Another Historic Win for Team Kayamba- Best Player Indonesia 2010
By Lauren Gumbs
On Sunday night, August 1st Sriwijaya FC beat Arema 2-1 in the Piala Indonesia final with Keith Kayamba Gumbs scoring the first goal and being awarded the Best Player in Indonesia for 2010.
The Piala final was held at Stadium Manahan in Javanese Solo.
No goals were scored in the first half of the final between Sriwijaya and Arema Indonesia and after a controversial situation at half time the tension rose to a peak in the packed out stadium as Kayamba headed the ball past Arema goalkeeper Kurnia Meiga.
The equalizer was a scored by M. Rihduan on a cross, bringing the nearly 50 000 Arema fans into a frenzy, but not too long after, to Arema’s dismay, Sriwijaya’s Pavel Solomin brought SFC into the lead.
Earlier, during the first half, the Arema captain Noh Alam Shah was given a red card, causing a stir amongst the home crowd.
In the half time break the Solo Chief of Police demanded the game suspended until the referee was replaced.
This caused a delay of almost forty five minutes before the problem was mediated and the game continued with the original referee on field, subsequently elevating the excitement of the fans and the anxiety of army and police stationed across the stadium.
When the whistle sounded Sriwijaya made history yet again as the reigning Indonesian champions three years in a row, winning four trophies in that time.
In the victory celebration Keith ‘Kayamba’ Gumbs was called to the podium and presented with the Best Player Indonesia 2010 trophy, a win he says left him speechless with pride and happiness.
“I don’t know how I feel; I don’t know what to say except that I’m so happy and proud of what Sriwijaya has accomplished.”
Coach Rahmad Darmawan, who led Sriwijaya to their victorious reign, went out with a bang, the emotion clearly written on his face as he concluded his last night as coach of SFC.
The football season is now at a close with Ramadan preparations underway in Indonesia. Puasa, the fasting month begins August 11th.

Wasim Mintos tells his side of the story
Wasim Mintos and his step Dad Errol Somersall believe that the young cricketer has received a raw deal at the hands of the management team in charge of the Leeward Islands under 19 team presently in St.Lucia. Young Mintos was unceremoniously sent back home on the evening of Friday 30th July.
An email correspondence sent by Roland Holder of the West Indies Cricket Board to LICA Board President Gregory Shillingford and copied to Nevis Cricket chief, Ronald Powell, indicated in part: “………..that as a result of a disciplinary infraction involving Wasim Mintos a hearing was held and it was determined that he should be returned home to Nevis”.
In an exclusive interview yesterday with Sports caster Curtis Morton, Mintos accompanied by his step Dad, Errol Somersall sought to give his version of the incident.
He explained that on the evening of Thursday 29th July, some of his team mates came into the hotel room with lots of mud on their shoes. They proceeded to wash off the mud in the hand sink and in the shower. During this time, he (Mintos) exited the room.
On his return he was shocked to discover one of his shirts lying on the floor, soaked with water and mud. He stated: “I said a few words because I was angry”. One of the guys who he was addressing was on the phone with his Mom and apparently she heard what was being said and later called Coach Winston Benjamin and complained of his behaviour.
According to Mintos, Benjamin never gave him the chance to explain himself but told him that he would be sent home. He further indicated that it was while he was on the way to the airport, the Manager asked him what had happened and when he explained, the Manger stated that he would not have sent him home for that ‘as the other guys swear too’.
He however indicated that he had apologized to the team and its Management before he came home.
Errol Somersall, who has assisted in the raising of Mintos from a little child, was very upset. He stated that up to the point of the interview nobody in authority had called either him or Mintos’ mother to indicate what he had done. He was also upset at the way a seventeen year old youngster was just placed on a plane just like that and sent back to Nevis without contact made with his parents.
Somersall, who has served in a managerial position for various Nevis teams, is also appalled that such a crucial decision as a player being sent home was apparently made single handily by the Coach of the team. “That’s not proper management,’ he observed.
He indicated that he has already expressed his displeasure through Mr. Ronald Powell, President of the Nevis Crciket Association who indicated that he is investigating the matter. He also indicated that he had chastised Mintos for using expletives but is definitely unhappy with how the matter was handled.
President Powell when contacted indicated that when he saw Wasim in town over the holiday weekend, he assumed that the Leeward Islands team had completed the tournament. He did not see the correspondence from Roland Holder until he got home that same evening. He has since sent a correspondence to President of LICA, Mr. Gregory Shillingford seeking clarification on the matter and has specifically asked for a copy of the management report on the incident.
Mintos who played a few matches in the TCL tournament indicated that he was having a good tournament prior to the incident. He especially loved his innings of a half century which he made batting at number ten, when he hit 6 sixes and 3 fours. “The ball was coming nicely out of the middle of the bat;” he stated.
What’s next for the young cricketer? He plans to report to the Nevis senior team practice sessions starting next week and looks forward to at least one more year at the under 19 level, if given the chance next year.
‘Something like this won’t happen again’, he stated with conviction.

Leewards bat Burton goes on six-hitting spree in TCL Group Under-19
Windiescricket.com
Shane Burton, the Leeward Islands batsman, smashed an amazing 16 sixes as he made a magnificent 172 from just 103 balls in the final round of matches in the TCL Group-sponsored West Indies Cricket Board Under-19 One-Day Trophy matches played on Wednesday in St Lucia.
The 18-year-old left-hander, who has played for Antigua & Barbuda in the Leeward Islands senior tournament, also hit 14 boundaries in his record-breaking innings. It bolstered the Leewards score to 278-5 off 39 overs as they beat the Windward Islands by 98 runs to bring a thrilling climax to the three-week cricket festival. Burton hit the ball to all parts of the field and was dismissed in the 30th over as he had his eyes set on a double-century.
“It feels good to know I played so well today and we went on to win the match. I was happy to end on a high note. I was getting some good starts earlier in the tournament but I was not carrying on. Today I decided to get it all in one,” said Burton, who hails from the Gray’s Farm area near St John’s in Antigua. “I was not focusing enough in the earlier matches, so I decided to play my natural game, which is to attack the bowling. I was disappointed I did not get a double-century. At the water break I had my eyes on a ‘double’ but I fell short.”
At the end of Wednesday the team celebrating was Trinidad and Tobago as they won the title. They had an easy five-wicket win over Guyana in a match reduced to 20 overs. The Trinidadians ended on 14 points, four more than Jamaica, who beat Barbados by four wickets in a high-scoring affair.

Two Nevis Reps for LICA Board meeting

The meeting will be held at the Little Bay Hotel in St.Maarten and will commence at 9.30 am on Saturday 7th and conclude on Sunday 8th August. This meeting is a continuation of a meeting called on June 19th 2010 and therefore the same Agenda will be maintained subject to any amendments at the commencement of the meeting.
Some of the issues to be discussed and finalized include the revised LICA 3 day and Nagico one day tournament fixtures; the status of cricket in all of the related territories and nominations to various positions i.e. (Selectors, Coaches and Managers at various age groups).
Female Cricket Finals set for next week
President of the Nevis Cricket Association, Ronald Powell has indicated that the much anticipated Female cricket finals will be held next week. The matches which will be played between St.James’ and Super Rockers in the bottom four clash and Highlights Int versus Empire in the top four clash, will commence on the evening of Thursday 12th August. The second set of matches in the best of three format will be played on Saturday 14th August and if needs be, the final series of matches will be played on Sunday 15th August.

The finals were initially postponed until after the Culturama season.
Courtney Browne appointed WICB Selector
Clyde Butts and Robert Haynes returned to Selection Panel
St, John’s, Antigua: The West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) approved the recommendation from the Review Committee to appoint former West Indies wicket-keeper Courtney Browne to the West Indies Selection Panel. The decision was taken at the last meeting of the Board of Directors in St Lucia as the term of office for the Selection Panel came to an end on July 31, 2010.
Browne will join Chairman Clyde Butts and Robert Haynes who – also following the recommendation of the Review Committee – have both been reappointed for a new two year term which will expire on July 31, 2012.
“I thank the WICB for a new term on the Selection Panel. I’m pleased as well to be reappointed Chairman of the Selection Panel and I am confident that we will work closely as a group as we continue on a restructuring pathway,” Chairman Butts said.
“I welcome Courtney to the Panel and look forward to working with him and Robert along with Head Coach Ottis Gibson as we put our best efforts together to move West Indies cricket forward,” said the 53 year old Butts who appeared in seven Tests and 87 first-class matches.
Newcomer to the Selection Panel, Browne said that he considered the opportunity to serve West Indies cricket in the esteemed capacity as an honour and privilege.
“It is a privilege to be afforded the opportunity to serve West Indies cricket again. I feel honoured and I will put my best foot forward,” commented the 39 year old Browne.
Browne said that the fact that he is still actively involved in the game will be an asset as he serves on the Selection Panel.
“I would have played cricket with some of the players who are still in the West Indies team and there is a lot more involved in cricket now and so I think I will be able to relate to the players a lot better,” Browne said.
Browne previously served as an Alternate Selector on the previous Selection Panel alongside Stuart Williams and Nehemiah Perry. Browne has served as the Chairman of the Barbados Cricket Association Selection Panel for the past two years and was also a Barbados Team Manager in addition to captaining that country’s side prior to his retirement.
Critically, against the background that the performance of the West Indies team has been disappointing and unsatisfactory, the Board has undertaken to prepare a Selection Policy Document. This document will include clear guidelines pertaining to the direction in which the WICB will take with regard to the selection of West Indies teams.
Upon its completion the Selection Policy Document will be provided to Chairman Butts and his Selection Panel in order to aid and guide the Panel in the execution of its mandate.
The Board noted that Butts chaired the Selection Panel with Haynes as a member at a time when West Indies cricket faced immense challenges and when several players were injured or unfit causing them to be unavailable for important engagements. The Board recognized that these situations undoubtedly hampered the Selection Panel in selecting the best possible West Indies team at all times.
The Review Committee comprised WICB CEO Dr. Ernest Hilaire, Chairman of the WICB Cricket Committee Joel Garner, former West Indies captain Clive Lloyd and WICB Chief Cricket Operations Officer Tony Howard. The Review Committee interviewed several candidates, including all three of their nominees, before arriving at their final recommendations. Courtney Walsh, a member of the Cricket Committee, was regrettably unavailable and could not take his appointed position on the Review Committee for the interviews.
Browne replaces former West Indies spinner Raphick Jumadeen on the Panel.
Dr. Hilaire thanked Jumadeen for his services during his term.
“On behalf of the Board I would like to thank Raphick for his selfless services during the two year term he spent on the Selection Panel and given his dedication to West Indies cricket I am certain he will continue to be involved in the development of the sport in the future,” Dr. Hilaire said.

HORSE RACING
Obama Maintains unbroken run by a nose!
It was the final race of the day at the Culturama races 2010. There was much anticipation at the Indian Castle race track as the undefeated OBAMA who had run from June last year and won every single race in which it had participated, was coming up against Brule River of the MS Stables, ridden by the experienced Jason Liburd. The crowd had increased tremendously as the afternoon wore on and now the stands were filled and the nearby fences were literally lined with people anxious to see the outcome of this the climaxing race of the day.
Even the owners were not their usual cool self. Mr. Arthur Sharpe was last seen pacing in the stables; a brave Roosevelt ‘Felt’ Daniel was conspicuous in the circle area, nervously conversing with the chief Steward, George Morris. The Dore brothers of the Arc Stables tried to look cool but they knew that it was going to be a big test for Obama.
After the usual nervous preliminaries from horses and Jockeys, the horses then went into a merry canter and the red flag went down and ever so slowly the white flag followed suit. The race was well and truly on.
As they took the first bend, ‘Felt’ Daniel was smiling, his horse Dominquero was in front with a definite lead. This lead continued around the second turn and along the back stretch. Dominquero even maintained the lead up that difficult hill just prior to the home stretch but for those watching closely it would have been noticed that OBAMA had taken the hill exceptionally well and had closed the gap markedly.
Down the home stretch—there were shouts of ‘Obama, Obama’ as the champion horse ran alongside Dominquero skilfully manoeuvred by Colin Ross and seconds before passing the finish line, he just nosed ahead—as close a finish as you can get and what a way to climax a very exciting meet.
Prior to that thrilling race, there were three other interesting races. The summarized results are as follows:
Race one:
1st Sheik Sung ridden by Brem Liburd
2nd Rosman
3rd High Spirit
Race two:
1st Gottogetta Rhythm ridden by Brem Liburd
2nd She Devil
3rd Cover Girl
Race three:
1st Full Breed ridden by Colin Ross
2nd Fire Storm
3rd El Avion
Race Four:
1st Obama ridden by Colin Ross
2nd Dominquero
3rd Brule River
4th Quamba
The meet had additional significance as star Jockey Jason Liburd made a rare appearance after some five years away from the Indian Castle race track. Jason is now resident in St.Kitts and is a major feature at the Beaumont Park Meets on that island.
All in all, the meet was very well coordinated; there were no incidents of concern and the fun loving crowd was highly entertained.

Foo does it again as Guyana lift Caribbean T20 trophy
Guyana’s Jonathan Foo produced a magical display of power-hitting to stun Barbados and single-handedly won the inaugural West Indies Cricket Board’s Caribbean T20 title for his country. Before Saturday’s epic final match, the 19-year-old right-hander had showed great enterprise but he saved the best for the last night at Queen’s Park Oval in Port-of-Spain.
Foo struck four crunching boundaries – including two off the first two balls of the final over – and three magnificent sixes in an unbeaten 42 from 17 balls that turned the game completely. He entered the arena with Guyana tottering on 72-5 at the end of the 14th over. He however remained calm and played to his strength – which is hitting straight – much to the delighted of many of his countrymen in the large crowd of over 12 000, and millions around the world viewing on the match on ESPN and ESPN2.
For their brilliant effort Guyana won the sparkling, new Caribbean T20 trophy, which was presented to skipper Ramnaresh Sarwan by Dr Julian Hunte, President of the West Indies Cricket Board. They have also took home a cheque for US25 000 and booked a place in the Airtel Champions League, to be played in South Africa in September.
Foo, the son of a Chinese father and Indian mother, shared an unbeaten last wicket stand on 24 from 11 balls with last man Devendra Bishoo, who had the honour of hitting the winning run. At that point the Guyanese fans were overcome with joy and ran onto the field to celebrate with their new baby-faced heroes. It was extra-special night for the two lads from Albion in Berbice, as Foo was named Man-of-the-Match and Bishoo was adjudged the CT20’s Most Valuable Player for his brilliant leg-spin bowling.
“For me, I have a simple method …. I see the ball and I hit it … full stop,” Foo said.
Guyana 135 for 9 (Foo 42*, Nurse 5-35) beat Barbados 134 for 5 (Carter 57*, Bishoo 2-14) by one wicket.

Oldest Test cricketer Eric Tindill dies
Cricinfo staff
Eric Tindill the former New Zealand cricket and rugby international, died on Sunday, August 1, at the age of 99 years and 226 days. Tindill was the oldest Test cricketer of all time as well as the oldest surviving All Black.
Tindill had become the oldest Test cricketer on November 8 2009, when he overtook Francis MacKinnon's record of 98 years and 324 days. He played 69 first-class matches for Wellington and five Tests for New Zealand on either side of the Second World War. Tindill also went on to referee in rugby Tests and was an umpire in a cricket Test between New Zealand and England in Christchurch in 1959 alongside Jack Cowie, with whom Tindill had combined to dismiss Don Bradman in his only match against a New Zealand side.
A left-hand opening batsman and wicketkeeper, Tindill toured England with Curly Page's team in 1937. On the way home he had the distinction of catching Bradman off Jack Cowie's bowling. The match, between New Zealand and South Australia, was played in Adelaide to help cover debts incurred in England. Cowie and Tindill were delighted with their prized wicket, but others reckoned they cost New Zealand Cricket a fortune.
Bradman was dismissed for 11 in the opening over on a Saturday morning and thousands of spectators, queuing for entry, simply turned around and left.

Gumbs’s Swirijaya stalls in Mid Table but moves on in Knock out
Captain Keith Gumbs and his men were well on their way to pick up an important away point in their most recent ISL game when all that changed within the last three minutes of regulation time.
The home team Persebaya was desperate for points as they were second from bottom, in the 18 team table and facing relegation square in the face. They got a much need boost when #33 - JUAN MARCELO CIRELLI breached the defense of Swirijaya in the 88 minute. Another dagger to the heart as Swirijaya headed back home empty from that game. The result left them in the # 8 position in the tables while the home team moved from second to last to one place above.
Relief for Swirijaya came in the knock out Cup as they defeated the # 2 ranked team in the league 5 -3 on a penalty shoot out.
Gumbs was on target in the 11th minute to record an equalizer from the penalty spot after the home team – Persipura had opened the scoring in the 2nd minute of play. Persipura went ahead again in the 57 minute only for Gumbs’s strike partner Pavel Solomin tot equalize again eight minutes later.
In the shoot out the home team was woeful missing three of the four penalties taken while Gumbs Solmin and Rivai were effective in beating the opponenets keeper.

Another successful year for Football Coaching Clinic
Eddy Richards, otherwise known as Eddy Caines has indicated that this year’s annual summer Football coaching clinic was extremely successful. A record forty plus students attended and they were all taught the basic skills of Football---dribbling, shooting, passing and goal keeping.
He was especially pleased with the assistance received from the Ministry of Sports in loaning the expertise of Football Coach, Leroy ‘Jun Jun’ Sweeney and Physical Trainer, Masefield Nisbett. Nisbett actually served in two capacities—as physical trainer and also as goal keeping Coach. He formerly represented Nevis in goal for several years.
Some of the past students at the program also showed up to assist, in particular Ashley Parris who committed several days to assisting the young players.
He was also high in praise for the many sponsors who made the program a reality. These included Nevis Multi line; Hon Mark Brantley; Social Security, Nevis Credit Union and Nevis Bakery.
The brief but impressive closing ceremony was held on Thursday 22nd July 2010 and there was another historic first. For the first time in the history of the six year program, the children were presented with certificates of participation.
What is the next move? Richards indicated that he is awaiting word from Leroy Sweeney who is in contact with Football personnel from St.Kitts who will shortly arrange a team from that island to play the best of his bunch of newly trained youngsters. Richards is confident that they will give a good account of themselves.

All set for super semi-finals in Caribbean T20
30/07/10
The top four team have made it through and the stage is set for the semi-finals of the inaugural West Indies Cricket Board’s Caribbean T20 Tournament. Both matches will be played at the Queen’s Park Oval in Trinidad on Friday. In the first match Trinidad and Tobago will take on Guyana at 4 pm (3 pm Jamaica time) while in the second match Barbados will face Jamaica at 8 pm (7 pm Jamaica Time). The two winners of the semi-finals will meet in the grand final on Saturday at 8 pm.
Trinidad and Tobago and Jamaica both qualified on Wednesday from Group A, while the Barbadians and the Guyanese both advanced after Thursday’s wash-out. All four teams had a relatively easy path to the Final Four and they will be looking to go all the way.
There is a lot at stake. The winning team will take home the sparkling, new Caribbean T20 trophy as well as US$25 000. The other big prize is a trip to the Airtel Champions League where they will compete in Group B alongside Mumbai Indians, Highveld Lions, South Australia Redbacks and Royal Challengers Bangalore. Group A will be made up of Chennai Super Kings, Victoria Bushrangers, Wayamba XI of Sri Lanka, Central Stags of New Zealand and the Warriors of South Africa.
The Caribbean T20 champs will open their campaign on Sunday, September 12 against Bangalore at SuperSports Park in Centurion. The second group stage match will be against Mumbai on Thursday, September 16 at Kingsmead in Durban, followed by a clash with the home side Highveld Lions on Sunday, September 19, at the Wanderers in Johannesburg; and a date with the Redbacks at the same venue on Tuesday, September 21. Group A was decided a day earlier with Trinidad and Tobago on top with 12 points. Jamaica finished second with eight points followed by Leeward Islands with one point (-0.730) while Canada finished in fourth spot with one point (-2.565).
India finally bowled out for 707

The second Test laboured towards its predictable end but not without India scoring some brownie points. The tenth-wicket pair of Ishant Sharma and Pragyan Ojha, who had offered resistance in the defeat in Galle, repeated the feat with much more ease and kept the Sri Lankan bowlers at bay for 27 overs on the final morning. The vigil led India to their highest score in an overseas Test in what was also their longest innings away from home in terms of overs faced.
Lunch Sri Lanka 642 for 4 dec and 19 for 0 (Paranavitana 6*, Dilshan 5*) trail India 707 (Tendulkar 203, Raina 120, Mendis 4-172) by 46 runs.
