Youth with Baby in Hand Gunned Down
By Sheena Brooks

Police say they are searching for a number of young men in connection to the nation's 14th homicide, which occurred on Tuesday, April 27 in Upper Cayon.

At about 9:30 Tuesday evening an alarm was raised that there had been a shooting in Upper Cayon and as many as two persons had been shot dead. Investigations revealed that Elvis "Zunks" Roberts had been gunned down while walking with his girlfriend and their toddler within a stone's throw of their home. It was said that a band of gunmen opened fire on the unsuspecting family.

The Observer was reliably informed that the mother of the child, Mercier Wharton of Newton was shot in the arm during the onslaught. She was treated and released from the JNF hospital. Fortunately the toddler was not injured during the gunfire.

Persons on the scene described the killing as "execution style", relaying that the men not only chased Roberts while firing their guns but delivered the gang-style 'headshot' to seal his fate. Although police would not confirm where on his body Roberts was shot, reliable sources indicated that he received several shots about his body before dying at the scene.

Police Public Relations Officer Inspector Vaughan Henderson told The Observer that although police were in search of suspects, no arrests had been made up until press time.

He confirmed that a .38 revolver with three rounds of matching ammunition was discovered at the crime scene but said it was too early to tell if the gun was used in the commission of the crime.

"When the autopsy is carried out slugs recovered from the body would have to be compared to those used in the weapon to determine if that gun was used in the crime. In addition to the gun, a number of spent shells have also been collected from the scene and all articles of evidential value were taken into police custody for further analysis," he said.

Police continue to investigate this and previous homicides. There have been no arrests in any of the homicides occurring in 2010.
