Nevis Bus Drivers Appreciation Day Held for the First Time
By Patrice Pemberton

Bus Drivers Appreciation Day

The first-ever Bus Drivers Appreciation Day in Nevis was hosted by The Nevis Print Shop on Friday, April 23, at about 1:30 p.m. at the Memorial Square and D. R. Walwyn Plaza bus stops in Charlestown.

An affiliate of KVK Enterprises Ltd (based in St. Kitts), The Nevis Print Shop held this event under their sub-department label, 'Dare 2 Be Different International.'

KVK Enterprises Ltd. workers came over from St. Kitts to assist the shop's manager, Mr. Ron Daniel, and Raymoncia Maynard in their efforts. Specially designed T-shirts and refreshments were distributed to the bus drivers who were present at the event.
Mr. Daniel shared his thoughts with The Observer on this initiative.

"I think that it's a good thing. It's always important for businesses to give back and so I was very pleased upon joining the KVK Enterprises Ltd group to know that this is something that they do," he said.

He feels that bus drivers are always "overlooked", adding, "I think that it's a very good initiative to include them and to make sure that they feel special."
Daniel also spoke of the bus drivers' reactions to the gesture.

"I was pleasantly surprised … they feel good to be appreciated … it's good to know that you can bring a smile to their face on a hot, hot, hot Friday afternoon by providing a little something to 'cool off' and a T-shirt with the Dare 2 Be Different message," he posited.

Mr. Cornell Warner, Graphics Specialist for KVK Enterprises Ltd, explained to The Observer the reason behind appreciating bus drivers in Nevis.

"It would seem unfair seeing that we have a location in Nevis," he said. Mr. Warner further stated that if the bus drivers decide to not run for a whole day, then many workers would be unable to get to work.

One bus driver told The Observer that he felt heart-warmed by the initiative and wishes to see the event continue. Another one said that it's good to know that somebody acknowledges bus drivers. The driver said that it was a good thought and expressed gratitude to the event's organizers. This individual also wished to see the appreciation day continue, but in a bigger way.

Friday, April 16, was the second time the appreciation of bus drivers was held in St. Kitts, at the Ferry Terminal in Basseterre. Mr. Warner spoke of the reactions of the Kittitian bus drivers.

"They saw it as a generous offer because they are not normally appreciated by anyone … some of them were emotional," he informed.

Last year, the appreciation event took place in January. It is an annual event, which will more than likely be held in April again - in St. Kitts one week, and in Nevis the following week.

KVK Enterprises Ltd, located in Boyds Housing Development, Trinity Parish, was founded in July 1997 by Rev. Krystus Wallace, who is also the Chief Executive Officer.
The St. Kitts Print Shop prints customized T-shirts, mugs, banners, signs, and creates crystal plaques, among other things. The shop is located on Liverpool Row, Basseterre.

The Nevis Print Shop, which was opened on February 6, 2009, is currently located at the R. G. Solomon Arcade in Charlestown. According to Rev. Wallace, this location was opened because there was a dire need for a new type, level and variety of service in that area, and it had been constantly requested by Nevisians.

Another company subsidiary is "The CompuDoctors", located at Haynes Smith Village, Basseterre. It was opened in 2008 and provides professional cleaning services, computer training, and repairs.

The general opening hours for all four locations are 9 a.m. - 4 a.m. from Monday to Friday.

Dare 2 Be Different International is a youth ministry focusing on the message of being set apart as an individual, as opposed to following the crowd. They also challenge young persons to practice doing right, to become a part of sanguine activities, and to spread the Gospel using a "unique and outside-the-box" approach.

The ministry hosts many monthly activities such as rallies, parties and prayer-a-thons. Also, a show called "Youth Rap" is hosted on Dominion Radio (91.5 fm) and can be seen via their Web site: www.d2bdifferent.com every Saturday from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

Though Rev. Wallace was not present on Friday, he was the featured speaker for a rally held on Sunday, April 25, which was organized by the Anglican Young People's Association (AYPA) youth across Nevis. The rally began after 4 p.m. and finished after 6 p.m.

The youths marched from the Memorial Square through Samuel Hunkins Drive to the Nevis Cultural Centre in Charlestown. The centre was full, and almost all marchers had donned yellow shirts with the slogan "Signed, Sealed, Delivered, I'm God's!"
Rev. Wallace told The Observer his reason for being featured speaker.

"I believe [that] I am a voice for the young people, and I am also a great source of inspiration and encouragement," he informed.

Sponsors of the Bus Drivers Appreciation Day included TDC Automotive, Horsfords Automotive, SK Fashion Plus and St. Kitts Sea Turtles Monitoring Network.
