| Model Feature: August By R. Harding |

My first pick for my female model feature was hands down my current favourite on the runways in the Federation. So I thought this time around I wanted to highlight one of my former favourites. My mind immediately went to Ana Elliot. She was chosen not only because she is a close friend of mine or because we modeled together some six or seven years ago, Ana was one of those models who even back then when my designing was minimal, I admired for their talent, undeniably sexy presence, and unique personality on and off stage. Ana is definitely one who has managed to maintain a high level of respect as a model.
She began her modeling career in 2003 under the coaching of Winnielle Pereira, who is practically a household name in SKN fashion. Ana was one the people to signed up for the first of many annual model boot camps and graduation extravaganzas. As a part of the first four models in WMM, known then as “The High Steppers”, Ana graced the stage at the event “Show Me Your Body”, showcasing the high level of training she received. When I first met her, if memory serves, she had only been with the agency one year. We were in training for one of WMM’s “Show Me Your Soul” fashion shows together. The first time I saw her walk was in one of the practices held for the event. She stood out in my memory because she was chosen to be the girl in the opening of the show. Having not ever seen her on stage before I knew that she had to be a strutter to have been chosen for this.
At 5’ 6” Ana falls into that broad category of models that aren’t short, but are not considered particularly tall either. What she does have that stands out boldly is a very slim, yet curvy figure, which she has maintained to this day, even after being blessed with two angels. (Which acts as both a gleam of hope and a thorn in the side of women like me who struggle even after only one). Her most recent fashion show was a short eight months after the birth of her son. Ana boasts current measurements of 34”-27”-36”, a combination that most designers would be grateful to have on all models they dress. Along with this jaw-dropping shape, she sports a striking face and bright smile. Frequently complemented on her wonderful facial bone structure, Ana’s face is fresh and deceptively youthful, all together creating a package made for the modeling world.
Hands down, the main reason why Miss Elliot is one of my favourites, and why she was selected to be featured, is her ability to adapt as a model. To prove this, one just needs to look at the range of hairstyles she has sported throughout the years; locks, straight, natural afro, braids, and cornrows - all of which have looked stunning on Ana. This attribute is the same in most things with Ana, head to toe. She has the ability to adapt her image to however she is dressed, even tweaking her persona to suit on stage. By far of any characteristic a model could have, I would say this is the most useful. Being a chameleon on stage and in print gives a model an advantage in potentially being hired for numerous jobs. Various designers, who are trying to achieve totally different looks, can all chose this type of model because they know regardless of what they are going for, the model can pull it off. There is nothing wrong with being the best in only one look, but it limits you. I prefer models to be a ‘jack of all looks’, than to be a king of just one.
Over the years Ana has participated in several pageants, including Miss Venus Model 2005 in Anguilla, where she was awarded Miss Photogenic, and also Miss Caribbean Model Bikini 2006 in Barbados. She has also done a few promotional jobs around the region. Though Ana is still offered jobs to model on occasion, she has stepped out of the limelight for other ventures. She says that though she is glad to see a fellow model in St. Kitts has taken up the reigns to create an agency that is making great strides in the region, she finds local models need more work than the sporadic fashion shows held here. Lately Ana has shown promise as a budding designer, though her main focus these days is her Internet-based shopping company Sugar Town Wish List, an idea born of combining her love for fashion with her talents in the industry.
