The Winfes committee launched its fourth
annual event under the theme, "Peace and Love for
Sure, Winfes Turns 4," on Monday, April 12, at
about 10:30 a.m. in the Red Cross Building in Charlestown,
Nevis.
Stemming from the local name for the St. James' Parish,
Windward, 'Winfes' is short for 'Windward Festival'
and is held in that parish every year.
Pre-activities for Winfes are slated to be held on two
consecutive weekends commencing on Friday, May 7. These
include a radio talk show, health walk and church service.
The main activities, which are scheduled to begin on
Thursday, May 20 through Monday, May 24 (Whit Monday),
include a Candy Shop Lime, Kaiso Show and Family Day
at Herbert's Beach.
Mr. K. Patrice Wilkin, Executive Director of Winfes,
stated that this year's theme was chosen from entries
submitted to a slogan competition, won by Jamal 'Sky
Juice' Jeffers. He said it was felt that Mr. Jeffers'
slogan was very timely, given the difficult times that
we are living in.
This is the second consecutive year that Mr. Jeffers
has submitted the winning entry; last year his slogan
was "Enjoy de Lime, Forget de Crime - Winfes 2K9."
Minister of Culture Hon. Hensley Daniel commended the
three major sponsors of the event: Digicel, Carib Brewery,
and Delta Petroleum (Nevis) Ltd. He also spoke about
the importance of Winfes in terms of culture, as it
is a culture that makes everyone great.
Mr. Pearlievan Wilkin, Winfes Chairman, expressed his
sincere gratitude to God for His guidance and protection
over the years as the festival has been incident-free.
He also thanked the 'young revelers' for their usual
high standard of behaviour, along with Jamal Jeffers
for his contributions.
Mr. Wilkin also extended his gratitude to the police,
especially those situated at New Castle Police Station.
The thanks continued for those who gave their moral
and financial support and to those community members
who worked tirelessly "behind the scenes."
In the end, he urged the young men attending the event
to "create teams rather than gangs."
Mr. Antonio Liburd, Manager of the Festivals Secretariat,
was present and gave some brief remarks, in particular
noting that the success of this festival must be dedicated
to the Winfes committee.
Mr. Wilkin then related how the committee has given
back to the community.
In 2007, the genesis year of the festival, participants
spent 20 hours of hard work cleaning the Old White Hall
School. That year, EC$2000 was given to the Nevis Renal
Committee.
The next year, donations were given to the St. James'
Primary School and the New Castle Police Station.
In 2009, Best Buy received donations from the committee,
along with persons over 70 years of age being given
gift baskets and lights, purchased for the annual Brick
Kiln tree lighting.
Monetary donations have been given to the Pink Lily
Cancer Foundation and HOPE Nevis so far this year.
Before handing over their cheque to Mr. Pearlievan Wilkin,
Sharon Hobson of Delta Petroleum stated how pleased
they were to be named the Platinum Sponsor for a festival
that brings the people of St. James and neighbouring
communities together. They have been sponsoring Winfes
since its initiation.
The representative for the Gold sponsor, Digicel, said
that she liked the fact that Winfes members took the
time out to give back to the community. This was the
organization's first year as sponsors of the event.
The Diamond Sponsor, Carib Brewery, was not represented
at the launch.
K. Patrice Wilkin was grateful for the funds and said
that they are still accepting sponsorship.
Institutions under consideration for receipt of gifts
this year are the Flamboyant Nursing Home, Nevis Diabetic
Association and Violet O.J. Nicholls Primary School.
