Nisbet Named Number 1
By Geno Marcello / Special to the Observer

Nisbet Plantation

With a copse of lovely sweeping coconut palm trees that could rival Donald Trump's Mar-A-Lago estate in Palm Beach, Fl., Nevis' Nisbet Plantation has just been named the top resort in the Caribbean, Bermuda and the Bahamas by none other than Travel & Leisure Magazine.

Wait. There's more. America's leading travel publication went one step farther by naming the magnificent estate plantation the 'number six hotel in the world,' based on many factors, including guest satisfaction, beauty and all the things that go up to make a tropical paradise.

Anyone who has had the opportunity to dine or sip a refreshing drink at the Nisbet Plantation would have to agree the magazine's awards went to the right resort.

This writer recalls a memorable evening two years ago at the Nisbet Plantation, when he, his daughter and retired London economist Gerald Staines enjoyed a starry night of spiney tail lobster, vintage wine and an incredible ocean sunset that still brings pleasurable feelings.

Guests who have given Nisbet Plantation their top ratings include a couple from Nashville, TN. who posted a blog on the Internet that stated, 'the pictures do not justify the beauty of this place,'

Another couple from Bermuda described the management and staff as 'engaging, friendly and service oriented...they make it a point to know your name and remembered my beverage order from the day before. The room was great, the food outstanding and our stay at the Nisbet Plantation was wonderful. We did not want to go back home.'

Nisbet Plantation has a mile-long stretch of white coral sand beach on Nevis' reef-protected north shore. Just down the road is the Robert Trent Jones Jr. 18-hole golf coourse owned by the Four Seasons Resort, its friendly competition.

The Nisbet Plantation Beach Club offers several choices of rooms to its guests, including superior rooms, deluxe suites and premier suites. The superior room complex consists of eight semi-detached cottages, each including a spacious bedroom, screened patio and king size or twin beds. Other units are equipped with wet bars, open patios and other amenities.

Dining can be formal or informal. It takes place at three restaurants, including Great House, a building with historic 18th century charm and classic decor. Guests nightly enjoy a five-course dinner in an elegant setting that is part of the natural beauty of sea, sunsets, coconut palms and tropical Nevis nights.

The pool is one of the finest in Nevis, located about 50 feet from the sea with a spectacular view of the ocean and St. Kitts.

A couple from Southampton, England that visited the Nisbet Plantation in June wrote, 'We have just spent 10 wonderful nights at Nisbet. Everything was better than I remembered and the food at the Great House was simply out of this world.'

And a traveling couple from Atlanta, GA said, 'We take almost all of our vacations in the Caribbean and Mexico. We stayed for seven days at Nisbet Plantation and this was our favorite by far of all our tropical vacations.'

The plantation's restored 1778 Great House and 36 cottages are spread among 30 acres in a lush tropical setting.

A spokesman for the plantation said, 'We were not only named number one of all St. Kitts and Nevis hotels, but the best luxury hotel in the Caribbean and Latin America in the 2008 Trip Advisor Traveler's Choice Awards.' The award is based on consistency and quality of guest reviews as posted on Trip Advisor.com.

One person who has stayed and dined at Nisbet Plantation noted, 'When Donald Trump bought the fabulous Mar-A-Lago estate from cereal heiress Marjorie Merriweather Post in Palm Beach, Fl., he thought he had purchased the most beautiful collection of coconut palm trees in the world.

'Not so. Trump may be one of the world's wealthiest men, but I don't think he ever set foot on Nisbet Plantation!'
