Nurses set to make comeback in female Crciket league

The news is that the Nurses are back and rearing to go. This was established yesterday at a meeting held by the Nevis Crciket Association with representatives of the female cricket teams on the island of Nevis. As a matter of fact, the Nurses made a strong statement in having the highest number of representatives at the meeting. The meeting was held in order to finalize matters pertaining to the league.

President Ronald Powell who chaired the meeting congratulated the ladies present on a very exciting and competitive league last year and stated that it is his belief that this year's league will also be of a very high standard.

The teams represented at the meeting were: Champions St.James', Highlights Int; Brown Hill; St.George's; St.Paul's; St.Thomas' and the Nurses.

Certain matters were discussed and one or two issues were voted on and the following decisions were made and or ratified:

· The league will commence on the evening of Saturday 29th May starting at 6.30 pm with a brief opening ceremony. Immediately after the ceremony, the ladies will have their first experience in playing a six -a side competition which will be in a knock out format.

· The registration fee per team is $25.00

· The registration deadline is May 15th 2010

· Matches will be played mainly on Saturday and Sunday evenings commencing at 6.30 pm. Thursday will be used as a 'back up' day

· Two matches will be played on each game night

· Depending on the number of teams registered, the teams may be placed into two zones

· Matches will be played at the Elquemedo Willet Park

· Spectator charges remain the same as last year: $2.00 for adults and $1.00 for children

· Each team is permitted to show up on game night with a list of no more than 15 players and officials. Persons listed for teams on game night will not be charged at the gate

· The NCA will make a final decision on the prizes to be competed for after several suggestions were given during the discussions.

Meanwhile, a visting female Cricket team is due in from Antigua on the weekend of the 22nd to 24th May. It was finalized that the team will play against the top three placers from last year's league: St.James'; St.George's and Highlights Int and culminate with a match versus a Nevis X1. The Nevis X1 is due to be finalized by Friday 30th April with practice sessions due to commence sometime next week.
'Bring it' Bus comes to Nevis

After weeks of speculation as to whether or not some of the T20 promotions will be done on Nevis, the 'Bring it' bus crew arrived on Nevis yesterday with much fanfare.
The crew and bus travelled via the 1pm Seabridge and made several stops on Nevis. The first stop at the Charlestown Primary School was especially exciting as the children were very involved in the answering of cricket related questions and receiving T-shirts and other gifts. The crew also made similar stops at the Charlestown Secondary School, The Gingerland Secondary School and the sessions culminated with a major stop in the center of Charlestown, at the DR Walwyn Plaza.
The ever energetic Corporate Communications Manager, Mr. Clement O'Garro and his team interacted with members of the general public who were travelling from work. They even boarded passenger buses and interacted with the passengers. Cricket related questions were asked and T-shirts and a limited number of tickets were given away.

O'Garro indicated that the trip to Nevis was a very exciting and meaningful one and is convinced that quite a number of Nevisians will make the trip to St.kitts to see the females in action.

The ICC T-20 world cup bowls off tomorrow Friday 30th April with the West Indies taking on Ireland in Guyana.

The preliminary female rounds will be played in St.Kitts form Wednesday May 5th until Monday May 10th. Tow matches will be played on game days: The first match begins at 10.00 am and the second begins at 2.00 pm.

All of these preliminary matches are free but spectators must acquire tickets that are already available.

ATHLETICS

All set for 8th Annual Marathon

Chief Coordinator of the annual Church Ground marathon, Spencer Hanley expressed in an interview yesterday that all is set for the prestigious event which will take place on Monday May 3rd which is recognized as a public holiday in the Federation of St.Kitts and Nevis.

The 8th annual event will commence at 8 am at the top of Church Ground Hill, close to the home of Mrs. Myrtle Guishard and the athletes will journey north through Hamilton, down to Club Temin, make a right turn, head down the by pass road, make a left turn towards TDC, run through Charlestown, make a left at the bottom of Government Road, make a right turn just above the Federal office, head towards the Elquemedo Willet Park, make a left turn towards the Cultural Complex, then make a right turn towards the tennis court, turn left towards Crown Bakery, head to the top of the road and make a right turn next to the home of the Dyers family, make a right turn on entering the main road, make a left turn at the foot of the cemetery heading into Bath Plain, make a left turn at the bottom of the road heading into Bath Village, make a right turn at the famous tamarind tree, down Jericho Road, make a right turn at the foot of that road and head towards Reliable Motors.

The closing moments of the race this year however, will be slightly different from previous years. The athletes will head up the CSS Road but instead of climaxing the event in the Villa as has been the case in previous years, this time around the athletes will make a left turn through the small gate into the Elquemedo Willet Park and complete the course with a half lap in the park and ending in front of the main pavilion.

Hanley explained that the reason for the change was due to the fact that on that same day the CSS 60th anniversary committee will be hosting their sporting festival at the Elquemedo Willet Park and his committee from the Church Ground Sports and Cultural club is working along with the CSS committee to ensure that both events will not have a conflict.

As soon as the marathon is completed, the prize giving ceremony will be held and immediately after the prize giving ceremony, the CSS 60th anniversary sports meet will commence.

Hanley indicated that the emphasis will be placed on giving prizes to the most outstanding athletes. The usual prizes will be available. These include: cash prizes, appliances, top up cards, dinners for two, one night stays at local hotels etc. Commemorative T shirts would also be given to all of the participants.

Hanley is reminding all of the athletes to drink non alcoholic fluids starting at least 48 hours prior to race day.

Registration forms are available at the Nevis Tourism Authority and registration prior to race day will be $20.00 EC while registration on race day will be $25.00 EC.
Hanley also noted that some of the top athletes to look out for would be three times consecutive champion Alphonso 'Tazzi' Bartlette in the males and Miranda Fellows and Vernice Wattley in the females. He however indicated that champion athlete Shirvon Greene is indicating an interest in flying in for the meet from the US in order to give 'Tazzi' 'a run for his money'.

There is also the exciting prospect of a match up between 'Tazzi', Shirvon and the latest CSS long distance sensation, Kashka Forbes.

Up to this point a patron for the meet is yet to be determined but Hanley indicated that he is exploring the possibility of getting a former local champion athlete to feature on the big day.

Titans Ready for Antigua

Mr. Timothy Caines, President of the Titans track and field club on Nevis, indicated yesterday that his club is ready for an upcoming big event in Antigua. The team will journey to Antigua on Saturday May 1st in order to participate in the 'Sir Robert Samuels Classics". This is a track and field meet that will feature clubs from Antigua and around the region.

Caines indicated that he will be travelling with a full contingent of 26 athletes and 10 other individuals on the management team which will include a few parents.
The team was originally set to travel on Friday 30th April but this was delayed by one day in order to minimize accommodation cost in Antigua.

The Titans is expected to be represented in all of the track events from the 100 meters right through to the long distance races and the relays. There is not that kind of certainty for the field events but Caines expects at least one competitor for the javelin throw and one for the high jump. He is confident that his club will perform well and indicated that the athletes are keen and ready to represent Nevis.
He used the opportunity to thank the general Public and sponsors for their kind support and assistance and was especially pleased with the support given for the Titans luncheon and barbeque night out which were held recently.

The club will continue intense preparations at the Elquemedo Willet Park during the course of this week.

"Just another Opportunity"

Former West Indies opening batsman, Stuart Clayton Williams in an interview yesterday, referred to his appointment as Assistant Coach for the West Indies A team's tour to Bangladesh, as 'Just another opportunity to serve".

The exciting stroke player further indicated that he has a duo role on tour. Apart from being the Assistant Coach, Williams will also serve as the main selector on tour.
He referred to the squad as a 'really good bunch of guys' and noted that although he had no part in the initial selection of the squad, he felt that the selectors had done a good job.

He also noted that the Windies A team would have 'to hit the ground running' as they would be competing against two very competitive teams in Bangladesh A and South Africa A. The other two teams are already in Bangladesh while the Windies team is set to leave this weekend for their first appointment versus South Africa A on May 5th.

Williams however noted that due to his new appointment he will miss out on this year's Masters tournament in Antigua which is set to start in late around the 22nd of May. Williams successfully led the Nevis Masters to a comprehensive series victory last year. He is not happy with the preparation of the Nevis Masters squad so far for this year, but is hoping that when the final squad is selected, the defending champions will give a good account of themselves.

Meanwhile, President of the Nevis Cricket Association, Ronald Powell, has expressed congratulations to Williams on his recent appointment as Asst Coach for the West indies A team on his own behalf and on behalf of his Association. Powell referred to Williams' success as 'hard work paying off' and hopes that the young cricketers on Nevis would seek to model the former West Indies player.

BASKETBALL

Cotton Ground outlasts Hitters

The 2010 LIME SKABA league has started the way the 2009 season ended for Rams Hitters. The season has not come off to a very good start for the winningest team in SKABA the Hitters as they have followed their season ending 2 straight losses in the 2009 finals with a lack-luster opening night performance against the Antigua Warriors which saw them being down some 30 points when rain forced an abrupt end to the match. The multi-time champions continued their rough stretch on Saturday when they were humbled by the always dangerous Joseph Parry Cotton Ground Rebels.

Hitters played with the usual swagger and confidence that we have been accustomed to. However it was obvious that the absence of forward Shawn "Shabba" Forbes left a huge void in the Hitters offense and defense. At the end of the first half Cotton Ground held a very slim 23-22 lead over the Hitters.

Things remained the same for the 2nd half as 30 year veteran Trevor "Marty" Huggins once again led a consistent Hitters offense. The multi-time champions were however matched by the younger, bigger, more athletic Cotton Ground. At the final whistle Hitters found themselves falling to the Rebels 80-79 in what can only be described as a huge upset. This was Hitters 3rd straight SKABA league loss dating back to the finals last season where they were swept by the Horsford's Ghetto Roots. This is maybe the first time in the clubs History that they have lost 3 straight SKABA matches. This was the first time Cotton Ground has defeated the Hitters.

Hitters' Trevor "Marty" Huggins led all scorers with 22 points while Jenerson "Buju" France and Royden Browne led Cotton Ground with 20 points each.

Hitters next scheduled game will be on Sunday versus former Champions St.Pauls Hard Wine Tuff Knots while Cotton Ground is expected to take on 2009 "A" Division Champions Ghaut Bucks on Saturday.

GHETTO ROOTS AND ROOTSIE OFF TO GOOD START

The Horsford's Ghetto Roots Basketball Club is off to a good start for the LIME SKABA 2010 season as both of their teams, the SKABA Champions Ghetto Roots and the "A" division contenders Rootsie, recorded opening game victories.

The Rootsie came up against the formidable Monkey Hill Rockers XI in a keenly contested encounter. Both teams traded baskets for most of the game and ended the first half at an even 39-39. Things remained the same for the 2nd half as Jason "Shaggy" Norford for Rootsie and Calvin "Butters" Wallace for Rockers led their teams in a very exciting up tempo game. At the end of regulation the game was tied forcing an overtime period.

The overtime period was all Rootsie as they outscored the Rockers to win the game 83-77.

Jason "Shaggy" Norford led Rootsie with 24 pts while Calvin Wallace had 27 Points
for Rockers.

Defending SKABA Champions Ghetto Roots had similar fortunes as they easily disposed of the Shawn K. Richards Sandy Point Chappurtin. The Chappurtin brother duo of Taslyn Belboda and Javal Hodge played exceptionally as they were able to match the Ghetto Roots dynamic backcourt of Rymal "Bally" Browne and Levi "By-By" Fyfield. Belboda and Hodge gave the Ghetto Roots all they could handle however the Ghetto Roots simply had to much weapons and too much talent for the Chappurtin to be of any real threat. Despite losing SKABA MVP Browne early in the game and a lack-luster night from the exciting Fyfield Ghetto Roots still managed to make relatively easy work of Chappurtin with a 97-92 victory.

Taslyn "Tazzy" Belboda led all scorers with 27 points and 5 assists for Chappurtin while Carlos "Mucho Caliente" Monzac led Ghetto Roots with 21 points and 9 rebounds.

Ghetto Roots next game will be on Sunday May 2nd versus Fig Tree while Chappurtin will take on Cayon on Saturday May 1st.

Team Time Trial April 24th 2010

The second time trial of the year was a team effort, each two person team raced against the clock to cover 30/20/ or 5kms depending on the category the team rode in. 9 teams competed in total and the course was set from Oualie beach up to St James, back down to TDC, then finishing back at Oualie (30km) the shorter distances turned at the airport.

The No 1 ranked team was of course James & Reggie who had returned from Training in Tucson, Arizona just the day before; the trick for everyone else was to see how close they could get to the dynamic duo. In Time Trials the slower riders begin first, with the other teams being sent off at one-minute intervals, and in the Team event the idea is for the riders to share the work load by swapping the lead, giving the rider behind a chance to take a little rest before coming forward again, the finish time is taken from the 2nd rider passing the line.

Despite Reggie suffering with jet lag, they still managed to win with a two minute margin, completing the 30km course in 49:28 followed by Winston & Greg, in third was the team from St Kitts Laura Talaga and Royston Stevens. The Junior 30 km teams were led in by the Father/Daughter team of Matt & Sasha Lloyd in a time of 54:02, followed by the team of Prince Leader /Stalone Baker. For the 20km (Jrs) first place was taken by the combined team of Richard Leader and Ray Hubbe in 45:29 with Adjua Lloyd / Jessica Amory in 2nd place. Special mention to Andrea Berridge, who at 9 yrs old teamed up with her uncle Greg for her first TT, completing the 5km Cadet course in 18:38.

Many thanks to our wonderful timing crew of Collette and Marecia, the next event on the TNCTC calendar will be the annual 'RIDE OF SILENCE' on the 21st May, for more details of this and any other events see the club website www.neviscycleclub.com or ask any member for information.

'Bring it' bus comes to Nevis

Since it is an already established fact that Nevis will not be hosting any of the T20 world cup games-not even from the preliminary rounds, the natural question has been-"so what about the 'bring it' bus?"

Mr. Clement 'Monarch' O'Garro who is the Corporate Communications Manager for the ICC hosted event and who is based in St.Kitts, has confirmed that the 'bring it' bus which has been used as a marketing strategy for the upcoming games, throughout the region, will indeed be passing through Nevis.

The bus will leave St.Kitts along with its advertising entourage on the 1pm Seabridge Ferry service tomorrow Wednesday 28th April and should be in Nevis by 1.15 pm.
O'Garro further indicated that en route to Charlestown, the bus will make several stops along the way and T-shirts and other paraphernalia will be given out to the cricket fans.

It is planned that the bus should make its grand entry into Charlestown at around 4 pm to coincide with the end of the work day and will park in the vicinity of the DR Walwyn Plaza pumping musical entertainment for the fans and again there will be questions which when answered would fetch the lucky winners some fabulous prizes.
Apart from the T-shirts and other customized items, O'Garro is hopeful that by then, everything would be sorted out with the tickets for the matches scheduled for St.Kitts and these will be given away as well.

The general public in Nevis is cordially invited to be a part of this super affair.

(Please note-corrected story-Delvon Clarke only scored one goal-final score 2 goals to nil-Please ignore story sent yesterday)

Non Nationals Swamp Locals

The much anticipated Nationals versus Non Nationals Football show down took place last evening at the Bath Village Sporting Complex. One of the organizers indicated that the organizing of the match was a very frustrating process, as the unavailability of the Elquemedo Willet Park proved to be a critical issue. Another of the organizers indicated that the match was due to be played on Saturday 24th April but due to the fact that the Nevis Cricket Association was in the process of hosting a first division fixture, the match was postponed to Sunday 25th instead.

On Sunday, Director of Sports, Lincoln Barry indicated that the use of the Park could not be permitted in order to protect the cricket pitch and the general grounds. The organizer indicated that it was only fair as the Park has been handed over for use by the Cricket Association. "We should have done this a long time ago", he added.
The match was hastily changed to the Bath Village facility and at the end of half time; the score was 1-0 in favour of the non nationals who were inspired by the golden boot of Delvon Clarke. Jamaican born Stewart then sunk the final nail into the coffin to make it a final score line of 2 goals to nil, in favour of the non nationals.

Rain Curtails First division Fixtures

The scheduled first round of matches in the Digicel sponsored first division league was rained out and after a sunshiny start on Saturday, heavy rains on Sunday, put an end to a few intriguing contests last weekend.

At the Elquemedo Willet Park, Pioneers showed up with ten players, won the toss and elected to bat versus SL Horsfords Empire. They were soon in trouble as the pace duo of West indies under 19 speedster, Nelson Boland and Nevisian senior team quickie, Adelvin Phillip, teamed up to rip out the heart of the Pioneers' batting. Wasim Mintos and Charles 'Yellow man' Hendrickson then quickly wrapped up the innings. Pioneers all out for a disappointing 71. Nevis senior team players Jamoy Pemberton with 22 not out and Garfield Jeffers 18 were the only two players to show any form of resistance.

Boland bagged 4 wickets for 27 runs from his 11 overs; Phillip 2 for 19; Mintos 2 for 13 and Hendrickson 1 for none from his lone maiden over. At the end of day one, SL Horsfords Empire was comfortably placed on 106 for 3 with West Indies opener, Kieron Powell on 54 not out and Nevisian all rounder Trevier Smithen on 24 not out. Laughton Herbert with his off spinners was the lone wicket taker for the Pioneers team with his 3 for 54 from 10 overs. When the umpires officially called off the match on Sunday, due to the torrential rain, SL Horsfords Empire walked away with 6 points.

Rain also washed out the two other matches being played over the weekend: OMP Brown Hill engaged Pennyless All Stars at the Gingerland Recreation Grounds and Highlights Int took on Jessups at Cotton Ground. Scores were not easily forthcoming from the other games.

The next round of matches slated for May 1st and 2nd will see:
Jessups v OMP Brown Hill at The Elquemedo Willet Park
SLH Empire v Highlights Int at the GRG
Pioneers v Pennyless All Stars at Cotton Ground

Taylor, Daley and Mohammed ensure clean sweep
(Cricinfo)

Sri Lanka will be sick of Stafanie Taylor, Shanel Daley and Anisa Mohammed after their tour of the Caribbean is over. For the third consecutive game, the West Indies trio frustrated Sri Lanka and ensured West Indies swept the three-match Twenty20 series. Sri Lanka had done well to keep West Indies to 112, out of which Taylor made a match-winning 59, but their inability to cope with Mohammed's teasing off spin saw them slump to a 28-run loss at St Mary's Park.

Taylor, who in the previous two games had hit half-centuries, was again to the fore in testing circumstances. Sripali Weerakkody, bowling right-arm medium with the new ball, struck in the first over and then again to snap a brisk 40-run stand between Taylor and Juliana Nero. When Deandra Dottin edged Weerakoddy behind for 6, West Indies were 55 for 3 and Taylor had to reassess the situation. Shashikala Siriwardene, bowling her tidy off spin, and the left-armer Suwini de Alwis struck as well to keep the pressure up on the hosts. Taylor's 59 off 50 balls was the highest score after Nero's 24 and no other batsman crossed 6. Taylor was last out off the penultimate ball of the West Indies innings.

As it turned out, she had again done enough with the bat. Sri Lanka's chase got off to a good start with Dedunu Silva and Chamari Atapattu adding 40 in 5.5 overs, but Silva's run-out for 13 off the last ball of the sixth over changed the complexion. Daley, who had been impressive in the first game with 3 for 13 off her quota, induced false strokes in consecutive overs to have Atapattu (27) and Inoka Galagedara stumped. From here the chase completely fell apart at the seams and like West Indies middle and lower order has succumbed, so did Sri Lanka's. Only one other batsman reached double-figures and Mohammed accounted for the last four wickets in another outstanding spell of 4 for 8 from 3.3 overs.

West Indies 112 (Taylor 59) beat Sri Lanka 84 (Mohammed 4-8, Daley 3-13) by 28 run

Khan blitz downs Zimbabwe
(Cricinfo)

Zimbabwe's preparations for next week's ICC World Twenty20 took another hit as they were again beaten by West Indies A in a practice Twenty20 match at Progress Park. Having been put in to bat, Zimbabwe could only make 124 for 8, with the lower middle order flopping, and after having West Indies in some strife the visitors were undone by a whirlwind innings from Imran Khan.

The spinning pair of captain Prosper Utseya and Ray Price began will in Zimbabwe's defence of a small total, and left West Indies at 23 for 3 in the fifth over. Graeme Cremer then got the in-form Kirk Edwards to nick one before Chamu Chibhabha snapped up Shane Dowrich for 1, and that brought the allrounder Khan to the crease. Along with Assad Fudadin he began a sensible recovery before exploding to smash an unbeaten 60 from 33 balls, inclusive of seven fours and three sixes. He and Fudadin (29) shared a match-winning 84-run stand off just 53 balls and that put Zimbabwe on the back foot.

West Indies A 129 for 6 (Khan 60*) beat Zimbabwe 124 for 8 (Chibhabha 33, Shillingford 4-16) by four wickets

BCCI suspends Lalit Modi
(Cricinfo)

The BCCI has suspended Lalit Modi, the IPL chairman, for "alleged acts of individual misdemeanours", bringing down the curtains on one particularly unsavoury episode in the BCCI's history but very possibly leaving the door open for more twists in this saga. Modi's three-year reign was effectively ended moments after the conclusion of the tournament final in Mumbai on Sunday and he responded in melodramatic fashion with an emotional speech at the awards ceremony.

The suspension notice was served on him by Rajeev Shukla, a BCCI vice-president, at the conclusion of Sunday's game, with N Srinivasan, the board secretary, sending an email to the same effect. It followed a day of negotiations with interlocutors attempting to persuade Modi to resign but pre-empted a potentially flashpoint at Monday's scheduled IPL governing council meeting, which Modi had said he would attend. He is now officially barred from participating in the affairs of the Board, the IPL and any other committee of the BCCI and has 15 days to respond to the charges leveled at him.

Raina, Dhoni star in Chennai triumph
(Cricinfo)

MS Dhoni has added another feather to his captaincy hat. It was he who started the turnaround against a formidable Mumbai Indians attack, his deputy Suresh Raina capitalized on two dropped catches to score a crucial fifty, and Chennai Super Kings defended with aggression, smartness and flair to win the third IPL. Chennai were struggling at 68 for 3 after 12 overs when Dhoni got into the act: 100 runs were added in the last eight, and Raina scored 44 at a strike-rate of 200 after the first drop. The win concluded a fourth consecutive one-sided knockout in the tournament.
Pollard made a match out of this too: taking 22 runs off Bollinger's 18th over. Morkel bowled a tight 19th over, with a long-off, and a mid-off up in the circle and so straight it was almost behind him. Pollard hit a catch to him: it just highlighted which captain had got it right on the night.

Chennai Super Kings 168 for 5 (Raina 57*, Dhoni 22, Fernando 2-23) beat Mumbai Indians 146 for 9 (Tendulkar 48, Pollard 27, Jakati 2-27) by 22 runs

FOOTBALL

Clarke later returned after a brief substitution to nail yet another beauty and Jamaican Stewart sunk the final nail into the coffin to make it a final score line of 3 goals to nil, in favour of the non nationals.

A 1 Technology Basketball league head to Play offs

The exciting action in the A1 Technology Basket ball league continued over last weekend.

On Saturday evening, two games were played. In game one in a tight contest, Brown Hill Crisis got 72 points to the Polstars total of 65.

In game two, an ever improving CSS Black Mambas lost out to Church Ground Massives 81 to 26.

On Sunday night, The CSS Black Mambas played their best game yet. Cheered on by the vociferous crowd on hand, The CSS Black Mambas managed 41 points to the Ghetto Starz' 87. The second match turned out to be the thriller it was anticipated to be as a very determined Brown Hill Crisis closed the gap on the champion CG Rebels team, much to the joy of their cheering fan club but then watched in dismay as the more experienced team slowly edged away to post a clear cut lead at the final whistle.

Final score line: CG Rebels 57 Brown Hill Crisis 49

The organizers have indicated that the schedule for the play offs will be released by Wednesday of this week.

In related news, information received indicates that the CG Rebels started their campaign in the St.Kitts league with an exciting win over the popular Hitters team on Saturday night, by a mere one point.

Horse racing gets the green light

A very important meeting was held at the Red Cross Building on the evening of Saturday 24th April. This meeting pertained to the sport of Horse racing. One of the major issues dealt with was whether or not the persons present were interested in seeing the sport go forward. To a man, everyone present voted for the continuation of the sport on the island. In plotting the way forward there was some healthy and lively discussions. Another burning issue pertained to whether or not St.Kitts should play the lead role in the promotion of the sport. It was candidly pointed out that St.Kitts and Beaumont Park to be more specific, must play the lead role, as the Jockeys, stewards, announcers and other key players are shared between event venues on both islands. The major difference is that most of the significant players on Nevis are volunteers, while on the other hand, persons engaged in the Beaumont park fixtures, are paid for their services.

It was recognized that the last time that Nevis had an elected executive to run the sport, was three years ago when Mr. John Guilbert was the President of the august body. Since then, the hard working Emmanuel Jeffers has headed an interim committee that has hosted quite a number race meets.

A decision was taken that the persons present and other interested individuals will meet again on Saturday May 22nd at 4pm when an executive to guide the future of the sport on the island, will be formally elected.

ATHLETICS

Former Star Athlete in need of help

Former star athlete on Nevis, Lydia Jacobs-Pemberton is presently in need of financial assistance which would help in alleviating cost for an urgently required operation to deal with kidney complications.

Lydia was a former champion sprinter at the Charlestown Secondary School and majored in events ranging from the 100 meters up to the 400 meters.

President of the Nevis Amateur Athletic Association (NAAA), Mr. Lester Blackette, fondly remembers her as an outstanding athlete who represented Nevis in inter island meets in St.Kitts and also represented Nevis at Leeward Islands meets.
According to information received from family members, the proposed operation will be conducted in Cuba and even though she is expecting assistance from the Nevis Island Administration, the overall cost of the operation and related expenses will be extremely high.

In light of this an appeal is being made to members of the general public to as far as possible, make contributions towards the recovery efforts of the beautiful Nevisian lass.

Persons interested in making contributions can contact Mr. Eli James at telephone number 664-9739 or Ms Imelda Grant at telephone number 665-0218.

Members of the general public are kindly asked to give generously as the past athlete goes through her moment of crisis.

Female Cricket league set for May start

The Nevis Cricket Association met in a general meeting at the Elquemedo Willet Park last evening and dealt with certain matters of importance. One of the main agenda items featured discussions on the commencement of the very popular Female Cricket league which had a very huge following last year.

A tentative date has been set for the commencement of this year's league and that date is Saturday 29th May 2010.

The league is due to commence with an official opening ceremony at 6.30 pm which will be followed by an exciting six a side contest between the ladies.

Another important decision made pertaining the league is that unlike the situation as it was last year; this year's league will not be restricted to an emphasis on Parish teams. The league will be run in two zones and will be open to all interested teams.
Unconfirmed reports indicate that some of the new teams expected this year will include: The Nurses, Brick Kiln, Empire, another Guyanese team and another St.George's team.

This year the registration fee per team will be $25.00 and the league will culminate with a top four finals and a bottom four finals.

In light of this, the Nevis Cricket Association will meet with representatives of all of the interested teams next week Wednesday 28th April in order to finalize plans and prizes for the league and actual playing days. The meeting will be held at the Elquemedo Willet Park commencing at 4.30 pm.

Other matters discussed at the meeting included the concern that quite a number of the second division teams who have already completed their league have not as yet paid their registration fees. So too, some of the First division teams scheduled for this weekend's official commencement of the senior local league, have also not yet paid their required $250.00 dues. A decision was made that a concerted effort will be made to collect the outstanding dues. All Cricket clubs/teams that are still in arrears are kindly asked to make the required payments at short notice.

Last week's planned start to the Digicel first division league was rained out and the Association has decided that those matches will now be rescheduled to the end of the league and the matches originally planned for this weekend will proceed as per schedule.

Matches for this weekend-April 24th and 25th are:
1. Pioneers v SL Horsfords Highlights at the Elquemedo Willet Park
2. OMP Brown Hill v Pennyless All Stars at the Gingerland Recreation ground
3. Jessups v Highlights at Cotton Ground

Thieves Strike at the Elquemedo Willet Park

The Elquemedo Willet Park is well known for night time sporting activities but these are generally held under a full compliment of flood lights. On the evening of Wednesday 21st April however, one or more persons found enough time to be inside of the locked Park sometime during the night, carrying out activities which did not require the floodlights.

The bandit or bandits broke into the main pavilion Office of the Director of Sports, Lincoln Barry, an office which also hosts several sports officers and removed certain equipment which include a micro wave and a television set.

The said person or persons also totally destroyed the metal louvers at the scoreboard storeroom but did not remove any of the equipment there which includes a bowling machine owned by the Ministry of Sports.

Officials at the Ministry of Sports have indicated that the Police were duly informed and investigations are currently ongoing.

Any persons with information that could lead to the arrest of the perpetrator/s are kindly asked to make contact with the officers at the Charlestown Police Station.
It has been revealed that up to last evening, the Park was not under security guard.

Daley does it again as Windies girls

West Indies allrounder Shanel Daley continued her good showing ahead of the ICC World T20 Tournament, as she helped the regional side to a comprehensive win over Sri Lanka on Wednesday.

The left-arm seam bowler took 3-14 from her four overs as the Windies limited the visitors to 103-9 off their 20 overs at the St Mary's Park in Cayon, St Kitts on Wednesday. On Sunday, she made a fighting 23 not out to help the home side to victory in the first One-Day International on Sunday.

After Daley's excellent spell it was left to the batters to finish the job and Stafanie Taylor showed he class with a run-a-ball 50 not out as the Windies motored to 106-4 off 18.3 overs. Experienced middle-order batter Cordel Jack made 23 in a partnership of 46 for the second wicket.

The second T20I of the series will be played at the same venue on Friday while the third match will be played on Saturday. First ball is 2 pm (1 pm Jamaica Time).

The players are using the matches as preparation for the ICC Women's Twenty20 World Cup, which opens on May 5 in the Caribbean. West Indies are drawn in Group A, with England, Australia, and South Africa. Sri Lanka are in Group B with New Zealand, India and Pakistan.

Bollinger charges Chennai into final

Chennai Super Kings, boosted by a determined display from their bowlers led by Doug Bollinger, put an end to Deccan Chargers' run of five consecutive wins to qualify for the IPL final for the second time. They overcame a poor start, aided by a measured partnership from MS Dhoni and S Badrinath, and a late surge from S Anirudha helped post 142 in tricky conditions. Bollinger and R Ashwin then crippled Deccan in their chase, and the rest contributed to chip away at the middle order, to seal a hard-fought win.

Chennai Super Kings 142 for 7 (Badrinath 37, Harris 3-29) beat Deccan Chargers 104 (Symonds 23, Bollinger 4-13) by 38 runs
