Ways to Take Care of Your Diabetes

If you have diabetes, you'll want to do everything possible to steer yourself away from complications of the disease.

Here are some basic ways to take care of your diabetes:

o Test, test and test your blood sugars - if you don't test it is difficult to determine how best to manage your diabetes. Test your blood sugars at different times of the day, including 2 hours after the start of a meal. It is not enough to test only first thing in the morning.

o Exercise even if you cannot do the recommended 30 minutes, five days a week - a little is better than nothing and can improve your blood sugar numbers.

o Never skip your medication unless it is approved by your doctor. If you experience side effects, talk to your doctor. There are many different medications that can be tried.

o Be diligent about carbohydrate-counting. Measure your portions out so you can see what the correct portion size is. If blood sugars are normal, don't get lazy and think this means that you are cured of your diabetes. You still need to follow your diabetes management plan.

oSee your doctor every 3 months to go over your blood sugars, to be examined for potential complications, and to make changes as needed to your diabetes management plan. Have your lab work done a week before your scheduled visit, so you can go over the results with your physician. Schedule your next visit before you leave the office.
Get zealous about caring for your diabetes.

It will pay you back with a life filled with accomplishment and good health.
