Nevisians can begin to count their blessings: the marvelous Four Seasons Resort will re-open its doors on Dec. 15, just 10 days before Christmas.
That is the latest word from a spokesman for the international resort which was forced to shut down due to damage from Hurricane Omar that devastated wide sections of the Eastern Caribbean in October 2008.
Ironically, that was the same month America and the world shuddered from the impact of a banking collapse and economic slowdown that affected tourism worldwide.
While Nevis and St. Kitts have so far escaped the wrath of any more hurricanes, the economic problems remain and the absence of tourists has been felt throughout the eastern Caribbean. However, Andrew Humphries, Regional Vice President and General Manager of the Four Seasons Resort in Nevis, is optimistic about the coming tourist season.
In a press release issued recently, Humphries said, 'We look forward to welcoming guests back to Four Seasons Resort Nevis and the tranquil and beautiful island of Nevis.
'We wish to thank the community and our staff for their patience during this challenging period for the resort and the island,' he added.
Tara MacIntyre, director of public relations for the resort, contacted the Observer from her New York office. She thanked the Observer for its 'passion and enthusiasm for Nevis,' and said reconstruction work has been ongoing for sometime at the resort. She also noted that the golf course and villa community have remained open while the repairs are being made.
Ms. MacIntyre said, 'We are gearing up for a Dec. 15 opening and do not anticipate any delays at this point.'
Reconstruction of the beautiful beach area is currently underway. She said, 'To ensure the most efficient progress with this project, we will shortly make an announcement to the community requesting to protect this area from access. It will be something like, 'Please pardon our progress and we apologize for any temporary inconvenience,' she added.
Ms. MacIntyre said resort officials are also pleased to have turtle nesting on Pinney's Beach.
'As always, we are working in partnership with Lemuel Pemberton, director of Nevis Fisheries, to ensure the marking and conservation of nests to ensure the future of one of Nevis' most precious natural wonders -- the sea turtles,' she declared.
'They are among Nevis' most faithful visitors.'
As for how many employees will be hired to staff the resort, she could not commit the Four Seasons, saying, 'The recruitment process is just commencing.'
She gave thanks to the island government for 'being a supporter throughout our closure process,' and said the resort management is 'grateful for their ongoing commitment to tourism and sustainability to the island.' Since its opening, the Four Seasons has been the largest single employer of local residents on the island.
Sea turtles have been an important part of the Nevis culture and the Four Seasons has made a commitment to supporting the preservation of the creatures and their permanent place on the island.
The 196-room Four Seasons Resort markets itself as an 'intimate retreat' known for its romantic settings, unspoiled environment and rich history and culture.'
Its offerings to upscale visitors drawn from many parts of the world include exotic cuisine, top-rated golf, spa, tennis, swimming pools, children's facilities and approximately 40 villas and estate homes for rental and abundant water sports and nature excursions.
