Inez France Pre School-New Inter Pre school Champs on Nevis
Amidst some controversy towards the end of what was indeed a wonderful meet, the Inez France Pre School took championship honours at the fourth bi- anual inter Pre school sports meet held on Nevis. The action took place at Grove Park on Wednesday 16th June under the auspices of Patron for the day, Mrs. Jacqueline Brookes-Jeffers. The other officials comprising the party taking the salute at the march past which signaled the commencement of the meet were: Hon. Robelto hector; Principal Education Officer-Mrs. Lornette Queeley-Connor and Ms Florence Moving-Education Officer responsible for Early childhood Education.
Some eight schools participated: Charlestown Pre school sponsored by the Hon Robelto Hector; Gingerland Pre School sponsored by the Nevis Cooperative Credit Union; The Inez France (St.Thomas’) Pre School sponsored by the Four Seasons Resort; Vern ‘N’ Llew Pre School sponsored by the Nevis Pre Schools’ Teachers Association; Maude Smith Pre School sponsored by William Quarry services; Maude Cross Pre school sponsored by Brown’s construction; V And J’s Pre school sponsored by Hurricane Cove Bungalows and Naomi’s Pre School sponsored by the Hon. Patrice Nisbett.
A fair sized crowd was on hand to witness the event, especially towards the end of the work day as parents and other close relatives of the athletes came out in an enthusiastic show of support.
Defending champions Charlestown Pre School defended their championship trophy right down to the final race and at one point was leading the second placed school at the time by all of 35 points. However, the Inez France Pre School and the V’s and J’s Pre school increased the heat in the closing stages of the meet and in the final analysis, the Charlestown Pre School was forced to relinquish the trophy won in 2008, as the Inez France pre school edged them out by a mere one point.
Had there not been some controversy at the end of the final race of the day, the results may have been even more interesting. The meet concluded with two novel events: Open girls and open boys 200 meters, referred to as ‘marathons’. The girls race went fairly smoothly with one of the Inez France’s representatives, crossed the finish line first. In the second race however, it was later stated that quite a number of the children had cut through the track, essentially taking a short cut. After much heated debate as to who had really won and how the race should be factored in as regards points, it was decided that the two last races would be scratched. The Inez France Pre School was therefore adjudged the 2010 champions and immediately the celebration began. This was led by the Teachers ably aided by Sylvester Pemberton.
The final point standings were:
1st place and champions for 2010—Inez France Pre school-185 points
2nd –Charlestown Pre school-184 points
3rd --V’s and J’s pre school-126 points
4th--Gingerland Pre school-120 points
5th—Maude Smith pre school—77 points
6th—Vern ‘N’ Llew Pre school-75 points
7th—Naomi’s Pre school—42 points
8th—Maude Cross Pre School—27 points

NOTICE
All Executive members of the St. Kitts-Nevis Table Tennis Association (SKNTTA) are reminded of the Executive meeting on Saturday 19th June at 7,00 pm.
The main item on the Agenda is the High School's Table Tennis Tournament to be played shortly.
All members are urged to not only be present, but also to be on time.
Result - División 1 Best of Three (3) Finals - Game 1 - Cayon FC vs St. Thomas/Trinity Strikers FC.
Some eighteen (18) teams and eight (8) months ago, the long and trying journey to gain promotion to the Digicel St. Kitts-Nevis Football Association's (SKNFA) 2010-2011 Premiere Division, began.
Now, that journey is about to come to an end. As a matter of fact, it is down to just one (1) game, may be two (2).
In the first (1st) game of the Division 1 Best of Three (3) Finals played at the St Pauls Sporting Complex last Tuesday 15th June, St. Thomas/Trinity Strikers FC from the Western part of the island, the Old Road region to be exact, stomped their rivals from the Eastern side of the country, with a two (2) goal to one (1) victory.
Cayon opened the scoring in the 8th minute when Tyrone O’loughlin found the back of their opponents net.
St. Thomas/Trinity Strikers, the team boasting of kicking Cayon out of the Premiere Division a few years ago, also vowed to be the team that would keep them from getting back up for next season, and came back with a goal of their own by Kendal Liburd nineteen (19) minutes later, in the 26th minute.
Both teams after coming out of the locker room at half time with the scores deadlocked at one (1) goal each, decided to get it on very early in the second (2nd) half, and it only took four (4) minutes for the St. Thomas/Trinity Strikers to break the deadlock when Quincy Marsham put a bulge in the old onion bag in the 49th minute, compliments of a goal keeping error by Samuel "Phipps" P.
Cayon kept on throwing everything they had, everything they could have come up with against St. Thomas/Trinity Strikers in a desperate attempt to force the game into the two (2) fifteen (15) minutes a half extra time, but the guys from down key West had other ideas.
Through some stern attacks on goal and a couple of big saves by their keeper, Strikers were able to defend their one (1) goal advantage to the end of the game.
The penultimate game, or perhaps the final one, will be played at 7pm tomorrow/today Thursday 17th June at the St Pauls Sports Complex.
If a game three (3) is necessary, it will be played on Saturday 19th June also at the St Pauls Sports Complex.
Only one (1) team will be promoted to the Digicel 2010-2011 Premiere Division, and with Strikers having a one (1) game advantage, Cayon will have to win back to back matches to do so.
Will St. Thomas/Trinity Strikers put a dent in and an end to Cayon's dream for a second time or will the guys out of Green Valley have the last laugh.
We will have to wait until after tomorrow's game to find out.

Chesney Hughes handed Derbyshire contract
Cricinfo staff
Chesney Hughes, the Anguilla-born left-handed batsman, has been awarded a three-year contract with Derbyshire. Hughes, 19, made his first-class debut in the County Championship this season and in four games has shown a lot of promise, scoring 393 runs at 65.50. He holds a British passport, and his contract with the county runs till the 2013 season.
"Chesney Hughes has shown a great deal of promise from the moment he joined the club and he deserves the reward of a new contract," said John Morris, Derbyshire's head of cricket. "We are delighted that he has committed to Derbyshire for the next three years as he continues to develop as a cricketer."
Derbyshire chairman Don Amott lauded Hughes' signing, and also took the opportunity to point out positive developments off the field such as the recent opening of a new 1,800-seater stand at the County Ground.
"Retaining our young talent is a crucial element in that success and I'm sure that all Derbyshire supporters share my excitement in continuing to watch Chesney develop his considerable talent for the next three seasons," Amott added.

Poor pitch blamed for low scores
The Nevis Cricket team continued preparation for the 2010 season with a trial match played on Sunday 13th June. According to Manager of the team, Malcolm Ramsey, the pitch was wet and the batsmen struggled to come to grips with the situation.
Daynason Browne’ X1 batted first and could only muster 89 all out in 26.1 overs. Andre Browne was the stand out batsman with 28 and Captain Daynason Browne scored 15. The batting team was undermined by the spin duo of Nigel Browne who bagged 3 for 11 and Wasim Mintos who scalped 3 for 14.
Tonito Willet’s X1 eventually struggled home to the winning target with a score of 93 for 7 with B. Orilall top scoring with 17, Carlos Adolphus getting 15 and Nigel Browne 13.
Aquito Willet got 2 for 18; Trevier Smithen 2 for 20; Daynason Browne 1 for 6 and Ian Byron 1 for 30.
Meanwhile Ramsey indicated that there has been a change in the focus of the players due to the fact that recent information received indicates that the Leeward Islands three day tournament previously planned for July, has been postponed and the immediate tournament plan is a T-20 Competion which will serve to select the Leeward Islands team to participate in the West Indies T-20 competition set for July 22nd to 31st.
He indicated that his team is adjusting well to the change but he is still looking for some better batting performances from the batsmen.
As the players practised on Monday afternoon, it was obvious that they are gelling well together and actually seem to be enjoying their game at this time.
Canada to participate in Caribbean T20 tournament
Cricinfo staff
Canada will be the overseas team participating in the inaugural Caribbean Twenty20 tournament between July 22 and 31 in Barbados and Trinidad, Cricket Canada has announced. Apart from Canada, the tournament will include seven regional teams - Barbados, Trinidad, Guyana, Jamaica, Windward Islands, Leeward Islands and Combined Campuses and Colleges.
The winner will be the sole representative from the West Indies in the Champions League Twenty20 in South Africa in September. Last year Trinidad and Tobago, the winners of the Stanford 20/20, qualified for the inaugural Champions League in India and finished runners-up.
Ravin Moorthy, Cricket Canada's first vice-president, said the tournament was a great opportunity for supporters to fly down from Canada.
"Fans across Canada are anxiously anticipating this event and hundreds are expected to flock to the Caribbean to watch the action," he said. "The world's biggest T20 stars, including Chris Gayle and Kieron Pollard, will be taking the field against Rizwan Cheema and the rest of the Canadian stars. This is a great moment for Canadian cricket and something we should all embrace."
The eight teams will be split into two groups of four, with each team playing three games in the league stage, and the top two teams in each group qualifying for the semi-finals. Barbados will host the first eight games from July 22 to 25, while the next eight will be held in Trinidad from July 28 to 31. August 1 is the reserve day for the final.
Unadkat's 13 sets up comprehensive win for India A
Cricinfo staff
Jaidev Unadkat blew West Indies A away for the second time in the match and set up a comprehensive six-wicket win for India A at Grace Road, their first victory on tour. The left-arm seamer from Gujarat, playing his maiden first-class game, added six more to his first-innings haul to finish with match figures of 13 for 103.
West Indies began the final day needing to erase their deficit of 22 and then set India a competitive target. However, Unadkat struck first thing in the morning when he trapped David Bernard lbw. Kirk Edwards and Imran Khan took West Indies to a lead before Iqbal Abdulla dismissed Edwards, and Andre Russell shortly after. Imran and Gavin Tonge offered some resistance with a stand of 80 for the ninth wicket to delay India's march. Unadkat trapped Imran lbw for 62 before bowling Tonge for 46. He finished with 6 for 62 and in the end India were chasing a modest 111 to win.
The Indian openers, Shikhar Dhawan and Abhinav Mukund, made steady progress before they departed in the tenth over. They lost two more wickets, to Lionel Baker, but were never in danger of choking. Ajinkya Rahane steered them home with an unbeaten 33.
India A 291 (Abhinav 54, Rahane 69, Saha 50, Russell 5-68) and 114 for 4 (Rahane 33*) beat West Indies A 144 (Unadkat 7-41) and 257 (Imran 62, Unadkat 6-62) by six wickets
Trinidad and Tobago PM calls for unity in WI cricket
Cricinfo staff
Kamla Persad-Bissessar, the Prime Minister of Trinidad and Tobago, has asked the West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) and the West Indies Players' Association (WIPA) to end their ongoing feud for the betterment of cricket in the region. She also called for the implementation of the PJ Patterson report, which, authored by the former Jamaican Prime Minister, had recommended changes to the governance of West Indies cricket.
"I am calling on the West Indies Players' Association (WIPA) and the West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) to improve their relationship in order to return cricket to its glory days. Both parties must have mutual trust, respect and full disclosure in order to achieve better relations," Persad-Bissessar said in Port of Spain. "Blame is the comfort of the weak. Change is the name of a warrior, so we must be willing to make that change that would make a difference and not keep blaming each other."
WICB launches Twenty20 tournament
Caribbeancricket.com
The West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) on Thursday announced the details for the inaugural Caribbean T20 Tournament which will be played from July 22 to 31. The tournament, which will form part of the annual WICB calendar, will have the first phase played in Barbados (July 22 to 25) with the second phase in Trinidad (July 28 to 31).
Eight teams will be involved in the Caribbean T20. The West Indies territorial teams: Barbados, Combined Campuses and Colleges, Guyana, Jamaica, Leeward Islands, Trinidad and Tobago and Windward Islands will be joined by an international team. There is a huge incentive to win the Caribbean T20, with the leading regional team going on to represent the West Indies at the Airtel Champions League in South Africa in September.
The WICB also unveiled the lively, colourful, Caribbean T20 tournament logo and the tournament banner – which urges fans to “Bring It Back” and come out, wave their flags, play their music, and create a carnival atmosphere at the matches to celebrate what promises to be a 10 days of action-packed cricket in the Caribbean. This follows the theme “Bring It” which was used during the successful hosting of the ICC World T20 Tournament in the West Indies in April and May.
The format for the Caribbean T20 Tournament will be two groups of four teams. There will be a round robin stage in each group – each team will play three matches – with the top two teams in each group qualifying for the semi-finals. The winners of the semi-finals will advance to final while the losing semi-finalists will play a third-place play-off. The eight matches in Barbados will be played on July 22 to 25 and the eight matches in Trinidad will be played on July 28 to 31, with August 1 as the reserve day for the finals.
Matches will be played at 4 pm and 8 pm Eastern Caribbean Time/3 pm and 7 pm Jamaica Time; except on Sunday, July 25 when the start times will be 2 pm and 6 pm Eastern Caribbean Time/1 pm and 5 pm Jamaica Time.

Leeward Masters’ tournament ends in a fiasco
The Leeward Islands Masters’ tournament held in Antigua this year, ended in mass confusion and controversy at the Sir Vivian Richards stadium last evening. Last year’s champions, Nevis would consider themselves unlucky as they had an eventful stay in the host country: When they arrived in Antigua on the evening of Thursday 10th June, they were forced to wait at the VC Bird Airport for over two and a half hours before they were eventually picked up by bus to be taken to their hotel. The shocking reason given by the organizers was that they were not aware that the team was coming. It was explained that correspondences via e-mail were sent to Lewis Newton who is presently in the USA and Joe Claxton who is in Nevis seeking confirmation of Nevis’ participation to defend their trophy and that no reponse in the affirmative was received.
The Nevis team was then treated to the tail end of the reception welcoming ceremony, before being taken back to their hotel. Word was received that Nevis would play Anguilla at the John Hughes ground at 9am the following morning-Friday. The Nevis team was ready and waiting for a bus from 7.45 that morning. After numerous phone calls to some of the organizers and other persons, they were eventually picked up at about 1pm.
When they arrived at the grounds, it was discovered that they were not going to play Anguilla as yet as the St.Kitts team which was already there, set to play the Anguilla team at 2pm. St.Kitts engaged Anguilla and lost that contest, with the Nevis team getting front row seats for the match.
Nevis was then rescheduled to play two matches on Saturday 12th June—Anguilla in the first match and St.Kitts in the next. Anguilla won the toss and sent Nevis in to bat on a soft pitch which created major problems for the Nevisian batsmen and at one time they were less than 10 runs for 4 wickets. They eventually managed 81 from their 20 overs and Anguilla struggled right down to all of 18.2 overs to secure the victory aided by no fewer than 4 dropped catches by their opponents.
Nevis then had to win over St.Kitts in order to secure a semi final berth and they did this in convincing style. St.Kitts got to 82 for 9 from their 20 overs and Nevis got to 84 for 3 with Tony Grant leading the way with 39.
Meanwhile, despite showing up late for their encounter with St.Croix, home team Antigua was not only allowed to play but defeated the USVI team in a tense game which came down to the last ball.
St. Maarten then defeated St.Croix in a high scoring contest which came down to the second ball of the final over.
In a very exciting final game played on Saturday night, St.Maarten defeated Antigua in a tense contest which would have been even closer, had not it been for a Terry James cameo towards the end of the game.
It meant therefore that the semi finals were set for Sunday 13th June with Nevis scheduled to play St.Maarten at the John Hughes ground at 9am and Antigua slated to play Anguilla at the Sir Vivian Richards stadium at 9am.
When the Nevis and Anguilla teams arrived at John Hughes on Sunday morning they discovered that the pitch was totally soaked as rain had fallen and the pitch had not been covered. Both teams then headed to the Sir Vivian Richards stadium. When the teams arrived there, only the Anguilla team was present for the 9 am engagement versus Antigua and the pitch was in perfect condition as this particular pitch had been covered overnight. The officials from all of the teams concerned were then called to a meeting to discuss a proposal that both semi final matches and the finals be played at the said venue being fully aware that the venue is also well lit. At the end of the meeting, an announcement was made by President of the Leeward Islands Masters Association, Mr. Alkins Rogers that sent the St.Maarten and Anguilla teams into spontaneous applause. He indicated that the ruling was that the match between Nevis and Anguilla was ruled as an abandoned match with each team getting one point.
Further, Antigua had been disqualified for showing up late and the two teams with the most points in Anguilla and St.Maarten would play the finals.
This announcement led to general mayhem at the grounds as the Nevis and Antigua teams immediately showed their displeasure and disagreement with the ruling.
A stalemate situation ensued from 9.30am until sometime after 1 pm with various meetings and mixed messages being sent around the grounds. At one point one of the grounds men apparently under instructions, removed the stumps and it was revealed that a top Antiguan official had indicated that the stumps would be removed and the final game would not be played at the grounds.
During the opening ceremony, one of the organizers had referred to the payment of the registration fee by the teams with the slogan: “No pay no play”. However, during the impasse it was revealed that the St.Maarten team had paid the required fee that same morning. The logical question is: Why was that team not disqualified?
The Antiguans also brought another issue to the fore. They indicated that the announcement made earlier was premature and out of order as the grounds men had not officially handed over the grounds to the umpires and that it was the duty of the umpires to formally indicate to the officials that the Antiguans were unable to field a team before the team was disqualified. Minister of Tourism in Antiguan and a player himself, Mr. John McGinley, referred to the decision by the officials as ‘stupidness’. He stated that there were enough Antigua team members in the grounds had the umpires called play. “I was relaxing in my vehicle’, he insisted.
Eventually, good sense prevailed and the match between the Anguilla and the St.Maarten teams was eventually played and officially declared the finals. Anguilla won the finals by three wickets and was finally decalred the 2010 champions.
A few positives coming out of the tournament included the fact that Patrick Newton travelling as the Nevis representative umpire, officiated in several games involving the other teams and was highly commended by some of the players. It was also obvious that the officials made some errors but Lawson Ferguson stood out in his efforts to ensure that the matches were all played. One of the talking points of the tournament was the duel between Vaughn ‘Hungry’ Walsh of Antigua and ‘Dango’ Farrell of St.Kitts. On Saturday when the two teams met, reports indicate that Walsh was literally ‘flying’.
However, in one over to Farrell, he bounced and was majestically hooked over backward square for six. The very next delivery, he dug the ball short again, and Farrell swivelled and played an even better hook shot up on the grassy bank. In a post match interview, Walsh conceded: “Those were two of the best shots ever played off my bowling’.
Prescott, the 64 year old captain of the St.Maarten team played an exquisite cut shot off Vaughn Walsh for four that is still being talked about and Kelly who originates from Bath Village who is also in his sixties, fielded like a teen ager in the crucial match for his St.Maarten team versus Antigua.
The question now is: What does the future hold for the tournament—can the organizers get their act together and attract the participating beams to next year’s event slated for St.Croix? Only time will tell.
Summary of matches played:
*Nevis 81 all out: Eustace Johnson 19 not out; Wendell Wallace 18; Elroy David 13; Charles Morton 10.
For Anguilla—Proctor 3 for 9; Hodge 1 for 4; Carty 1 for 13 and Rogers 1 for 4

TRIATHALON
Sasha Takes A First At SXM Triathlon
It was quite the family affair as 16yr old Sasha Lloyd competed in her first Sprint Distance Triathlon alongside he dad Matt, at the annual Boardwalk Triathlon in Phillipsburg St Marten. Organised by Trisports Cycle Shop, and co-sponsored by Taloula Mangos Restaurant and Diamonds International, this event is one of the most fun oriented events in the region, many people trying out the sport for the first time, or linking up with others to enter as a relay team.
Sasha’s only previous triathlon experience had been during the Nevis Triathlon where she had competed twice in the shorter Try-A-Tri category, however, since then she has been developing her swim bike and run talents under the guidance of 4 time OECS triathlon Champion Reggie Douglas, which stood her in good stead as she raced abroad for the first time.
Both Sasha and her dad put on sterling performances in the event with Sasha knocking almost 3 mins off her previous best time for a 750 mtr swim, followed by a fierce bike leg where she posted the 11th fastest bike split of the 39 athletes involved in the Sprint, a wonderful achievement. Sasha completed the whole course in a very credible time of 1:37:27. This put Sasha in 1st for her age group and 5th overall in the womens category, fantastic!!, Matt meanwhile was also having a great race, just missing out on the podium in 4th place in his age group, finishing 15th overall in a time of 1:25:25.
Matt Lloyd, who is the current President of the Nevis Cycle & Triathlon Club commented “It was an incredibly proud moment for me to watch my daughter Sasha come in with the Nevis flag held out for the TV and news cameras, the youngest competitor and winner of the junior age group. Well Done Sasha”
Sasha, very excited after her race said “My first ever experience in a triathlon was great! the St Marten Boardwalk triathlon 2010 was the first ever sprint of that distance I ever did and I thank Winston for giving me that opportunity and believing that I can finish it. I would also like to thank Reggie for training me and everyone who supported me”
SKN Triathlon Federation President had this to say “ It was wonderful to see Sasha perform so well, she is the eldest of our young triathletes and the first to compete away at this distance, she represented her country and club in fine style, congratulations Sasha”
For the full results see the results page on the website www.neviscycleclub.com , the next event on the calendar will be the SKN National Cycling Championships 19th/20th June, the 21km individual Time Trial will be hosted in St Kitts on the 19th, and the 60km Road Race will be held on Nevis on the 20th, for further information contact Greg Phillip 662 3975
