up, PA 73, was Mr. Junior Lowe of Clay Ghaut.
As explained to The Observer by Sergeant James Hazel of the Traffic Department on Nevis, before the accident took place the bus was travelling to Gingerland, while the pick-up was on its way towards Charlestown. Up to press time, the exact cause of the accident was unknown.

"Both vehicles were extensively damaged," said Sergeant Hazel. "The driver of the bus suffered minor injuries: cuts, scratches and a painful neck."
Mr. Lowe, on the other hand, was not as fortunate.

"The driver of the pick-up suffered serious injuries to his face, head and chest," informed the traffic officer. "He was examined and sent to St. Kitts for a CAT scan."
Sergeant Hazel added that when Mr. Lowe returns to Nevis, he will be admitted to the Alexandra Hospital for surgery, as his jawbone was broken and his skull was fractured.

It was unknown at press time whether either of the two vehicles was carrying passengers when the collision occurred. Upon arrival at the scene, the police received information that the two drivers had already been taken to the hospital.

At the end of the first quarter, there were 67 reported accidents in Nevis -- 55 did not involve serious injuries; 11 had slight injuries; and in one accident, injuries were judged to be serious.
