Nail biter concludes local Netball league

Screams of joy, well blended with screams of anguish resonated from the Grell Hull-Stevens Netball Complex last evening as the 2010 National Bank local Netball league climaxed with a thrilling contest between Stoney Grove Untouchables and Bath United.
From the outset, it was obvious that Bath United meant to make a game of it when it was observed that they had reinforced their team with players of the calibre of Natalie Nisbett-Sutton, Nicky Nisbett and Cleopatra Perry.

Stoney Grove Untouchables however remained steadfast with their tried and proven line up, which included former West Indies captain Lydia Claxton, Tasha Forrester. Rhonda Thompson and Latasha Isles.

Both teams commenced the game on such an aggressive note that umpire Jeannette Grell Hull had to pause the game long enough to tell both teams ‘simmer down’.
The two undefeated teams in the tournament however played their hearts out much to the appreciation of the sizeable and vociferous crowd. At the end of the first quarter, the score was 7 goals all with neither team backing down. By the end of the second quarter, Bath United had edged into a narrow lead, being in front by a mere one goal.—the score was 13 to 12 in their favour.

For the third quarter, Bath United made a tactical move by replacing goal shooter Kernesia Parry and goal attack Dionne Howell with sisters Nicky Nisbett and Natalie Nisbett-Sutton. At the end of the quarter, Stoney Grove had secured a definitive two goal advantage. They were leading with the score line 25 goals to 23.

The crowd was on edge as it all came down top the final quarter to determine the 2010 National Bank champions of Netball. The experienced Stoney Grove team shot three early goals without a response from the Bath team much to the jubilation of ‘Shatta’ and her crew but suddenly it was Natalie Nisbett –Sutton moving across the court with lightening agility to intercept and make impossible steals to set up the plays for an assault on the opposition’s net. Suddenly the very quiet Bath United bench was hopping and screaming again, with Winston ‘Papa’ Parris making his presence felt in the stands. With no scores visible on the score board, one could only sense that there was not much separating the two teams as the seconds ticked away. When the final whistle was blown, the much anticipated announcement came: Stoney Grove Untouchables had won by the narrowest of margins—33 goal’s to 32!

Treasurer of the Netball Association Allister Thompson also revealed that with the score on 33 to 32 as the moments ticked away, Bath United missed no fewer than three clear goals. Stoney Grove Untouchables therefore the local champion of Netball on Nevis for 2010.

In the first game of the evening, Majestics totally outplayed St.Thomas’ United two with a score line of 47 to 5.

Immediately following the final game, the closing exercises were held. In a ceremony chaired by Allister Thompson, the following presentations were made:

· MVP of the tournament—Derika Parry of St.Thomas’ United
· Most accurate shooter-Latasha Isles of Stoney Grove Untouchables
· Best defensive team-Bath United
· Most disciplined team—Majestics

· Knock out champions-Stoney Grove Untouchables
· 3rd placed team—St.Thomas’ United one
· 2nd placed team-Bath United
· 1st placed team-Stoney Grove Untouchables

The players from the three top teams all received medals.

A special plaque was also presented to Patron of the league Alpha Jeffers for her outstanding contrinbution to Netball throughout the years. The award was collected by a family member.

President Jeannette Grell Hull also released the names of a squad of players who will go into training immediately after Culturama with the intention of representing the National team at either the senior level or the under 23 level—or both. They will meet at the Grell Hull-Stevens Netball Complex on Tuesday 27th July for a very important meeting. The full squad reads:

Female one off finals set for tonight

President of the Nevis Cricket Association Ronald Powell has indicated that after the break in the matches due to inclement weather, a one off finals will be played this evening between the finalists in both the top and bottom zones.

Weather permitting, it means therefore that St.James’ will play Super Rockers in match one starting at 6.30 pm and in the grand finale, Empire will take on Highlights Int in the next game

The prize giving ceremony and closing exercises will be held at the end of the second game.

When asked about the fact that Culturama will officially start down town Charlestown this evening as well, Powell explained that his Association never had any intentions to clash with the festival committee but they needed to get the league completed before the festival goes into full swing.

Tonight will also see a crucial clash in the West Indies T-20 tournament between the Leewards and Jamaica. The Association is making plans to get a television at the pavilion so that spectators can also watch that game live on ESPN.

Malinger, Mural leave Sri Lanka sniffing win
Cricinfo

In the last series in 2008, M&M maimed India. Today, another M&M combination, Mural and Malinger, have sucker-punched India. Muttra Muralitharan collected his 67th five-for to help Sri Lanka enforce the follow-on before Lasith Malinga knocked the fight out of India by removing both Sachin Tendulkar and Rahul Dravid near the end of the day. India, never great in batting out draws, were left with an uphill task if they are to get out of jail at Galle.

Muralitharan broke the back of India's resistance in the first innings by taking out MS Dhoni and Yuvraj Singh, after Virender Sehwag's soft dismissal, and forced India to bat again. Malinga took over the demolition job in the second. India had seemingly recovered from their tea-time score of 68 for 2 as Dravid and Tendulkar settled the nerves with a fine, risk-free 119-run partnership. Tendulkar, especially, showcased delicious timing but both were ambushed by Malinga.

India 276 (Sehwag 109, Murali 5-63) and 181 for 5 trail (Tendulkar 84, Laxman 9*,) Sri Lanka 520 for 8 by 63 runs

Pakistan takes charge as Australia crumble for 88
Cricinfo

Headingley produced another of the extraordinary days that has littered its history as Australia were blown away for a paltry 88 before Pakistan built a lead of 60 with seven wickets in hand. Mohammad Asif and Mohammad Aamer, who was on a hat-trick straight after lunch, were again outstanding with devastating late movement, and were well supported by Umar Gul, after Ricky Ponting decided to bat first. In reply Pakistan moved to 148 for 3 when bad light ended play.

Four days after having to install a new captain following Shahid Afridi's shock Test retirement, the new man handed the debatable honour, Salman Butt, probably made his best move of the day by losing the toss. Ponting took a brave call after torrential overnight rain, and with heavy morning cloud cover, putting faith in his top order to weather the challenge. But the gamble backfired in startling fashion as Australia crumbled to their seventh lowest first-innings total of all time.

Pakistan 148 for 3 (Amim 1*, Umar Akmal 8*) lead Australia 88 (Aamer 3-20, Asif 3-30) by 60 runs.

FOOTBALL

Don Dyer making a name for himself

Football Coach, within the Ministry of Social Development, Leroy ‘Jun Jun’ Sweeney revealed yesterday that two Nevisian youthful Footballers are an integral part of the St.Kitts –Nevis under 17 Football team which is currently seeking to qualify for the upcoming under 17 world cup.

Both youngsters play for the very competitive Charlestown Secondary School team in the local Nevis Football Association league and for the Combined Schools team in the Federation High School championships.

They are Don Dyer who according to Sweeney is presently the lead striker in the team and Dillon Thompson who is currently nursing an injury. Dyer journeyed to Antigua yesterday with the rest of the Federation team in their preliminary round bid to get past the other teams in the zone which include Antigua and Barbuda, Jamaica and Trinidad and Tobago. Thompson who is presently undergoing treatment for his injury will be reassessed after the matches in Antigua and will hopefully play a key role as his team hopefully progresses.

Sweeney was especially proud of Dyer who he indicated started as a goalkeeper and was rated as very good then. He however stated that he spotted something more in the youngster and took him from the goal and coached him into the skills of being a striker and he now rates him as one of the best in the Federation at his age.

It was what he referred to as a Coach’s instinct but the decision to take Dyer out of goal did not go down well with many of the pundits at the time, but now the move is reaping dividends.

After the Antigua leg, the team will return to the Federation, break for about two days and get set for the next leg in the series of intense encounters.

Rain thwarts Female Cricket finals

Persistent rain over the last few days has hampered the staging of the grand finals in the female cricket league. The finals were originally planned for a best of three format, but that may well change drastically as the Nevis Cricket Association had no plans to extend the league into the upcoming Culturama Festival season.

Yesterday afternoon the Eastern end of the park was waterlogged, resembling a mini swimming pool and the affected area took in portions of the playing area which ruled out the possibility of cricket last evening. More showers of rain from a passing tropical wave created more problems later.

President Ronald Powell has indicated that a final ruling on the way forward will be made sometime today but one suggestion is for the park to be allowed another day to dry out, hoping there is an ease in the rainfall and then probably play a one off finals on Thursday evening followed by the closing exercises.

It has also been revealed that a 14 member Nevis squad will be released shortly to participate in a 10/10 encounter versus a St.Kitts team on Wednesday 28th July—the day that Grove Park is slated to be renamed of Nevisian cricketing pioneer, Elquemedo Willet.

Wasim Mintos stars on day one

Nevisian Wasim Mintos starred for the Leewards under 19 team on day one of their 4th round encounter versus Trinidad and Tobago in the TCL West Indies under 19 tournament.

The Leewards won the toss and elected to bat first and were in early trouble when they lost Nevisian opening batsman Duan Webbe for a duck with the score on 1. His opening partner then went with the score on 13, also for a golden duck. Hayden Walsh Jr then perished for 6 with the score on 14. However, Kittitian Akeem Saunders played solidly for 45 and there were contributions of 15 from Cornwall, 21 from Burton and 43 from Nevisian all rounder Adelvin Phillip.

Things were looking rather bleak with the Leeward Islanders on 143 for 8 when Mintos came to the crease. He led the way in an enterprising partnership of 79 crucial runs with Henry who contributed 38 before he perished. Mintos then successfully took charge as he shielded number eleven Williams skilfully to take the score from 222 for 9 to 245 all out with Williams contributing 2. Mintos was left high and dry on 64 not out.

The Trinidad and Tobago team was off to an impressive response with both openers moving smoothly to 86 before the lone wicket for their innings fell. It was Wasim Mintos again, brought in as the sixth bowler of the innings who forced Alexis into error to have him well caught by Walsh on 42. At the end of day one, Trinidad and Tobago was still comfortably placed on 93 for 1 with Joseph not out on 43. Mintos so far has bowled 2 overs for 6 runs with the lone wicket so far.

In other matches: Jamaica 177 all out and the Windwards in response 56 for 1
Barbados 204 all out and Guyana in response 5 for no loss.

Female league Finals affected by Rain

There was more disappointment for cricket lovers last evening as weather conditions forced a further postponement of the best of three finals in the female cricket league. Even though chief grounds man Jabal Walwyn had ensured that the main square had been covered all weekend long, there were wet patches affecting the run ups and apparently there was some seepage onto the pitch as well.

President of the Nevis Cricket Association Ronald Powell however indicated that his Association was intent on completing the matches this week and weather permitting the finals will be played this evening, Wednesday night and Thursday night if necessary.
Final arrangements are also being made for the closing ceremony and prize giving to be done as soon as the winners are determined.

President Powell also revealed that a 14 member squad will be selected by this evening and will be announced shortly. This squad will be chosen based on current performances in the ongoing league and will represent Nevis in a 10/10 encounter on the evening of July 28th when Grove Park is set to be renamed in honour of cricketing pioneer, Elquemedo Tonito Willet.

Last evening there were heavy showers of rain as a passing system affected the Leeward Islands. The general public will be informed later today as to the possibility of play this evening. Grounds man Jabal Walwyn is however seeking assistance with the removal of the covers once the weather holds fair.

Leewards bringing strong all round game says Banks
Windiescricket.com

No bravado, no big talk, no lofty predictions. The Leeward Islands will simply be looking to play good, basic cricket in their pursuit of the winner’s trophy at the West Indies Cricket Board’s Caribbean T20 Tournament. This is the word from experienced allrounder Omari Banks as his side continued to prepare for the showpiece event to be played in Barbados and Trinidad from July 22 to 31.

Banks has been elevated to the role of vice captain and he spoke of the side’s unity, camaraderie and belief in each other as they worked hard in a six-day camp at the Sir Vivian Richards Cricket Ground in Antigua.

“We have a good team and we will be backing ourselves to do well. We will be playing for each other. Most of the guys have been playing together for a while now so we know and understand each other. Maybe you won’t get as much bravado from us as you would from other teams, but inside our hearts we are confident we can go in and give a really good show,” Banks said.

“We have a mixture of good young players and some players who have been around for a while and who have made good contributions to Leeward Islands cricket over the years. We just ended the Leeward Islands T20 tournament and now we are in camp, so we are hoping to get everything right for the Caribbean T20. We have some good batsmen in form and the bowlers are also looking quite sharp.

The well-built six-footer added: “We put our stuff down to our performances on the field. Twenty20 cricket is the kind of game that can change very, very quickly and we are fully aware of that. We won’t be worried about a lot of the big talk coming from some of the other teams. We are going to go out and play our style of cricket and look to create momentum and capitalize on our opportunities.”

The Leewards will be led by hard-hitting allrounder Wilden Cornwall and the side also includes former captain Runako Morton, left-hander Shane Jeffers, and Tonito Willett, who will be the main batsmen. The bowling is led by pacers Gavin Tonge and Lionel Baker; while leg-spinner Anthony Martin is expected to perform well.

During the Caribbean T20 the Leewards will play in Zone A alongside Canada, Jamaica and Trinidad and Tobago. Their opening match is against the Jamaicans on July 22 at 8 pm at Kensington Oval. They return to the same venue to face Trinidad and Tobago on July 24 at 8 pm. Their final preliminary match will be against Canada on July 28 at 4 pm at Queen’s Park Oval.

'I can play under any captain' - Mohammad Yousuf
Cricinfo staff

Former Pakistan captain Mohammad Yousuf is ready to come out of retirement sooner rather than later, further broadening the possibility of an appearance at some point for Pakistan in the summer.

Yousuf, who announced his sudden retirement after a win-less tour of Australia, had said recently he was targeting the tour of UAE later this year to make a return, but the team's struggles in the first Test against Australia at Lord's may have prompted him to change his mind.

"I am available any time for my national team," Yousuf said in Karachi. "If the team doesn't need me I stand retired. But if I'm needed, I am ready and available to serve my country. If PCB invites me with respect I will definitely go and join the team."

Ijaz Ahmed, Pakistan's assistant coach, hinted at Yousuf's possible return. "He can replace Afridi but the management haven't decided yet who will come. It could come out in a couple of days. Maybe later, somebody will come but not at the moment.
Pakistan made scores of 148 and 289 with only one batsman, Salman Butt, managing to pass fifty. They lost 11 of their wickets to Shane Watson and the part-time spinner Marcus North.

Though their bowlers competed well, the batsmen fell short mainly due to the lack of experience in the middle order, which was missing the pedigree of Yousuf and Younis Khan for differing reasons.

In the immediate aftermath of the Lord's loss speculation centred on the PCB sending out an SOS to Yousuf, but Ijaz Butt denied that was the case. The matter of Yousuf and Younis's return was considered at a meeting the chairman held with team management to appoint a new captain, but was deferred until after the second Test against Australia, officials insisting they were happy with the performances of debutantes Azhar Ali and Umar Amin

Bolt veto leads to calls for athletics tax law changes

BBC Sports

UK Athletics (UKA) has called for changes to Britain's tax laws after sprinter Usain Bolt pulled out of a London meeting for financial reasons.

The Jamaican will miss August's Diamond League event at Crystal Palace because of the tax bill he would face.

"It is regrettable ... that British fans are denied the chance to see this amazing talent," said a UKA statement.

"We are, with other sports, continuing to work towards a resolution to secure his presence at our events in future."

Triple Olympic champion Bolt, 23, pulled out of the showdown with rivals Asafa Powell and Tyson Gay because he would have to pay a 50% tax rate on his appearance fee, as well as a proportion of his worldwide earnings, despite his not living in the country.
The existing tax law led to Wembley missing out on hosting football's 2010 Champions League final, although changes have now been implemented which have enabled the stadium to host the 2011 final and they also cover the 2012 Olympics.

Sports Minister Hugh Robertson told BBC Radio he was "happy to look at it and see if I can help," if there was a particular issue preventing Bolt's appearance, but he thought it was unlikely the rules could be changed in time for this year's Diamond League meeting on 13-14 August.

"I've not had a direct approach from either the sport's governing body [UK Athletics] or the promoters of the Crystal Palace meeting [Fast Track] so I don't know exactly what we are dealing with here," he said.

"It is a problem we have come across and addressed with other sports and clearly if they write to me I will take it up with the treasury.

Coaching Clinic going well

Cricketing Coach within the Ministry of Social Development Carl Tuckett has indicated that the first week of the 2010 Bank of Nevis Cricket Coaching clinic went very well.
The young cricketers have been divided into various groups based on their ages and several of the under 19 cricketers on Nevis have volunteered to assist in coaching the youngsters.

According to Tuckett who is the chief Coordinator of the program, during the first week, quite a lot of time was spent on fielding and catching drills as these have been determined as weak areas. On Friday morning, the young cricketers engaged in the theory of the game and were taught the basics in terms of the grip on the bat, stance, the use of the crease as a bowler and they were also taught to differentiate the different creases and their purpose.

This week they will be able to do a lot more batting and bowling and Tuckett is estimating that by Tuesday 20th July, he would be able to commence a series of matches between the various age groups which will serve as a fitting climax to the two week camp.

Gayle not discarded as captain, say Jamaica
Cricinfo staff

The Jamaica Cricket Association has backed its decision to nominate Tamar Lambert as captain for the forthcoming Caribbean T20 instead of Chris Gayle, who leads West Indies. They have also denied suggestions that Gayle was discarded as captain and said that Lambert was a logical choice as he has played regularly for Jamaica over the last few seasons, as opposed to Gayle, who has been busy with international commitments.
"Chris has not played a lot of games for Jamaica over the last couple of years and with Tamar being around the players for an extended period; it stands to reason they (selectors) may have wanted to keep Tamar for continuity. Tamar is more familiar with the guys," Jamaica's cricket operations manager, Courtney Francis, told CMC Sports. "[It's best to] have Chris just come in and do what he does best, hit away the ball and win matches for us."

Lambert had the credentials to back his case, having led Jamaica to a hat-trick of titles in the four-day competitions in the last few seasons.” I cannot speak with any great authority on why the selectors found favour with Tamar," Francis said. "I don't know if it has to do with his record or with continuity as it speaks to the Jamaica line-up. Though Chris is here, [it may be a situation of] giving Chris a little rest from the stress of just captaining in a West Indies series.

"Maybe this would just allow Chris to concentrate on his batting only and give us some mammoth performances which we know he's capable of."

Nevis Teachers Union appeals for help for CUT game
s

Secretary of the Nevis Teachers’ Union Donna Browne, yesterday appealed for help from businesses and individuals alike towards meeting the cost of taking approximately forty young Nevisian athletes to St.Kitts in order for them to participate in the Caribbean Union of Teachers (C.U.T) meet which will be held there shortly.

In an interview conducted at Grove Park, Ms Browne indicated that the overall cost will be in the vicinity of $17,000.00 EC with a requirement of $150.00 US per child for registration. The main expense however is the accommodation as the children will be staying at the Marriott Resort. There are presently 35 athletes in training but this will eventually get to a grand total of 40.

Head Coach Elquemedo Willet noted that some of the main athletes were currently unavailable with some off island for the summer vacation but is still confident that Nevis will win at least ‘one or two medals’. He however expressed the confidence that the athletes will generally give a good account of themselves, based on the work they have done so far.

President/Owner of the Gladiators track and field club, Mr. Wakeley Daniel was quick to point out the significance of the competition level as athletes from right across the Caribbean will be participating. This includes athletes from Jamaica, Trinidad and Tobago and Barbados. These countries normally send quality athletes he noted. He however is confident that Nevis will return with no fewer than five medals. This will be a major achievement in the circumstances, he stated. Nevis would have gained two medals on two occasions during past meets.

According to the Caribbean Union of Teachers web site, “the CUT Track and Field Championships was a result of the CUT's recognition of the need to provide the young athletes aged 8-15 years with some regional competition. There was also recognition by the CUT that sports have a significant role to play in the regional integration process. These particular Championships would bring together the students and teachers of the Caribbean for a few days of friendly competition, camaraderie and co-operation”.
These Championships have been a breeding ground for some of the Caribbean 's most outstanding Track and Field athletes for example Obadele Thompson of Barbados, Veronica Campbell of Jamaica, and Najuma Fletcher of Guyana.

This year’s meet will be held at the Silver Jubilee Stadium in St.Kitts for Friday July 23rd to Saturday July 24th concluding at about 4 pm.

The officials made a concerted appeal for all Nevisians to go over to encourage the athletes as they strive for glory.
