Nevis team ready for regional challenge/Local tournament to commence soon

Captain of the Nevis under 23 Netball team Datricia Morton, yesterday expressed confidence in her team’s ability to perform well at the upcoming OECS under 23 Netball tournament slated for St.Vincent.

The players are set to leave Nevis on Friday 11th and return on Thursday 17th June.

Ms Morton confidently stated: “We are ready and we crave the support of everyone. We intend to do our best”.

Trainer Masefield Nisbett expressed disappointment at the initial interest shown by the girls but he stated that their attendance at training sessions and punctuality have improved tremendously but felt that the six week training period was less than adequate. He however indicated that on the team’s return from St.Vincent, he will allow the young ladies a two week break and then he will keep the same players in training in preparation for next year’s tournament. Other players will be added as required.

Meanwhile, a release from the Nevis Netball Association indicates that the Nevis Netball Association local league will shoot off on Thursday 24th June at the Grell Hull-Stevens Netball Complex. Registration is presently ongoing and teams are kindly asked to contact members of the Association for registration forms which are already available.

Defending Champions off to Antigua

The Nevis Masters held one final meeting at Grove Park last evening as they finalized plans for the defense of their title in Antigua this weekend. The Leeward Islands Masters' tournament bowls off in Antigua on Friday 11th June and will climax on Sunday 13th June 2010.

The Nevis team will leave from the Vance Amory Airport at about 5.30 pm today and is set to return on Monday 14th June 2010

News coming out of Antigua indicates that the Host team which was beaten by Nevis in the finals last year has a much stronger team ‘on paper’ which includes the likes of Richie Richardson, Curtly Ambrose, Winston Benjamin and Vaughn ‘Hungry’ Walsh

The Nevis team however is not daunted by the task and the players are determined to bring back home the championship trophy. Even though the team will be missing star player from last year’s tournament Stuart Williams, an in form Merlin Liburd will lead the batting supported by a wealth of all round talented players.

ECB outlaws double-bouncing delivery

Cricinfo staff

Warwickshire's plans to introduce some innovation to bowling by using the double-bouncing ball during their Friends Provident T20 game against Derbyshire was quashed by the ECB, which outlawed the delivery. The Daily Telegraph reported the ECB issued a directive to county coaches and umpires that the ball, if delivered, would be declared a no-ball - despite not breaching the laws of cricket - for it was against the spirit of the game.

"Further to an ECB Cricket Committee recommendation, it is confirmed that the practice of bowling a ball that bounces twice should be disallowed with immediate effect. It is considered inappropriate for the image and spirit of our game," the Daily Telegraph quoted the ECB directive as saying.

The idea to use the double-bouncer is the brainchild of Warwickshire bowling Coach Graeme Welch. The decision to experiment with such a delivery was prompted by the accidental instance of Derbyshire off spinner Nathan Dumelow bowling a double-bouncing delivery that had then Leicestershire batsman Darren Stevens flummoxed. Though the ECB's decision would have thwarted Welch's plans, he received encouragement from the MCC, the guardian of the laws of the game, which declared the delivery legitimate. As a result, the delivery can be used in tournaments like the IPL or the World Twenty20, over which the ECB has no control.

"We don't think it is against the Spirit of Cricket or contrary to the Laws of the game," the newspaper quoted Keith Bradshaw, the chief executive of the MCC, as saying. "We see it as the same as the switch-hit and unless it changes the balance between the bat and ball we see no reason to change our view."

According to the laws, a ball can be declared a no-ball if it bounces more than twice and the umpire deems it to have been delivered intentionally. Law 24 states: "The umpire at the bowler's end shall call and signal No ball if a ball which he considers to have been delivered, without having previously touched the bat or person of the striker, either (i) bounces more than twice or (ii) rolls along the ground before it reaches the popping crease."

Welch said he was disappointed at the ECB's ruling and claimed the delivery required skill, just like the switch-hit, pioneered by Kevin Pietersen. The MCC had then deemed the shot legal for the same reason Welch feels the double-bouncer should be allowed. "Not just anyone can do it and it takes skill," Welch told the Daily Telegraph, adding the ball was of greater assistance to fast bowlers. "The margin of error is small.

"The batsman thinks it is a bouncer and by the time he has realised it is not he has cut down his reaction time. You need a bowler who can bowl out of the back of the hand and bounce it as close as he can in front of him so that when it bounces again it is on its way down.

"The trick is getting the pace right on the second bounce. I am disappointed about it [being outlawed]. Batsmen are smacking it out the ground and this is just the way the game is evolving. We are always trying to think of new things. I am a bowling coach and my job is to do that."

Manager pleased with squad so far

Nevis’ senior team cricket Manager, Malcolm Ramsey is quietly optimistic about his team’s chances in the upcoming Leeward Islands tournament. In an interview conducted last evening Ramsey stated that the Cricketers were gelling well together, there was evidence of camaraderie and they seemed to be adjusting nicely to his style of management quite well.

He further indicated that on the previous practice afternoons, there was an average attendance of 85% but yesterday, everybody showed up. A cricket Coach has not yet been appointed and the man originally air marked for the job, Staurt Williams is away on West Indies A team duty in England. However, Carl Tuckett has willingly filled the breach for the time being, ably assisted by Livingstone ‘Jabadar’ Lawrence.

Trainer, Masefield Nisbett is also presently concentrating on upgrading the fitness level of the Nevis under 23 Netball team which is due to fly out this week for the OECS tournament in St.Vincent. However, Coach at the St.Thomas’ School, Emmanuel Eddy Caines-Richards has also served to fill the breach quite well and the cricketers are responding well to the required drills.

Ramsey steered clear of indicating that his team could win the LI tournament this year, but indicated with a smile: “I see promising signs”. He was also not totally pleased with the batting display of all of his guards in last weekend‘s trial match, as some of them gifted their hands too easily but he is quietly confident that there will be an improvement in the upcoming match this weekend.

(if West Indies A do not make final – vs Lancashire at Old Trafford)

Kieron Pollard has put his domestic Twenty20 future ahead of his West Indies career by turning down a place on the one-day leg of the A-team tour to England in favour of his deal with Somerset for the Friends Provident t20.

Pollard, the hard-hitting allrounder, is due to link up with the county shortly but was offered a place on the West Indies A tour which includes a triangular series with England Lions and India A in June. However, Cricinfo understands he declined that opportunity because he isn't on a WICB retainer contract and doesn't feel an obligation to deny himself a lucrative spell with Somerset where the money on offer is substantially more than what he would earn with the A team.

"We are not impressed," a West Indies source told Cricinfo. "We had a lot of talks with him to try and persuade him otherwise and spell out his pathway for the future, but he wanted to play for Somerset instead. We were trying to help his cricket develop by giving him an A tour, but he didn't want to take up the offer."

Pollard is not among the 35 players contracted by the WICB and the players association, WIPA, has defended his move saying it would be unfair to deny him the chance to take up his county deal.

"He signed his contract with Somerset a long time before the squad was announced and he isn't contracted with the West Indies board," Dinanth Ramnarine, the WIPA president, told Cricinfo. "If he was he probably wouldn't have had a choice, but it would almost be restraint of trade to stop him going to Somerset."

Rain curtails play on final day
Cricinfo staff

Rain limited the final day's play to just 4.4 overs and the South Africans drew their two-day encounter with Trinidad & Tobago in St Augustine. During the little play that was possible, Dale Steyn got Lendl Simmons to edge behind. Earlier the visitors declared their first innings closed at the overnight score of 347 for 7.

South Africa's batsmen had cashed in on the first day, before bad weather intervened, with four batsmen scoring half-centuries. Alviro Petersen pushed forth his credentials as opener with 65, before AB de Villiers continued his fine run of form with 53 before retiring out. JP Duminy and Mark Boucher were the other half-centurions, with the latter finding touch as he prepared to take wicket keeping duties from de Villiers, who wore the big gloves in the limited-overs leg of the tour.

South Africans 347 for 7 dec (Petersen 65, d e Villiers 53, Duminy 51, Boucher 51*) drew with Trinidad & Tobago 18 for 1 South Africans 347 for 7 dec (Petersen 65, d (Steyn 1-11)

Glamorgan have the better of drawn game
Cricinfo staff

Glamorgan enjoyed the better of a rain-affected drawn fixture against West Indies A in Cardiff. The hosts were able to add just 46 to their overnight score of 126 for 6, for much of the morning was lost to rain. Nick James and Robert Croft struck half-centuries to take their team's score to 172 before declaring, and set West Indies a target of 283. In their response, West Indies reached 54 for 1 in 10 overs before play ended.

Glamorgan had bowled out their opponents for 151 in the first innings, securing a lead of 110.

Glamorgan 261 (D Brown 99, Rees 55, O Brown 5-92) and 172 for 6 (James 56*, Croft 56*) drew with West Indies A 151 (Walton 34, Croft 4-39, Ashling 3-18) and 54 for 1 (Smith 30*)

CSS dominates Surrey-Paving series

There was previously quite a bit of debate on the island of Nevis as to which of the two major Secondary Schools has the better Cricket team. On Friday 4th June the Charlestown Secondary school boys put the issue beyond doubt when they easily defeated the GSS team at Grove Park in the second of the Ministry of Sports-Surrey Paving Cricket series between the two schools.

Having won the first encounter in a tight contest, CSS sealed the issue when Alex Williams pulled powerfully over midwicket for four, to complete the victory for his team.
GSS batted first and scored 106 in 21.4 overs. Adrian Williams excited the crowd early with some scintillating shots before he was discomforted by a short ball from Nigel Hanley which struck him forcefully in the chest leaving an instant swelling. He responded by disdainfully pulling the same bowler viciously through midwicket before gifting his hand for 33. Prior to that however, two particular shots had the crowd at Grove Park humming: A cracking straight drive off the bowling of Chavil Archibald, which had the bowler scurrying for cover. By the time Archibald turned around, the ball was bouncing back off the Park wall at the Bath Hotel end. In the very next over, Nigel Hanley dragged down one which was supposed to be a bouncer but Williams stayed on the front foot and punched him through mid-off for four. Outside of his batting, Captain Bervis Burke played a stubborn hand for 22 but there was hardly any other resistance. Vijay Harinarine got 3 wickets for 19 runs; Cumberbatch 3 for 21 and Hakeem Harvey 2 for 20

CSS led by a remarkable opening stand of 90 between Captain Duan Webbe and Xavier Marshall eventually got to 109 for 1 in just 17 overs. Webbe was not out on 45 and Cornelius got 33.

In a brief but impressive ceremony chaired by Carl Tucket, Sports Coordinator and chief organizer of the tournament, the man of the match award went to Duan Webbe. This was adjudicated by Livingstone ‘Jabadar’ Lawrence. Webbe also grabbed the MVP of the tournament honours, adjudicated by Livingstone Lawrence and Errol Walwyn. Webbe was also naturally adjudged the CSS MVP of the tournament while his opposite captain, Bervis Burke took similar honours for GSS. The top players received trophies and Cricket gear compliments of sponsors, Surrey Paving.

Included in those addressing the gathering was jubilant Headmaster for CSS MR. Edison Elliot and a more subdued Deputy Headmaster for GSS, Mr. Shefton Liburd. Both congratulated the teams for giving of their best but used the opportunity to ask the young cricketers to quickly shift gears and focus over the weekend in studying hard in preparation for their promotion exams which commence today-Monday 7th June.

Nevis Trials off and running

The first in a series of trial matches to select the 2010 Nevis senior team in preparation for the upcoming Leeward Islands Cricket tournament, bowled off at Gove Park on Saturday 5th June with mixed results. Newly appointed Manager of the team, Malcolm Ramsey must have cringed when team one captained by Daynason Browne was bowled out for a mere 84 runs in their first innings. Duan Phillip top scored with 17; Aquito Willet got 14 and Trev Smithen 12. Jason Campbell bagged 4 for 12 from 9.3 mean overs and Adelvin Phillip got 3 for 21 from 7 overs.

Tonito Willet’s team then showed that there was no devil in the pitch by scoring 254 all out: Carlos Adolphus got 90; Shaheed Tyson 33 not out; Craig Johnson 27; Orilall 20; Nigel Browne 19 and Tonito Willet 18. The best bowler was Trevier Smithen with his 3 for 42 from 16 overs.

The Daynason Browne X1, second time around showed much more resilience and aggression led by a stroke filled 80 by the exciting Duan Webbe before he was set up by a Tonito Willet bouncer to be caught at square leg and the ever aggressive Carlon Smithen who wasted little time in getting to 57 before he was stumped off the final delivery of the day. The team score—184 for 3.

Tonito Willet and Wasim Mintos each got 1 for 19 and Zavero Cornelius got 1 for 48.

Immediately after the match, Manager Ramsey called his guards to a closed door team meeting.

Female Cricket League on the way

The 2010 Female Cricket tournament got off to its official start on the weekend with the actual league matches. On Saturday 5th June, Empire easily defeated GT United by 77 runs in the first encounter of the evening. Empire batted first and scored 120 for 3 in their 12 overs. Debutant Rozel Liburd thrilled the crowd with her tremendous power hitting to score 37 from just 15 balls. Catherine Joseph anchored the innings by batting through to be 36 not out at he end. Jasmine Maynard was not out on 11. For the GT team, Tursa bagged 2 for 13 and Mamo 1 for 19.

The GT team could only manage 43 for 6 in response with the top score coming from 21 extras and Nero getting 6. I. Dore got 2 for 12 and Rozel Liburd, Diana Browne and Jasmine Maynard, all got 1 wicket each.

Match two created some semblance of controversy as a sharp shower caused a delay in the proceedings. When the wet outfield was inspected, the St.James’ team was anxious to play but the Alex Stars (Nurses) refused to play citing possible injury to their players. The two teams received one point each.

On Sunday 6th June, Highlights Int comprehensively defeated Alex Stars by all of 75 runs in match one. Highlights batted first and led by a superb knock by league MVP in 2009, Ruby Chapman, scored 118 for 1 in 12 overs. Chapman secured the first half ton for the 2010 league by slamming 65 not out. Her opening partner, K. Hanley was more sedate with her 20 and Latoya Bussue was 12 not out. Cressy Mills got 1 for 28.

The Alex Stars in response seemed initially doomed for a score of below 20 but led by Nurse Siribu who originates out of Ghana, eventually got to 43 for 7 at the end of 12 overs, with every run being cheered as if the Nurses were indeed winning the game. Siribu who was 21 not out has an amazing story to tell: Prior to coming to Nevis to work, she had never even witnessed a cricket match, much less to participate in one.

However, the Alex Stars have made her into a pretty decent batter. For Highlights, Burkley, Charles and Rawlins all got 2 wickets each.

In match two, the anticipated thriller between Brown Hill and St.Thomas’ turned out to be a one sided affair with St.Thomas’ batting first and being restricted to just 77 for 6 in 12 overs. D. Lawrence top scored with 16; while Lydia Claxton and Gleniss Pemberton got 12 runs each. Claudia Saddler bagged 2 for 21 and Liburd 1 for 12.

The Brown Hill team was kept under pressure throughout and could not manage a single boundary. They eventually got to 57 for 7 from their 12 overs with extras contributing 19. Rosie Dunrod was not out 17. Denise Browne bagged 3 for 16; J. Browne 1 for 7 and Rosa Mills 1 for 7. St.Thomas’ winning by 20 runs.

The league continues this coming Thursday 10th June with St.James engaging GT United in match one and in what is anticipated to be a thriller, the two Gingerland teams in Super Rockers of Rawlins and Empire of Hanley’s Road will clash in the feature match of the evening.

Cayon and Challengers qualify for Divison 1 finals
by www.strictlysportsinc.com

Cayon FC and Challengers FC both former premier teams on Saturday earned the right to play – off for a spot in the Premier Division next season.

They both won their second game in the best of four play offs by the same margin but in contrasting styles. Cayon started slowly and had to come from behind to defeat Parsons 3-1, whereas Challengers jumped all over Parsons with 3 early goals before Parsons pulled one back late in the game.

In the first match Cayon took a while to settle down and during that time Raynaldo Finch found some space close to the goal after Cayon’s defense opened up. Finch notched home in the 8th minute. This seemed to have awoken the Cayon team and they immediately went to work missing several close chances and finally registering the equalizer in the 37th minute. Daryl Blackman was set up nicely through the center forward channel. He then beat his marker rounded the keeper then slotted into an empty net.

The second half was all Cayon as their custodian hardly touched the ball. During that time Jason Richards scored from an early right side cross in the 60th minute. Ruan Morton who came on as a substitute sealed the deal in the 87th minute after he finished off a Kurt Morton deflected shot.

In the second game Molinuex found themselves in deep trouble when referee Edwin Ible pointed to the spot after their defense (Super) brought down Challengers wing man in the box.

Gavin Burnham made no mistake from the spot to give an early lead. That lead was doubled when Kendale Liburd nodded home from close range after Challengers was awarded a free kick on their right flank. The game seemed beyond question when Gleason Burke added a 3rd before the 15 minute mark.

In their comfort zone Challengers missed quite a few more chances while Moliunuex tried desperately to show some resistance. They erased the shut out in the 87th minute when Eldon Liburd registered Molinuex’s lone item.

With one minute left in the game Jason “Shadow Jarvis was given his second yellow card ut by that time the game was already decided 3-1

The result meant that despite what happens in games # 5 and #6 of the top four play - offs Challengers and Cayon with face off for promotion. Since they are both unbeaten to date.

‘Walk for your health’-major success

Physical Trainer in the Ministry of Social Development, Masefield Nisbett is elated at the success of his novel idea ‘Walk for your health’ which became a reality on Thursday 3rd June 2010.

According to Nisbett the walk was geared to those persons who probably do not get enough exercise on a daily or weekly basis and recognizing the importance of regular exercise to the health and well being of all persons, he organized the walk so that such individuals could not only complete the walk, but significantly be able to socialize in the process.

The walk which commenced at the Cultural Center got off to a slightly delayed start, probably due to the fact that a shower of rain occurred around the previously scheduled 4.30 pm start time.

However, approximately fifty individuals showed up for the historic walk. These included: Hon. Carlyse Powell, Hon. Robelto Hector, ASP Seabrookes, FR. Ernest Flemming and his wife, Sargeant Hazel and a fair contingent from the Bank of Nevis.

The walkers congregated in solemn prayer rendered by Ms Earla Dyer prior to commencing the walk and at the end of the walk, Fr. Ernest Dyer, thanked God for his marvelous guidance and protection.

The route taken covered approximately 3.5 miles, starting at the Cultural center, heading towards Pinneys, up the By pass road, across ‘Pump road’, making a right at the round about at the Bath cemetery, heading into Charlestown and culminating on the Samuel Hunkins drive.

Nisbett indicated that some of the participants were so enthused that they made some very good times. Some of them not only walked but ran some of the way.

At the end of the walk, Nisbett also led them into another fifteen minutes of ‘cool down’ exercises. It is understood that many of the participants are asking that such a walk become a regularly slated event. Nisbett who is preparing to accompany the Nevis under 23 Netball team to St.Vincent for the OECS under 23 tournament shortly, was quick to indicate that he will give it some serious thought and it may well become a regular feature every other week. Nisbett also gave out Health pamphlets to all of the individuals who showed up.

Cricket

Sour Start to Female league

After the excitement generated at the recent opening ceremony for the 2010 female cricket league, the fair sized crowd that showed up a Grove Park had a major disappointment last evening when it was learnt that the scheduled first round of matches had been postponed.

There were a few showers of rain earlier in the day and unfortunately the pitch was not covered and was therefore too soaked for play. Suggestions of creating a temporary main square on a nearby grassy area were ignored and the matches were postponed to the end of the other fixtured matches.

The teams scheduled to play in Super Rockers, St.Thomas’, Highlights Int and Brown Hill, however took the opportunity for well needed practice on the Grove Park green.
Matches scheduled for this weekend are:

Sat. 5th June—6.00 pm-Empire v GT United
Alex Stars v St.James’

Sun 6th June—6.00 pm—Highlights Int v Alex Stars
Brown Hill v St.Thomas’.

New Manager sets the record Straight

Newly appointed Manager of the Nevis senior Cricket team, Malcolm Ramsey, yesterday afternoon set the record straight with the cricketers who showed up for a meeting with representatives of the Nevis Cricket Association.

Ramsey thanked the Cricket Association for demonstrating faith in him and his ability to guide the team and also congratulated the players present for making it into the trial squad.

He however indicated that the players would have to lift their game and demonstrate good work ethics. Punctuality and regularity at practice sessions will be closely monitored along with the general attitudes of the players. Ramsey further indicated that a team meeting will be held after each practice session for the purpose of evaluation and sorting out any kinks that may occur from time to time.

He stressed on the fact that Nevis has not won a major championship for eleven years now but felt that he could once again be part of a winning unit, as was the case when he represented Nevis as a wicketkeeper/batsman. He was also warm in his welcome of Chief of selectors Keith ‘Dis and Dat’ Scarborough and sounded an ominous warning that once he did not feel the presence of the selectors observing the players at practice and during trial matches, he would not recommend that they help to select the final team.
The meeting was chaired by President of the Nevis Cricket Association, Mr. Ronald Powell who referred to the glory days of Nevis cricket and challenged the players to bring it back to that level this year. He also asked them to upgrade their general attitudes on and off the field of play.

The Nevis senior trial squad will engage in a match this weekend –Saturday 5th Sunday 6th June 2010. The match starts on Saturday at 1.00 pm and 10.00 am on Sunday. On The players are asked to report to Grove park at least one hour before game time. The following weekend, the Association is hoping to commence a three day match which will run from Saturday through to Monday, starting at 10.00 am on all days. This will help in the preparation of the players for the upcoming three day Leeward Islands’ tournament.

South Africa whitewash hosts in tense finish
Cricinfo

The humiliation was complete, but only moments after it seemed West Indies had done enough to avert it. Partly misfortune but mostly indiscipline cost them the fifth and final ODI in Port of Spain to ensure South Africa swept an ODI series 5-0 for the third time against West Indies. The wickets of half-centurions Jacques Kallis and JP Duminy had helped the hosts wrest control of the game, but Jerome Taylor's inopportune injury, Dwayne Bravo's poor death bowling and Kieron Pollard's nervy last over deprived the hosts of an elusive face-saving win.

South Africa 255 for 9 (Kallis 57, Duminy 51) beat West Indies 252 for 6 (Chanderpaul 67, Deonarine 53) by one wicket
