Leeds, England Service to Commemorate Christina Sinking

July 31 – Those who died in the Christina Disaster will be remembered on Sunday during a Commemorative Service.

The St. Kitts and Nevis Association in Leeds, England will commemorate the 40th anniversary of the tragedy, which occurred on Saturday August 1st 1970 when the inter-island ferry sank off Nags Head, St. Kitts at 4:10 p.m. with some 233 persons losing their lives. 99 persons survived.

“As one of the largest concentrated Kittitian and Nevisian population outside of the Federation, we feel that we owe it to the families of those who lost their lives on that ill-fated day almost 40 years ago,” said Association President, Sylvester Leader.

He said the theme of the commemoration is “Tragedy, Challenge, Hope and Triumph” and a special booklet will be distributed to mark the occasion.

Leader said that the Commemorative Service will be held at St. Aidans Anglican Church, Roundhay Leeds LS8 5QD commencing at 4 p.m. There will be a gathering in Leeds of Nationals living throughout the UK to mark the occasion.
