| Traveling: Diabetes On The Move |
|
|
 |
| |
As I've traveled back to the United States
this week, I'm reminded that whenever you travel or
how far you travel - diabetes is always with us. Diabetes
never takes a day off.
If you are a newly diagnosed diabetic, you might be
afraid to travel. You feel much safer at home. You're
not interested in surprises, not when you are away from
your own kitchen, your own medicine cabinet and especially
your own doctor.
But once you have learned the rules and have had sufficient
practice coping with the variations of diabetic life,
then there is no reason you cannot travel anywhere in
the world like anyone else. But you must remember, you
have not left your diabetes behind. It travels with
you so the same rules apply whereever you are.
Here are some actions you can take to keep your diabetes
under control as you travel:
o Before leaving town, go to your doctor for a check-up
to be sure you are in good shape for your venture. Don't
go anywhere if your condition isn't stable.
o Always travel with some visible medical identification
affixed to you. Wear a bracelet or necklace stating,
"I am a diabetic."
o Take enough of all your medications to get you through
your entire trip, along with an extra supply just in
case your return home is delayed.
o Carry your diabetes meter and check your blood sugars
frequently so you can make the right decisions regarding
eating and medications.
o Pack your walking shoes. If your plane is delayed,
don't waste the extra time sitting and staring at your
fellow frustrated passengers; instead consider it time
for a workout. Walking will help reduce your blood sugar.
o Stay hydrated by drinking lots of water. In and of
itself, flying is dehydrating.
The stress of traveling, waiting in airports, not eating
at regular times and not having the right foods available
can be very detrimental to diabetes management. Be prepared
and make it easier for yourself when you travel.
Enjoy!
