After eking out a narrow win against
Sri Lanka in the first One-Day International on Sunday,
the West Indies women lost the second match by 38 runs.
The women took to the St. Pauls Sporting Grounds on
Tuesday morning with Windies looking for a 2-0 in the
ODI series ahead of their Twenty 20 warm-up matches.
Sri Lanka batted first and amassed 198 runs in their
overs, however Windies could only muster a disappointing
160.
Sunday's game was blemished with heavy rainfall and
overs were reduced to 33. Windies secured that win by
two wickets with a score of 133 for 8 against Sri Lanka's
129 in 33 overs.
Windies played a Twenty20 match on Wednesday and will
play two more on Friday and Saturday at Maynards Park,
Cayon at 2 pm.
The matches are a precursor to the International Cricket
Council's World Twenty20 Tournament; the first round
games being played in St. Kitts. Windies girls, ranked
5th in the ICC Twenty20 table, arrived in St. Kitts
on April 11 to begin a month-long training camp before
the tournament begins. They are joined by three other
Group A teams- England, Australia and South Africa,
along with Group B teams Pakistan, New Zealand, Sri
Lanka and India. At the camp they will work specifically
on strength and conditioning, fitness and agility, tactical
awareness, match simulations as well as improving their
skill levels.
After the Sri Lanka matches Windies will face the Pakistanis
in three T20s from April 26 to 29 at the Molineux Cricket
Grounds.
Leading batswoman Barbadian Deandra Dottin, who is nursing
a sore ankle, missed the Sri Lanka matches but team
coach Sherwin Campbell assured, "She will be ready
for the other matches and the T20 World Cup."
He expressed optimism that the team would be successful
at the upcoming T20 tournament and spoke highly of the
host country and venue.
"We played really well against England here last
year and we will be looking to pick back up the momentum
we established. We enjoy playing here in St Kitts. It
is a great home base for the girls. We have been here
for a week now and we are ready for what we have ahead
of us - the ODIs and T20s against Sri Lanka, the ODIs
and T20s against Pakistan and the T20 World Cup in May."
The ICC World Twenty20 Tournament kicks off at Warner
Park Cricket Stadium on May 5 with West Indies versus
South Africa at 10 am and England versus Australia at
2 pm. On May 6 Sri Lanka faces Pakistan in the first
match and then New Zealand will take on India. Australia
will come up against South Africa on May 7 with England
and West Indies squaring off in the afternoon. Saturday
will see India versus Pakistan followed by New Zealand
against Sri Lanka.
The first round culminates Sunday May 9 with Group A
battles between England and South Africa then West Indies
and Australia.
Officials with the local organizing committee are expecting
bumper crowds for the World Cup Tournament and say the
venue has met with ICC/ WICB requirements. Although
the first round matches are free, admission to Warner
Park will be by ticket only. Tickets were scheduled
to be made available this past Monday however Clement
O'Garro, Promotion and Corporate Services Officer, told
The Observer that "we are experiencing some
technical issues which we expect will be rectified shortly".
