Gunmen Invade Jamaican Official’s Home

Karl Samuda

July 1 -- As reported by The Jamaica Observer, gunmen held up workers yesterday at the Knollis, St Catherine home of Cabinet Minister Karl Samuda, locking them in a room before getting away with Samuda’s shotgun and an estimated 100 rounds of ammunition. The incident took place at about 12:00 noon.

The men also stole an undisclosed amount of U.S. currency after cutting open a steel safe with a blowtorch, according to the police.

Samuda, who is general secretary of the ruling Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) and MP for North Central St Andrew, was not home at the time of the robbery. Police investigations are ongoing.

The fact that the incident took place less than 24 hours after Samuda has rejected offers of help from local dons in the upcoming election was not mentioned as a possible motive.
