More Artistes Confirmed for Music Fest
By Sheena Brooks

An already impressive artiste line-up for the 14th Annual St. Kitts Music Festival got a major boost with the confirmation of several additional local, regional, and international acts.

Local 'burst out' musical sensation Infamus will grace the stage for the internationally-acclaimed event along with fellow Kittitians, songstress Rolhensha, Rapster S.M.I. and Reggae/Dancehall act Jah Fire. On the regional scene, Capleton, Sizzla and DeMarco have also confirmed their presence for the show. These latest acts join Tito Jackson, Kenneth "Babyface" Edmonds, Third World, Bunji Garlin, Fay-Ann Lyons-Alvarez, and Ky-Mani Marley.

Festival Chairman Farron Lawrence told The Observer that the Organizing Committee was close to unveiling the nightly order of appearance for the artistes, but was facing a few challenges.

"We are having a few challenges trying to arrange the line-up on each night but we are working on it so that we can publicize the order of artistes. Most of it is from a production sequence standpoint, because you will find that it's not easy coordinating the schedule when persons have to fly in, especially if they are coming from another engagement and can't get in the day before they're scheduled to perform. We've already had to shift one performer based on timing," he said.

Lawrence also said that the order of appearance might not be publicized until all acts had confirmed, so that interested persons could select which night they would attend. He said there would be some changes with regard the way local acts were featured on a nightly basis.

"People like to know which artiste is performing on what night, but also when that artiste would likely be onstage. In the past the local acts went on first, but we found that was not fair to them in terms of getting the necessary maximum exposure. It didn't make sense to always have them open and perform to, say, 200 early birds. We will be doing it differently this year so people need to pay attention to the lineup to avoid missing any of the acts they are coming out to see," he noted.

That is not the only change to the production aspect of the Musical Festival however, as Lawrence explained that instead of each night being designated to a particular musical genre, there would be a blend of different music on all three nights.

"Before, we would have had the Thursday being Soca or 'jump up' night when the bands and Soca artistes would perform. That was followed by Reggae and Dancehall night on the Friday, and Saturday was considered international or R&B night. What we have done this year is to incorporate different genres each night, so you may find a Reggae act along with Soca and R&B or Pop or Rap on the same night."

The Observer questioned if the Chairman expected the fans to embrace or shun the mixing of the music styles after a long tradition of particular nights designated to one or two genres.

"We are hoping, of course, that people will support the change but you have to look at it from a business standpoint. One would want that everybody attends all three nights instead of fans of a particular music genre attending only one night. This is something that fans have suggested over the years, and we do take all the feedback into consideration so that we can continue to deliver a quality product that pleases the majority of fans," he said.

The pre-Music Festival promotions have already begun and Lawrence said there will be about three more before the actual event. During these activities fans will get a chance to do meet-and-greets with some of the artistes and win certificates for tickets, sponsor-related products, or Festival paraphernalia.

The names of four more acts are scheduled to be released in the immediate future and although he would not reveal any names, Lawrence said they would be local, regional and international performers.

The 14th Annual St. Kitts Music Festival will take place at the Warner Park Football Stadium on June 24-26. Tickets have yet to go on sale; however a price of US $40 nightly has been set.
