Nevis under 13’s beat Barbados Visitors
The Nevis under 13 cricket team achieved a comprehensive victory over a visiting under 13 team out of St.Phillip’s in Barbados.
The match was played at Grove Park on Wednesday 14th July in front of a fair sized crowd.
The Nevis under 13’s batted first and led by good knocks by Ross Powell 23; Delroy Cornelius 25 and MVP for the recently concluded TDC sponsored Primary School competition, Philo Wallace also scored 25. Nevis got to a challenging 152 for 6 in 25 overs.
The most forceful knock came from Delroy Cornelius however. The powerfully built left hander struck three mighty sixes, one of which landed flush on the back seat of a jeep belonging to the Ministry of Sports, after breaking clean through the back glass. The vehicle had been parked in front the of the pavilion.
For the visitors, Shaquil Knight was the main bowler with 3 for 29.
The Barbados team then got off to a solid start even though the openers were obviously discomforted by the rapid pace and bounce of young Ravi. However, it was Kezron Archibald in his second spell from the pavilion end who wreaked total havoc for the visitors.
His accuracy, pace and bounce was just too much on the day and when it was all over, the visitors had crumbled too 102 all out in 18.4 overs. Kezron Archibald 5 for 25.
The top scorer was the impressive Shaquil Knight with 24.

CYCLING
45km Road Bike Race July 10th
The TNCTC road bikers continued there preparations for their upcoming challenge in Anguilla where they will contest the annual John T memorial road race.
The course was set between Cotton Ground and the Cultural Centre with the athletes required to do laps according to their category, for the Elite seniors and Juniors 5 laps, Juniors and masters 4 laps, Novices and Cadets 3 laps.
With the police on hand to offer traffic control the 15 racers set off en masse towards town, the first lap was fairly even with almost the whole group staying together, however, once they made the turn from the first lap the pressure was on with James and Reggie setting the pace. Assim Chapman, Trifon Simmons and Sasha Lloyd were the elite juniors racing on this day and they more than held there own against the older guys, special mention to an ever improving Matt Lloyd who is clearly demonstrating 6that age is just a number.
Sasha was the first Junior to drop off the increasingly hot pace, as the diminishing group raced up the hill towards St Thomas School, slowly being distanced as well were Greg Phillip and Alex Isles, Matt was gamely hanging in there. On the penultimate lap the big guns turned up the heat, and despite a very valiant chasing partnership of Assim and Trifon, Reggie and James escaped to challenge for the win on their own, strangely the two veterans had lost track of their laps and thinking they had one more lap to fight they crossed the finish line together, closely followed by Assim and Trifon. I guess that’s a draw then.
Meanwhile the novices, cadets and masters were having their own dramas, Jaime Holmes hit a pothole which punctured both of his wheels and ended his race right there, J’june, Cory and Sharizelle were fighting a running battle for most of their 3 lap race, with J’june finally besting them on the St Thomas hill to win the day, but huge congrats to the others for a very competitive ride. Alas, with Jaime out of the mix Gordon Avery just had to finish to claim the win, but in his usual hard charging fashion he took on the juniors, beat them and then carried on to do an extra lap, Go Doc Go!!!
It was a lovely day with a very good course that all the riders enjoyed; we wish to thank the police for their great work and the motoring public for their much appreciated cooperation, and our fabulous timing team Collette and Marecia.
Now that the summer is here the Cycling and Triathlon federations are joining forces with the TNCTC to provide summer training sessions for any youths interested in learning to swim bike and run, for further details contact Matt Lloyd 667 7776 or Greg Phillip 662 3975, for other event details see the website www.neviscycleclub.com

Winning team receives royal toast
The victorious Nevis team—the inaugural winners of the Leeward Islands T-20 tournament was toasted to a celebration fit for kings when the Premier of Nevis hosted a cocktail reception in their honour.
The event took place last evening at the enchanting Pinneys Beach Hotel. Even though the Premier himself and other members of his cabinet had other prior engagements, they were present in significant numbers. The gathering included members of cabinet, Advisors to the Government, senior government officials, members of the Nevis Cricket Association and a host of cricket enthusiasts.
The event was ably chaired by Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Sports, Mr. Alsted Pemberton and commenced with an invocation delivered by Mr. Llewellyn Parris.
During his opening remarks, Mr. Pemberton asked for a standing ovation for the winning team and got a spontaneous response. He also congratulated the entire make up of the Nevis Cricket Association, including the selectors, umpires and groundsmen for their hard work. He was also quick to mention the significant support work being given by the Ministry of Sports and noted that the Manager, Coach and Trainer of the Nevis team, all worked within the Ministry of Sports.
President of the Nevis Cricket Association Mr. Ronald Powell noted that he Nevis team always had talent but indicated that his Association very quickly noted that there was a disciplinary problem and put measures in place to arrest the problem. This included the established code of conduct and a disciplinary committee that has functioned well. He further stated that the Association also endeavoured to stay close to the team. He was quick to point out also that the last win by a Nevis team was quite some time back under his captaincy and indicated that he got very good directives from the Hon Carlyse Powell who had a successful stint as President of the Nevis Crciket Association and publicly thanked him for his guidance.
Minister of Sports, Hon Hensley Daniel was quick to link the significance of the victory to the fact that the NRP led administration is at the same time celebrating four years in government.
He indicated that his government regards sports as a very critical part of the development of the country. He reiterated his considered opinion that Nevis has the most test cricketers per square mile, anywhere in the world. He however expressed disappointment in the fact that he still does not see the cricketers doing as much running and general training as is necessary for persons who want to make it to the top and asked Trainer Masefield Nisbett to ensure that this area is improved.
He also hinted to the cricketers that just as Grove Park will be renamed in honour of Elquemedo Willet, so too, once they excel, they too will be honoured in due course.
Captain of the team, Tonito Willet played one of hi best T-20 innings ever His speech was short and to the point and he was eloquent in his delivery as he expressed thanks to God, to the Association and to all who had helped to make the victory possible.
“I am very much honoured to be a part of this very talented and properly gelled team….we just felt the energy from all players, Manager, Coach and Trainer that this team was hungry for victory and a team that believed that championship was possible…….and I would also bravely say that this is the beginning of more championships”. He received rapturous applause.
Premier Joseph Parry spoke passionately as he first of all expressed disappointment that the present day cricketers were not versed on their cricketing history—especially their local cricketing history. He explained that in speaking to one of the players, there was noted surprise when he expressed that he had served as President and in other capacities for the local crciket Association and even at the West Indies board level. He urged that this be rectified with urgency, as the cricketers need to know their history and made a special appeal to President Ronald Powell to make sure that this was done.
He also lauded the contributions of the cricketers who have made it to the top from Nevis and applauded the work they would have done as ambassadors in selling and promoting the country. He told the cricketers that Willet will receive his honour first but that all of the other cricketers who have made it to the West Indies team would also receive their reward in due course.
He told the cricketers that talent alone won’t do it. It has to be nurtured. He expressed that discipline and sacrifice were necessary in order to make it to the top. He congratulated the cricketers for a really great victory and implored them to continue in their winning ways.
The cricketers later posed for a photo shoot with the imposing trophy, prior to disposing of the variety of delicacies on hand.

Runako included in Leewards Squad
Talented West Indies middle order batsman, Runako Morton has been included in the Leeward islands senior cricket team that will engage in the first ever West Indies T-20 tournament.
When the team was originally released, the Nevisian right hander’s name was noticeably absent.
In a telephone interview yesterday, Morton who is currently training a his home base in Trinidad explained that initially he had sent a letter to the Leeward Islands crciket board requesting leave from the Leeward Islands tournament due to the fact that his wife was expecting a baby and he wanted to be there for her and his two other children during the critical time. He however noted that an error in the letter was almost costly to him.
Instead of writing that he would be unavailable for the Leeward Islands tournament as he intended, the letter stated that he was unavailable for the Leeward Islands team—a significant difference. He however was able to explain the error to President of the Leeward Islands cricket President Mr. Gregory Shillingford and apologized for the error.
Morton indicated that all he wants to do ‘is just play cricket’. He stated that he was practising really hard and was scoring heavily for his local club in Trinidad-- Queens Park. He remains committed to the Leeward’s team and intends to score heavily in the upcoming series.

Highlights Int Storms into finals
Last year, Highlights Int dominated the preliminary rounds of the female cricket league but faltered in the semi finals to be totally knocked out. Last evening they ensured that they did not make a similar mistake.
In their semi final encounter versus Brown Hill Captain Ruby Chapman won the toss and elected to bat first. They were off to a shaky start with the early loss of Curleanne Parris and with an especially subdued Ruby Chapman due to some tight bowling and fielding of the Bronx team. However, Latoya Bussue broke loose with some scintillating shots before she perished on 29. Ruby Chapman also stepped it up a gear towards the end of the innings, hitting two thumping sixes from consecutive deliveries from one over.
Highlights eventually getting to 93 for 3. There was one major sad incident which took some of the spark out of the match, when top batter for the Brown Hill team, V. Hanley, in attempting a stop a ball, fell awkwardly and apparently damaged a knee and had to be taken to the hospital.
The Brown Hill team was off to a bad start when they lost the early wicket of one of their main batters Claudia Saddler bowled behind her back by Malva Rawlins. Thereafter they struggled miserably—at one point being 19 for 5. The crowd eventually realized that it was a foregone conclusion. Brown Hill eventually 33 for 9—effectively all out with Hanley unable to bat. Malva Rawlins in a superb spell bagged 4 for 12 and is now the leading wicket taker with 13 wickets.
The best of three finals will commence tomorrow Thursday with the bottom four clash between St.James’ and Super rockers at 6.30 pm and the top four clash between Highlights and Empire immediately after. There will be no matches on the weekend as the Highlights team had previously written of their unavailability due to their fund raising boat ride. The action will continue on Tuesday 20th July and if needs be, the tournament will culminate on Thursday 22nd July.
An all star team will be selected shortly to represent Nevis in a 10/10 encounter versus St.Kitts females on Wednesday 28th July, as part of the renaming ceremony of Grove Park in honour of Elquemedo Willet.

“The Bank of Nevis remains committed to programs that will enhance the development of the Youth of Nevis”. This was reiterated yesterday by Manager of the Bank, Mr. Everette Martin as he delivered an address at the opening ceremony of the Bank of Nevis Cricket Coaching Clinic. This makes the third consecutive year that the Bank is sponsoring the program. However, Mr. Martin expressed willingness to expand the sponsorship funds by suggesting to Minister of Sports, Hon Hensley Daniel that a program which involved not just Cricket but as many of the other sports played on the island could be put in place. He however was high in praise for chief coordinator of the program, Mr. Carl Tuckett and indicated the willingness of his institution to continue such worthwhile sponsorship.
The ceremony commenced with prayer by Mr. Oliver Beazer, Coach at the Gingerland Secondary School. This was followed by a lovely rendition of the national anthem on pan, by Mr. Basil Manners. The program was chaired by Mr. Eric Evelyn who urged the young cricketers present to learn as much as they could so that one day they could follow in the steps of the other great achievers in the sport from Nevis.
Minister of Sports, Hon Hensley Daniel was happy to note that his government remains committed to such programs and referred to the fact that the majority of his cabinet colleagues were also former crciket Administrators on the island. He also reminded the gathering that Grove Park will be renamed in honour of Elquemedo Willet on July 28th and encouraged the young cricketers to aspire to such achievements.
The featured address was delivered by Mr. Ronald Powell, President of the Nevis Crciket Association. He asked the youngsters to be disciplined and to have respect. Victorious Nevis team returns
A tired but happy Nevis senior cricket team returned from Antigua late last evening after completing a historic win in Antigua, in the inaugural Leeward Islands T-20. Due to less than favourable flight arrangements, the players landed at the RLB Bradshaw airport shortly before 8pm last evening and then arrived at the Oualie Beach Hotel sometime after 10 pm compliments of a private boat, chartered by the Nevis Cricket Association.
The victorious cricketers were met by members of the Nevis Cricketer Association and some of their loved ones. Those present included President Ronald Powell, Vice President Cartwright Farrell and member of management, Kelvin Archibald.
President Powell commended the cricketers for their historic win and expressed that it was a long time that a Nevis senior team had not savoured the sweetness of victory. He also implored them to now make winning a habit and felt that with the present crop of cricketers, that Nevis should maintain the number one spot for at least the next five years. Some of the cricketers however, chanted ‘ten years—fifteen years’.
Winning Manager, Malcolm Ramsey expressed his joy at being part of a winning unit. He indicated that even though at one point it appeared that Antigua would win, his team remained focused and committed to winning the final game versus St.Kitts. “Of course we were happy when we learnt that Montserrat had bowled out Antigua for jus 80’, he added. He was high in praise for the overall team effort of the unit.
Coach Deryck Parry also praised the commitment of the team. “Our only problem was the batting, in not being consistent but the bowling and fielding were superb’, he stated. He was also high in praise for the batting of tournament MVP, Javia Liburd who he referred to as ‘special’.
Javia Liburd for his part mentioned that even though he was carrying an injury, he decided that he had to do the job for his team and that he did.
Trainer Masefield Nisbett was quick to note that the team would be back in full training from Thursday 15th July as they still have a lot of cricket upcoming.
President Ronald Powell also informed the team that they will be treated to a cocktail reception this evening at 5pm at the Pinneys Beach Hotel, compliments of the Premier of Nevis, Hon Joseph Parry.
Manager Malcolm Ramsey also revealed that Nevis had received two selectees to the Leeward Islands team for the upcoming West Indies T-20 tournament. They are Javia Liburd and Tonito Willet.

Barbados Youth team visits
Coach of the visiting Barbados under 13 cricket team, Trevor Alleyne expressed pleasure at being so warmly welcomed to Nevis yesterday, as he and his young charges sat in at the impressive opening ceremony of the Bank of Nevis cricket coaching clinic held at the Grell Hull/Stevens Netball complex yesterday.
The youthful team out of St.Phillip’s in Barbados journeyed to Nevis yesterday with the main intention of playing a match versus a Nevis under 13 team. However due to persistent rain, that match had to be cancelled. They would however return to Nevis on tomorrow Wednesday 14th July and once there is fair weather, the match will be played at the Ramsbury grounds.
Alleyne indicated that his team is in a habit of touring on an annual basis and would have journeyed to as far as the UK in previous seasons but decided to travel to the Federation this time around.
So far they have played four matches over in St.Kitts. Two were rained out but they have won the other two.
When asked whether or not most of the players would be involved in the St.Kitts-Nevis regional under 13 tournament coming up in August, Alleyne indicated that although the youngsters in his team were good, there were even better cricketers in Barbados who may be picked to represent the island team for the upcoming tournament.

Usain Bolt snubs London meeting over tax laws
Triple Olympic champion Usain Bolt has announced he will not compete at August's Aviva London Grand Prix because of Britain's tax laws.
The 100m and 200m world record holder may not now compete in the UK again until the 2012 Olympics.
New regulations mean the 23-year-old Jamaican could lose more money than he would earn from competing at the Crystal Palace Diamond League event.
"I am definitely not going to run [in London]," Bolt told a news conference.
Crystal Palace organizers had hoped to stage a three-way showdown between Bolt and his sprint rivals Asafa Powell and Tyson Gay.
Athletes competing in the UK are liable for a 50% tax rate on their appearance fee as well as a proportion of their total worldwide earnings - which for Bolt, who earns millions from endorsements, could be hugely costly.
HM Revenue & Customs won a case in 2006 brought by tennis star Andre Agassi. It successfully argued that as well as the prize money he accrued, a proportion of Agassi's worldwide sponsorship income was also earned during his time in the UK and was therefore taxable.
HMRC bases its tax charge on the number of UK events athletes compete in. For example, if Bolt were to take part in 10 meetings worldwide, with one in the UK, the HMRC could tax him on one-10th of his worldwide earnings.
The UK's tax laws have proved a handicap to the country's chances of hosting events. Uefa admitted in 2008 that Wembley missed out on the 2010 Champions League final for that very reason.
The Government has since agreed to waive the rule so London can host the 2011 final, and competitors in the 2012 Olympics are also exempt.
Golfer Sergio Garcia has admitted in the past that he limits his appearances in the UK because of tax laws.

CRICKET
NEVIS SECURES HISTORIC WIN
It has been long in coming because since the success of the early nineties and prior to that, Nevis has failed to secure a Leeward Islands championship trophy in the game of cricket. However, all of that changed on the evening of Sunday 11th July at the prestigious Sir Vivian Richards stadium when the Nevis team convincingly defeated their arch rivals and immediate neighbours, St.Kitts.
The action was staged in the inaugural 20/20 Leeward Islands Crciket series with all of the mathches staged in Antigua.
When former West Indies cricketer, Kenny Benjamin gave a live update of the tournament on Choice Radio’s Heart Search program on Sunday morning, he indicated that Antigua was out front on 12 points, having beaten St.Kitts, Nevis and Anguilla.
Nevis was in joint second with St.Kitts on 8 points, having beaten Anguilla and Montserrat. The only way any of the second placed teams could challenge Antigua was if the Montserrat team created the upset of the tournament by defeating Antigua. A prospect that was so unlikely that Benjamin chuckled as he spoke.
When Montserrat met Antigua at 3.30 pm that afternoon, it seemed like a predictable foregone conclusion with Antigua off to a rapid start, getting up to 32 without loss. However, some rash shots bordering on cockiness set the stage for their demise. One such shot saw Mali Richards charging recklessly down the track to be superbly stumped by wicketkeeper Lane. Thereafter, the wheels fell off for the Antigua team and they were shockingly bowled out for 81. The Nevis team could not believe their good fortune—they now had a chance to challenge Antigua for the trophy—but hold your breaths-- Montserrat had to make the runs first! If the cricketers and spectators had no heart problems prior to the Montserrat response, they must have had a few stutters as the Montserrat team struggled painfully throughout, finally getting the victory runs off the penultimate delivery of the final over—for the loss of 9 wickets.
Nevis then engaged St.Kitts with renewed spirit and chalked up an impressive 146 in their 20 overs. They however needed to restrict St.Kitts to below 132 runs in order to gain a superior run rate over Antigua. St.Kitts was restricted to 126 and the Nevisians let out all the built up tensions as they celebrated to a man. It meant therefore that Manager Malcolm Ramsey would have worked the magic ingredient to secure victory on his first outing with the team.
Here are some results of other matches played in the tournament:
St Kitts beat Anguilla by 108 runs: St Kitts 169-2 off 20 overs (Shane Jeffers 100, Codville Rodgers 36 not out). Anguilla 61-9 off 20 overs (Novall McCall 4-12, Elvin Berridge 2-18)
Antigua and Barbuda beat Nevis by 10 runs on the Duckworth/Lewis method: Antigua and Barbuda 138-6 off 20 overs (Juari Edwards 24, Gavin Williams 23, Justin Athanaze 20 not out; Tonito Willett 2-23). Nevis 114-7 off 17 overs (Javia Liburd 53, Chad Hampson 2-33, Larry Joseph 2-16)

Tonito Willet –man of the match versus St.Kitts and Javia Liburd was adjudged the Player of the series for his superlative innings throughout.
It is understood that the Leeward Island steam has already been selected and will be announced sometime today.
The Leeward Islands players are using the Tournament as warm-up for the West Indies Cricket Board's Caribbean T20 Tournament to be played in Barbados and Trinidad and Tobago from July 22 to 31. The Leewards will compete in Zone A alongside Jamaica, Trinidad and Tobago and Canada.
They take on Jamaica on July 22 at 8 pm at Kensington Oval in Barbados and return to the same venue two days later to meet Trinidad and Tobago at 8 pm. Their final preliminary match will be against Canada at Queen's Park Oval in Trinidad on July 28 at 4 pm.
The news of the Nevis win was received joyfully by members of the Nevis Crciket Association late last night. Kelly Archibald was ecstatic:’ It’s a long time we aint win anything” he exclaimed. President Ronald Powell indicated that he felt the team had the winning combination and was happy that they finally put everything together. He indicated that arrangements are being made to officially meet the players on their return to Nevis later today.

Hanley. Walters, Liburd and Dore all got 1 wicket each. In the only game played on Sunday 11th. St.James’ was inserted by the brave Nurses and amassed the highest score for the season—a whopping 148 for 4 in 12 overs. Judy Morton creamed the bowling to all parts of the Park for 48; Giselle Skeete appeared in a hurry to catch a plane to New York as she struck 41 runs in short order. No fewer than 30 coming from one over from a hapless Jackie Glasford—3 sixes and 3 fours! Angel Leader scored 21. Joslyn Hendrickson got 2 for 18; Cressy Mills 1 for 25 and Carla Hendrickson 1 for 16.

Banks willing to follow in Dad’s footsteps
HOLLYWOOD, Florida – West Indian cricketer Omari Banks, who is in the middle of preparations for the regional Twenty20 cricket tournament, is this weekend making a cameo on the regional entertainment television show ‘Caribbean Soundtrack.’
Banks is better known around the world as an off-spinning all-rounder who has played cricket for the West Indies, the Leeward Islands and English county Somerset.
But secondary to cricket, Banks is an aspiring musician who says he hopes one day to follow in his father’s footsteps and make music commercially.
Banks is the son of Anguilla’s most internationally acclaimed singer Bankie Banks, who is just getting ready for a North America tour this summer.
In a special segment of this week’s Caribbean Soundtrack, Banks speaks about his music tastes, about his cricket and plays his acoustic guitar while doing covers of his father and Beres Hammond.
While it’s an entertainment/music show, the talk quickly turned to cricket once Omari came on.
“I have been following the (recent) series (against South Africa) quite closely, and we know the team has not been doing too well,” he said on his dreams of getting back to the team.
“I am looking forward to have a good Twenty20 competition with the World Cup coming up (next year), and hopefully to get back into the team,” he said.
Caribbean Soundtrack is a weekly one-hour syndicate show featuring Caribbean entertainment that is carried by a mixture of local and regional television networks.
Caribbean Soundtrack is seen throughout the region on cable on Pan Caribbean Channels CARIBVISION (8 pm ECT Saturdays & 9:30 pm Sundays) and TEMPO (7 pm ECT Sundays & 10 am Mondays).
It is also seen on local channels in the British Virgin Islands, Grenada, St Lucia, St Vincent and the Grenadines and Trinidad & Tobago.
This week’s show is guest hosted by the Anguillan Vanessa Croft, a one-time Los Angeles based child actor who was featured in Michael Jackson’s ‘Black or White’ video.
Netball
Alpha honoured at Netball opening
Alpha Jeffers of Bath Village, Nevis who served in the capacity of Caretaker for the newly renamed ‘Grell Hull/ Stevens’ complex for 19 years, received some of her due flowers on the evening of Saturday 10th July. The occasion was the opening of a local Netball league after a break of about two years.
President of the Nevis Netball Association, Jeannette Grell Hull spoke warmly of the contributions of the outstanding Netball supporter and Hazeldine Lewis graciously presented her with a gift token and informed the crowd that due to the fact that Alpha is currently suffering from a stroke, a donation would be collected each afternoon and a purse will be presented to the dear lady at the end of the tournament.
Prior to that, the five competing teams graced the complex in a fine march past exhibition. The invocation was delivered by Pastor Salome James who asked God for a competitive but excellent league and further asked for the protection of the players.
President of the Nevis Netball Association, Jeannette Grell Hull, gave a historical perspective of the sport on Nevis and expressed her desire to get Netball back into the Primary schools. She then listed some of the immediate plan of her Association as follows:
· To establish a ‘scouting committee’ which will identify new talents
· To acquire the services of a national coach for Netball
· Provide transportation for ‘out of town’ athletes where necessary
· To ensure that Nevis has qualified umpires
Main sponsor of the tournament, National Bank was represented by Nevis Branch manager, Mrs. Shermaine Lewis. She expressed her Bank’s continued commitment to the development of the youth on Nevis with the added motivation to ensure that they stay positively occupied and not involved with the vices of society. She explained that this was one of the ways that the bank which has grown in stature within the region, can give back to the society that made it possible.
Premier of Nevis, Hon. Joseph Parry reminicesed on the days when Netball rivaled crciket on Nevis in terms of crowd support and general skill. He was high in praise for the efforts of the outstanding pioneers of the sport but especially saluted Ms Cicely Grell Hull and Mrs. Dora Stevens after whom the Netball complex has been renamed, for their outstanding contributions to the sport.
Minster of Sports, Hon. Hensley Daniel applauded National Bank for their generosity even during these times of financial restraint and asked the players to move from a stage of participation to a stage of competition.
He also made the bold commitment that Netball as a sport will be actively revived within the Primary Schools on Nevis, starting September of this year and further, that Netball competitions between the Primary schools will be initiated around Easter of 2011. He appealed to the past players to assist in making this a reality.
The Players oath was done by Ms Vera Herbert and the official’s oath, by carol Ward. The officials on hand which also included the Hon. Carlyse Powell then inspected the teams.
The feature for the evening was a series of knockout matches between the teams. The results are as follows:
Stoney Grove Untouchables 10 Bath United 3
St.Thomas United 12 Majestics 6
Bath United 19 Majestics 10 (in a losers’ clash)
Stoney Grove Untouchables 11 St.thomas’ 7 –in the grand finale
Stoney Grove untouchables therefore the knockout champions for 2010
The league matches got on the way on the evening of Sunday 11th with two games:
Bath United trounced St.thomas’ United two 51 to 7 and St.thomas’ one dished out a similar deft to Majestics with a score line of 47 to 13.

Top four determined in Female League
The members of the Brown Hill team and their entire bench swarmed onto the field at Grove Park as Captain Rosie Dunrod connected with the penultimate delivery to secure victory for her team.
In the tense encounter the Brown Hill team won the toss and elected to send the 2nd place Empire team in to bat first. The Empire batters never really came to terms with the bowling of the Brown Hill team, whose players incidentally looked sharper on the night.
Their batters were kept in check for the most part but eventually got some well needed runs towards the end of the innings.
They eventually got to 78 for 5 in 12 overs. Sherilyn Liburd and Catherine Joseph both top scored with 12 and There were all of 33 extras.
Kerisha Powell was the stand out bowler with 3 for 9; Rosie Dunrod 1 for 17 and Valerie Liburd 1 for 19.
Brown Hill in response looked determined to get the total and obviously played with a game plan. Rosie Dunrod and Claudia Saddler shared in a half century stand and even though they were not getting the boundaries, they ran some singles and twos that sometimes looked impossible but hey consistently beat the fielders to safety.
In the tense moment, with the crowd really enjoying what was obviously the best game of the league so far, it came down to 4 runs required off the final over. The Brown Hill supporters were screaming at the top of their lungs and when two balls were missed it eventually came down to two runs required from the last two deliveries. When Rosie Dunrod managed to get the penultimate ball away for the winning run, there was relief in the Brown Hill camp as they spilled onto the field of play. Brown Hill 79 for 1 in 11.5 overs. Rosie Dunrod batted through the innings to be 22 not out; Claudia Saddler 15 and Valerie Hanley 11 not out. Charmaine Walters got the lone wicket for 14 runs.
In the first match of the evening, St.James’ stayed in the hunt for a place in the top four by easily defeating Super Rockers by 36 runs.
St.James’ batted first and scored 96 for 6 from 12 overs: Junella Burke 27; Angel Leader 14 and Tressy Phillip 14. There were 26 extras. Chaliese Browne became the lead bowler in the preliminary rounds when she picked up 2 for 20; Olinda Elliot 1 for 15 and Jasmine Herbert 1 for 26.
Super Rockers always seemed ‘behind the eight ball’ and struggled to 60 for 7 from 12 overs: Olinda Elliot got 12 and Jasmine Joshua 9.
President Ronald Powell in his bid to ensure that the semi final encounters commence next weekend, ruled the previous game between the Alex Stars and St.James’ as a rained out game, thus leaving the last year champions short by one point behind Brown Hill in the bid for a top four spot.
The final points standings therefore are:
1st- Highlights Int 14 points
2nd—Empire 10 points
3rd St.Thomas’ 10 points
4th Brown Hill 8 points
5th St.James’ 7 points
6th Super Rockers 4 points
7th GT United 2 points
Alex Stars 1 point
The top and bottom four semi final matches will therefore commence this Saturday night—10th July with the first in the bottom four match ups as GT United takes on Super Rockers.
The second match will be the first in the top four match ups as Empire takes on St.Thomas’
Sunday 11th July –Match one in the bottom four semis—St.James’ engages Alex Stars
Match two in the top four—Highlights Int takes on Brown Hill
The best of three finals in the top and bottom draw will commence on Thursday 15th with the winners from this weekend’s encounters facing off for top honours. The matches are expected to climax next weekend with the closing ceremony and awards to the top performers.

Nevis goes 2 and 0
The Nevis senior cricket team continued their winning ways in the inaugural 20/20 series between the top teams in the Leewards. Following up on their convincing victory over Montserrat on the first night, Nevis also got the better of a determined Anguilla team last evening.
Nevis batted first and scored a competitive 133 for 5 from their 20 overs with man of the match of the previous evening, Javia Liburd again batting his way to the coveted award with 67 not out. Captain Tonito willet posted a well played 37. Omari Banks bagged 2 for 29 and Tyson 1 for 15.
Anguilla then managed 111 for 8 with Terry Adams getting 27 and Banks 20. Jason Campbell bowled well to get 3 for 27; Trevier Smithen 2 for 22; Aquito Willet 1 for 15 and Ian Byron bowled a superlative spell to have the enviable figures of 1 for 9 from 4 overs. Nevis winning by 22 runs.
In the first game of the day, St.Kitts comfortably took care of Montserrat. St.Kitts batted first and scored 144 in their 20 overs and restricted Montserrat to 120 from their 20.
This evening will see the much anticipated match up between Antigua and Barbuda and Nevis. The game is set to commence at 6.30 pm and will be brought live on ABS radio 90.50 FM.
Elizabeth Pemberton gets cause to rejoice
A small but vociferous crowd was on hand yesterday afternoon to witness the only match of the day in the TDC Primary school cricket league being played at Grove Park. The Ivor Walters Primary batted first versus the Elizabeth Pemberton Primary and could only manage 55 for 7 from 10 overs. Malcolm top scored with 9 and Taj Wharton got 7. R. Balgobin was the main destroyer with his right arm wrist spinners with 4 for 7 from 2 overs.

Lancashire wins despite Stoute eight-for
Cricinfo staff
West Indies A allrounder Kevin Stoute returned one of the best figures in List A history but it was Lancashire left-arm spinner Gary Kiddy’s three-wicket burst that proved pivotal at Old Trafford. Before Stoute started running through the batting, the Lancashire openers, Luke Procter and Karl Brown, had already pushed the home side towards a healthy total. However, on his return from injury Keedy's wickets came early in the innings and derailed the West Indian chase, setting up a comfortable victory.
After winning the toss, Procter and Brown put on a brisk 133 before legspinner Anthony Martin struck twice. Procter, 22, playing his second List A progressed towards a maiden century but was three runs short when he became Stoute's first victim. From 179 for 2, Stoute sliced through the innings to finish with 8 for 52, but couldn't prevent the home side from scoring at a run a ball in the final 15 overs.
The West Indian chase got off to a solid start before captain Omar Phillips was dismissed for 17. Then two young Caribbean batsmen hoping to cement international spots, Andre Fletcher and Darren Bravo, added 36 patient runs before Keedy, making his first appearance of the season after fracturing his collarbone, made a match-turning impact, removing both set batsmen and Kirk Edwards for the addition of 11 runs.
Procter's good day continued as he picked up Chadwick Walton's wicket which left the visitors at 86 for 5 after having been at 72 for 1. Imran Khan belted 11 fours in a 63-ball 74 but West Indies still finished well short.
Lancashire 271 (Procter 97, Brown 56, Stoute 8-52) beat West Indies A 218 (Khan 74, Keedy 3-34) by 53 runs

Bolt equals Powell’s time
BBC sports
Usain Bolt equalled the best time of the season in winning the 100m at the Diamond League event in Lausanne in 9.82 seconds on his return from injury.
The Olympic and world champion was due to run over 200m but an Achilles tendon problem forced him to switch to 100m.
The 23-year-old was making his first appearance since the World Challenge meet in Ostrava on 27 May, and finished ahead of fellow Jamaican Yohan Blake.
Asafa Powell has also clocked 9.82 seconds this year, in Rome on 10 June.
Bolt, who clocked this year's fastest 200m time with 19.56 seconds in Kingston in May, had not run competitively since developing a tightness in his left Achilles tendon following a 300m race in Ostrava.
"I'm so glad my wound didn't disturb me after having been absent for the last five weeks," said Bolt, who revealed he prepared for the race by listening to Michael Jackson.
"'Billie Jean' put me in the best condition for this race because I was falling asleep in training. I'm very happy because the weather also helped me to run fast."
Collins not expecting top race
(St.Kitts Sports news)
St.Kitts-Nevis Caribbean Sprint Legend and FORMER World and Commonwealth Games champion Kim Collins is not expecting a 100m race to remember at Delhi 2010 - but admits he cannot blame sprint king Usain Bolt for swerving a passage to India.
Collins, 34, is one of the Caribbean and World's most decorated sprinters and despite retiring last year to spend more time at his home in St Kitts & Nevis the star dusted off the spikes to compete at the 2010 Super8 in Glasgow on Wednesday.
When Collins scooped Commonwealth gold in Manchester eight years ago, he edged out Olympic bronze medallist Uchenna Emedolu to do so and took victory in 9.98 seconds.
And he went on to scoop world gold a year later in Paris, but with the Commonwealth Games scheduled as late as October this year, a number of high-profile athletes will be absent from the Indian capital.
In athletics circles they don't come more high profile than Bolt, the three-time world and Olympic champion who holds the world records over 100m, 200m and 4x100m.
But last month, Bolt's coach Glen Mills confirmed the Commonwealth Games were never on the Jamaican's radar, ensuring the competition will be devoid of any world-class athletes and therefore devalued.
"It's going to be tough to get a good field at the Commonwealth Games this year. There will be some kids in school and then some people getting ready for the indoor season," said Collins, who finished third in Glasgow behind the USA’s Trell Kimmons and Great Britain’s Mark Lewis-Francis despite being retired from active athletics since 2009. |
