CRICKET

The Debate continues…..

Yesterday as I was about to make some transactions at a popular business place, I was approached by a former Cricketer and ardent sports enthusiast and personal friend who posed a question which led to a debate which virtually exhausted my lunch hour. We were soon joined by another friend who eagerly jumped into the debate with equal zeal.
The debate centered around the topic of selecting an all time Nevis Cricket team X1. A monumental task if you ask me!

The one problem I had was that it could have been ‘something in the food’ because both of them were enjoying separate appetizing looking meals of ground provisions and fish, while I was left to enjoy the wonderful torture of the compelling smell of their meals.

That aside however, the discussion—let’s call it a discussion, was enlightening, refreshing and revealing.

Friend number one insisted that Livingstone Sargeant could not be in his X1. When I asked why he said ‘just look at the statistics—look at Surge’s stats in regional cricket” I was quick to point out that if we are selecting an all time X1 for Nevis, the main stats to be checked would be the stats from the matches played between the Leeward Islands, as Nevis does not play against the regional teams. The players from Nevis would qualify for the Leeward Islands team based on their performances in the Leeward Islands tournament. He however insisted and ‘Sarge’ was left out of his X1.

Friend number two in revealing his X1 was just as adamant that Runako Morton would not qualify for his X1. He was not arguing about stats—his argument was over attitude.
I was then asked to name my X1, I begged for a little time to review some statistics and I now will venture my team.

Before I do that however, I must indicate that we never considered a criterion for selection. We were just speaking from our personal viewpoints.

For instance, friend number one insisted that the team could have no other captain but Ed ‘Gooner’ Arthurton. I cheekily asked for Ed’s statistics. He seemed a little stumped for a moment but then he came back with. “Ed was the best strategist as a captain and he could hold his own with both bat and ball”. I couldn’t argue too much with that because I was an eyewitness to that eventful afternoon when Ed Arthurton totally frustrated an obviously annoyed Andy Roberts at Grove Park—and Andy was never slow—and Ed manhandled him and taunted him and remain unscathed at the end of it. Unfortunately, a certain debutant by the name of Deryck Parry suffered the full wrath of Roberts with a fractured nose to show for it.

During the discussion, a hosts of names were mentioned. ‘What about Vance Amory?”’ “Oh he was always pretty to look at but always throwing away his hand’. Mention was made of a Jim Maynard from Government Road who was touted as one of the best batsmen ever to come out of Nevis, but even he did not make it into the X1. Names like Harold Walters, Theodore Walters, Oretus Jones, ‘Pasture’ Hendrickson, were all mentioned. Friend number two even toyed with the idea of making Theodore Hobson the wicketkeeper, ‘because he was once looked at for a possible West Indies selection’. Friend number one was quick to kill that thought with: “Some people get looked at because they come along at the right time when there are not too many other people to look at”. This discussion was fun!

‘Salo’ Howell also got a mention but friend number two was quick to point out that ‘his only claim to fame was that outstanding partnership with ‘Sarge’ in Antigua when the match ended in confusion’. I tell you, these two guys are hard markers! Howard Newton and Sydney Liburd both of Gingerland also got a mention—a good mention too because both gentlemen agreed that ‘those two guys could-a bat’.

After all was said and done here are the two teams selected by my friends:
Friend number one:

Stuart Williams; Livinstone Lawrence; Runako Morton; Keith Arthurton; Carl Tuckett; Ed Arthurton-capt; Deryck Parry; Mac Parris; John Maynard; Elquemedo Willet and Lipton Griffin

Friend number two:
Stuart Williams; Livingstone Lawrence; Livingstone Sargeant; Keith Arthurton; Carl Tuckett; David Parry; Deryck Parry; Ed Arthurton-capt; Mac Parris; Elquemedo Willet and Lipton Griffin.

By the way, he pointed out that David Parry, the uncle of Deryck Parry was an extra special all rounder in his time.

Friend number one then took the discussion to another level when he unabashedly proceeded to count the number of Government Road men who were in his team.

Now in the quiet solitude of my study I have sat down to select my all time X1 and immediately I recognize that I have a serious problem. What criterion must I use? Trevor Parry is the only statistician I know with accurate stats on local cricket and I cannot disturb the man at this hour of night. If I follow my original argument about stats secured in representing just Nevis, then based on that, Merlin Liburd immediately picks himself as the number one opener, having scored the most runs for Nevis; Bernette Thompson would be thundering for a place with his tremendous aggregate; Warrington Phillip will be the automatic choice for left arm leg spinner as the chief wicket taker for Nevis with over 500 record breaking scalps and Ronald Powell will be the natural choice for off spinning all rounder being second to ‘Warier’ with over 300 wickets and some serious runs as well.

So being faced with the dilemma of not having local stats on everybody, I will now also consider very seriously how all of the aforementioned gentlemen competed at the regional level and beyond

Let us look at some of their stats:
Runako Morton-first class average-40.49; Tests-22.03; one dayers-33.75
Staurt Williams-First class—40.67; tests—24.14; one dayers-32.36
Keith Arthurton—First class—46.29; tests-30.71; one dayers-26.08
Carl Tuckett—first class—30.01
Deryck Parry—first class 26.86; tests-22.41; one dayers-15.25
Bowling—first class—258 wickets at 28.95; tests-23 wickets at 40.69; one dayers-11 wickets at 23.54
Elquemedo Willet—first class-286 wickets at 28.43; tests-11 wickets at 43.81;
Kieran Powell- first class-34.76; one dayers-2.50
Livingstone Sargeant—first class average 29.60
Warrington Phillip—first class-148 wickets at 25.52
Livingstone Lawrence—first class—1,909 runs at 29.82
Merlin Liburd— first class-434 runs at 22.84
Ronald Powell—first class-292 runs at 20.85
Bowling- first class-29 wickets at 29.72
Vance Amory— first class--1,416 runs at 23.21
John Maynard— first class--35 wickets at 25.11

Based on my deliberations, this is therefore my team in batting order---hold your breaths—here goes:
Stuart Williams
Livingstone Lawrence
Runako Morton
Livingstone Sargeant
Keith Arthurton
Carl Tuckett
Deryck Parry
Mac Parris (wicketkeeper)
Ed Arthurton-Capt
John Maynard
Elquemedo Willet

Let me now explain the rational: Stuart Williams with an outsanding first class average and his obvious class is my number one opener; Livingstone Lawrence edges out his closest rivals based on the overall regional performances; Runako slots in at three with his outsanding first class performances; Livinstone Sargeant will come at four—his regional average is comparative to most and he has a superior local record; Keith Arthurton and Carl Tuckett pick themselves with reasonable regional performances and outstanding local performances; Deryck Parry will overshadow Ronald Powell in my book; Mac Parris will be my wicketkeeper—he was pretty decent in front and behind the stumps; Ed Arthurton, the ultimate strategist will be my captain and would be expected to use the new ball with John Maynard whose impressive regional and local returns pushes out Lipton Griffin from my team and with all the records that Warrington broke, it would be almost sacrilegious to leave out Nevis’ cricketing pioneer and ‘National’ hero, Elquemedo Willet from any all time team. He is the ultimate super star.

So Maynard and Ed Arthurton would use the new ball; Willet and Parry will tweak it from both ends and if they need a reprieve, I would have Keith. Lawrence and Stuart to bowl some trundlers—in that order.

Think I did not know that I have sparked off a whole new series of debates? My two friends told me not to mention their names, so just like with the food, I get the dirty end of the stick. Guess what? This argument is like when fellas get together and start to argue about the direction of the pier or the direction of a particular pitch—it never ends. So, give it your best shot—give me your X1 and guess what? Whatever you say--you are right!.

Nevis team withheld due to tournament postponement

Nevis’ Cricket chief Ronald Powell met with the Nevis senior cricket squad yesterday at the Elquemedo Willet Park. Powell congratulated the cricketers on their work ethics so far and for the tremendous work they have put in so far under the current management team, coaches and Trainers.

He reminded them of their value as role models and asked them to be examples to the 13 and under cricketers who will be looking towards them as examples.

There was some degree of disappointment though as the cricketers came eagerly anticipating the release of the team that should have been heading to Anguilla this weekend. Powell however revealed that he had received recent information from Mr. Gregory Shillingford, President of the Leeward Islands Cricket Board, who had informed him the LICA three day tournament had been postponed due to the impending threat of Hurricane Gaston and other possible storms during this busy hurricane season.

The season will now officially commence with the NAGICO one day series during the month of September and the three day series will now commence sometime in October.
Powell therefore did not release the team previously picked for Anguilla and indicated that with the initial focus being on the one day team, some changes will most likely be made for the one day encounters.

The squad will continue their training and practice sessions in the mean time and the team will be announced in due course.

NEVLEC Hosts Fun Day this Saturday

As part of their tenth anniversary celebrations, NEVLEC will be hosting a fun day tomorrow Saturday 4th September at the Ramsbury grounds—the unofficial Meritzer Williams Park.

According to Livingstone Powell, Chair Person of the fun day activities committee, it promises to be a really exciting day with quite a number of institutions and individual teams already confirming their participation for the day. He further indicated that additional teams can register even on the day of the event and there is no registration fee involved.

The teams which have already confirmed are: The St.Kitts Electricity company; NASPA; Alexandra Hospital; LIME; Social Security; Kirthly Morton’s Domino team; GASPREE; Cable TV; LEFCO; Water Department and host team NEVLEC.

The games will commence at 12.00 noon and will include: Cricket; Dominoes; Football and Athletics. The Athletic events will probably generate the most fun because outside of the usual 100 meter races and the established relays, there will be some fun races which will include: Fill the Bottle race and thread the needle.

Teams could choose to participate in all of the events or be selective and participate in specific events.

Powell further indicated that there will be some trophies up for grabs but he hinted that the host team is intent on taking all of them back to their head office.

WICB provides clarifications on Sarwan, Taylor and Deonarine

St John’s, Antigua – The WICB has received numerous queries from the media regarding the Selection Committee not having recommended Ramnaresh Sarwan, Jerome Taylor and Narsingh Deonarine for Central Retainer or Developmental contracts for the period October 1 2010 to September 30, 2011

The WICB issues the following information as clarification:

Ramnaresh Sarwan

The Team Management, Selection Committee and the WICB are concerned about Mr. Sarwan’s extremely indifferent attitude and sporadic approach towards fitness, particularly in recent years. It is the considered view of the Selection Committee, following consultations with the specialists in the Team Management, that Ramnaresh’s less than satisfactory and fluctuating fitness levels have directly contributed to multiple injuries thereby causing him to be unavailable for selection to the West Indies team.

Due to these multiple injuries, Ramnaresh was available for only 2 Test matches and a total of only 13 international matches for the West Indies in the past contract year (October 2009 to September 2010) which is less than half of the total number of matches played by the West Indies for the period.

Additionally, following the tour of Australia of 2009, Ramnaresh was one of three players who the WICB formally wrote to regarding their consistently low levels of fitness. In Ramnaresh’s case, he then spends a significant period of the tour trying to rectify his unacceptable fitness levels. Reports from the Team Management are that while one of the three players written to, improved his fitness considerably the fitness levels of the other two – Mr. Sarwan and Mr. Narsingh Deonarine – remain below par despite the official notice.

Ramnaresh has been informed by a member of the Selection Committee of the reasons for him not being offered a Central Retainer Contract. The WICB is hopeful that Ramnaresh uses this as motivation to significantly improve his overall fitness in an effort to assist in avoiding injury so that he can increase his availability to the West Indies team.

Jerome Taylor

The WICB is disappointed with Mr. Taylor’s lack of commitment to his own rehabilitation following injuries sustained in Australia in 2009 and in the ICC World Twenty20 2010. Jerome, despite being under retainer contract, has not shown the expected attendance and commitment to pursue the required assessment and consequent rehabilitative programmes that would be required.

Further it has been explained to Jerome that his physical make up requires a specific programme of fitness and exercise to ensure his availability to play cricket at the highest level and avoid frequent breakdowns. There has not been a demonstrated commitment to achieve that level of fitness and ensure that he can perform consistently at the highest level.

Narsingh Deonarine

Mr. Deonarine’s level of fitness is regrettably, unacceptable for an international cricketer. His results are below par in the majority of fitness tests conducted by the Team Management specialists. Narsingh, despite numerous opportunities, continues to show gross disregard for his fitness. Team Management has pleaded with, beseeched and cajoled Narsingh to improve his overall fitness but to no avail.

Moving forward the Selection Committee does not believe that the WICB should award Central Retainer or Developmental contracts to players who show non-compliance and defiance on matters as fundamental as player fitness and physical preparation.

The WICB emphasizes that in the ongoing development of a new team ethos – with regard to achieving outlined goals – a commitment to achieving and maintaining a high level of physical and medical fitness among other criteria (as outlined in the Selection Criteria) will be closely supervised and rigidly enforced.

The WICB believes that the building of a successful West Indies team unit is dependent on a set of core elements – as outlined in the recently published Selection Criteria – which players must demonstrate.

Finally the WICB also reiterates once again that possession of a retainer contract is not a pre-requisite for selection to the West Indies team.

Editor’s notes: The WICB has outlined that the West Indies Twenty20 team should be a settled competitive unit by the ICC WT20 2012 in order to develop into a winning West Indies Twenty20 team by 2014 for the ICC World Twenty20 Tournament.

Similarly the WICB has also outlined that the West Indies One Day International team should be a settled competitive unit by ICC Champions Trophy 2013 so as to build towards a winning combination by the 2015 World Cup.

The WICB recognizes that the development of a consistently winning West Indies Test Team will take a longer period and in this regard will have to be reliant on the successes of specific team development programmes and of the West Indies A Team programme and the Sagicor High Performance Center.

WICB Chairman of Selectors Clyde Butts noted:

“We have picked a very good team for the upcoming tournament and I expect them to do very well. We have the nucleus of the team which has been playing together for the last couple of years ... most of the players who have done well at the international level. There is a good balance is squad and we have a lot of allrounders.”

“The players are growing in experience and this series is being seen as part of the ultimate build-up to the next ICC Women’s World Cup. It is a young team, with a number of players in their teens and early 20s, and we are looking to build with the future in mind. Even though it is a young team, the players are quite experienced at the international level and this trip will be a chance to gain more experience in foreign conditions. We have played in South Africa before so the girls should be familiar with the conditions and know how to adapt when they get there.”

“We have two newcomers to the squad – Subrina Munroe and Pearl Etienne. The two new players are both very good seam bowlers and they performed very well in the recent WICB Women’s Tournament in St Vincent. Both can also bat and they can be expected to make good contributions in the lower order. They have been knocking at the door for sometime and have managed to work their way into the team.”

“We have not included Pam Lavine in the squad for this tour. She is still a good batter, and she has done well for Barbados and West Indies in the past. Her general fitness worked against her on this occasion and for this tour we decided to look at some other options. Not making the team for this tour does not mean she has been discarded nor has she been retired. She is still part of the overall plans in West Indies Women’s cricket.”

HORSE RACING

Four Individuals to be honoured at upcoming Horse race meet

In a recent interview on the popular ‘Sports Menu’ program aired each week on Nevis Television channel 8, Board member of the Nevis Turf and Jockey Club, Mr. Emmanuel Jeffers revealed that the club will be hosting an exciting meet on September 16th during which four individuals will be honoured.

Jeffers noted that it was not by accident that the meet has been scheduled on National Heroes day, because the individuals to be honoured in his opinion are pioneers in the sport of Horse Racing and effectively heroes in their own right.

The four persons to be honoured are: Mr. Arthur Evelyn—former Horse racing Administrator and Jockey; Mr. Ira Dore—former Administrator and horse owner. He is actually credited for bringing the first thoroughbred to Nevis; Colin Claxton-Administrator and track official for many years and another hard working official better known as ‘Sharp’. According to Jeffers, all four persons have contributed significantly to the success o the sport on the island.

The gate will officially opened at 1.00pm and the first race is expected to bolt off at 2.30 pm. For the first four races, one of the honourees will present the winner’s trophy immediately after each race is completed and then the crowd will be entertained by a group of local modelers and the Small Axe band.

The final race, as has been the case for the last few years, will be referred to as the Don Bartlette Memorial Classic, in honour of the late stalwart at the Indian Castle race track. However, prior to the start of the final race, a brief official ceremony will be held during which the honourees will be presented with plaques and showered with praises.

Even though it will be an action filled afternoon, Jeffers indicated that the entrance fee will remain at the same $20.00 for adults and $10.00 for children.

The Small Axe band is expected to provide entertainment up until about 10 pm-- well after the final race is concluded.

ATHLETICS

Top athlete focuses on Criminal Justice

Top Nevisian long distance runner, Shirvon Greene indicated in a recent interview that he is into the final phase of completing his Masters degree in Criminal Justice. Greene, who has expressed his appreciation at gaining a scholarship because of his athletic ability, has already completed a Bachelor’s degree in Accounting and was home on a short break.

In recent times he was unable to honour an ongoing contract with his track club in the USA due to ankle and knee problems. He however revealed that he has already commenced early pre season training and will be back on the track from September 3rd and will continue to honour his contract to its completion into next year.

On his return to the USA the first order of business for the athlete is to decide on one of two Washington based Universities which are showing an interest in having him as part of their track team. “I will decide based on the one which offers the best opportunities”, he noted.

He was quick to point out that his ultimate goal is to qualify for the next Olympics.
Greene also left a message for the young people of Nevis: “Try your best—practise, practise, practise…..You do not have to get involved in drugs and violence. There are lots of sports to get involved in and there are a lot of scholarship opportunities out there---do your best and you will make it”.

The young athlete who was home from studies in the USA on a short vacation stated that he had received numerous queries as regards the regular Basketball, league held in Craddock Road.

He however stated that there will be no such tournament this year, as a major one is being planned for next year when he returns from his studies.

The proposed plan is for the league to involve teams from St.Kitts and Nevis and matches will be shared at the various Basketball venues on the island e.g. Church Ground, Cotton Ground, Old Manor, Brown Hill and home court, Craddock Road.
The league will be named in honour of the late sports enthusiast Benny Hodge and is expected to have several sponsors with one of the major ones being Carib Brewery, Hodge’s former Employer.

Nevis team to be announced today

The Nevis cricket squad to participate in the first match of the Leeward Islands cricket tournament for 2010 will be announced sometime this afternoon.

Word of this has come from President of the Nevis Cricket Association, Mr. Ronald Powell. Powell who returned to the island yesterday noted that the team has been selected and ratified by his Association but he will meet with the Nevis cricket squad which is currently in training, this afternoon and indicate to the team members which players will be going to Anguilla for the first leg of the tournament. Those players not included in the 13 for Anguilla will all be on stand by for the remaining rounds of matches. Powell noted that he thought that the players should know first hand before the team is publicized via the media.

He also thanked Vice President Cartwright Farrell and other members of his Association who had already put certain things in place in his absence, especially as regards the flight arrangements for the squad.

The names of the players and officials headed for Anguilla for this weekend’s match will be publicized after the cricketers have been notified.

Hughes plays amazing knock as Derbyshire record historic win
Windiescricket.com

Chesney Hughes played a superb innings for Derbyshire to help them record an amazing come-from-behind victory in their English County Cricket match against Gloucestershire on Wednesday. For Derbyshire it was one of the most astonishing wins in history as they recovered from being bowled out for just 44 in their first innings to beat Gloucestershire by 54 runs.

Hughes, the 19-year-old from the tiny island of Anguilla, was the key man. The strongly-built six-footer who was playing in just his 11th first-class match carved out a heroic 96 not out – off 156 balls with 13 boundaries and a six -- on a difficult pitch for the batsmen. It was more than double the next best score in the match and guided Derbyshire to 236 all out in the second innings. That set Gloucestershire 125 to win but some ill-disciplined batting saw them crash to 70 all out and a stunning defeat inside two days.

Tim Groenewald was the pick of the visiting bowlers today with 4-22, while new-ball partner Graham Wagg claimed 3-31. The home side’s batsmen contributed to their own downfall, however, with Hamish Marshall’s 44 and 11 from last-man Anthony Ireland the only scores in double figure. Derbyshire took 19 points from their astonishing comeback – their first win since April, while Gloucestershire’s three-point haul could well signal the end of their promotion hopes.

Elsewhere on the circuit, Windies batting stalwart Shiv Chanderpaul made 38 as Lancashire dominated Hampshire at Liverpool. Hampshire made 160 on the first day and Lances rattled up 398 and the visitors closed the second day on 15-0.

The 36-year-old left-hander laid the foundation facing 140 balls in three hours at the crease before he was run out. The batting star for Lancashire was Kyle Hogg, the grandson of Trinidad and Tobago and West Indies great Sonny Ramadhin, who made a blazing 81 in two hours to add to the four wickets he took in Hampshire’s first innings.

De Villiers displaces Dhoni as No. 1 ODI batsman
Cricinfo staff

South African batsman AB de Villiers has displaced India's captain MS Dhoni as the top ODI batsman according to the latest ICC ratings. De Villiers, who averages 43.56 in 101 ODIs, had a prolific season that took him to 805 points in the ratings, nine clear of Dhoni. Michael Hussey, the Australian batsman, was third on the list with 792 points.

De Villiers amassed 667 runs in his last 10 ODIs, which included four centuries and two fifties against top opposition. Three of those centuries came in consecutive games, in Gwalior, Ahmedabad and Antigua. Though de Villiers did not play in August, Dhoni's patchy form in the Sri Lanka triangular series, where he scored only 140 runs in five outings, led to the swap at the top.

"My ultimate aim is always to do well for the team and to help South Africa win trophies but it is nice to be acknowledged in this way," de Villiers said. "Two years ago I said I wanted to be the best batsman in the world and it is pleasing to see that I am starting to get results." He is also keen to move up from his No. 11 position in the Test ratings.
De Villiers had ankle surgery during the off-season and was to continue his rehabilitation during a conditioning camp with the senior team. "It [the ankle] is coming on nicely and I can't wait to pick up my cricket bat again."

Sri Lanka captain Kumar Sangakkara was at the top of the Test batting table with 874 points, 15 ahead of Virender Sehwag. Dale Steyn and Daniel Vettori maintained their respective positions at the head of the Test and ODI bowling charts, while Jacques Kallis and Shahid Afridi remained the top allrounders in the two formats.

CYCLING

Nevis’ Top Cyclist receives top of the line bike

Top Cyclist and Triathlete on Nevis, Reggie Douglas, yesterday received a brand new, top of the line bicycle which was officially handed over to him by the Minster of Sports on Nevis, the Hon. Hensley Daniel.

The presentation was made during a brief ceremony held on the premises of the Administration Building in downtown Charlestown.

The ceremony was chaired by Mr. Allister Yearwood, Advisor in the Ministry of Tourism who lauded Douglas for his many achievements throughout the years and informed the gathering that there were three contributors towards the acquiring of the bike: The Ministry of Social Development as the major contributor, ably supported by the returning Nationals of Nevis Society and FLY Biotech of Kansas in the USA. He referred to Douglas as the King of Cycling in Nevis and the OECS. He also applauded him for his work with the youngsters, some of whom are already making names for themselves.

Minster Daniel saluted Douglas on his achievements locally, regionally and internationally and hoped that the donation of the bike would be ‘a small step to even greater things”. He also alluded to the recent breaking news that Nevis will be hosting a major international Triathlon event in March next year and noted that the sport of Cycling and Triathlon on the island was going places. In handing over the bike to Douglas he also paid tribute to the other two donors, the returning nationals of Nevis and Fly Biotech of the USA.

Reggie Douglas was gracious in the receipt of the bike and thanked all the persons who had made it possible. He however extended special thanks to Minister Daniel and the Ministry of Social Development for their significant contribution.

He also noted that the Road bike –carbon fiber; Crek Madone 6.9 model, was tailor- made for him personally. He further explained that on a previous trip to Arizona he had done a bike fit test which included lactic acid tests and the resulting statistics were used by him as he communicated with the manufacturers via the internet, in order to design the bike to suit his personal levels of output in various areas.

He indicated that he had tried out the bike in two recent meets placing ninth in Anguilla and first in the St.Kitts –Nevis Independence trials. He was extremely pleased with its performance and hoped to use it in future events to bring glory to Nevis. His upcoming events include participation in the World cycling championships in Australia on September 22nd along with James Weekes and the Caribbean Cycling championships in Guadeloupe.
Mr. Greg Phillip the President of the Nevis Triathlon Club also gave remarks and expressed gratitude for the donation as he explained that with such a quality bike, Reggie would not be at a disadvantage when he competed against other cyclists on the international stage.

He however made a clarion call for more support from the private sector and noted that that support did not have to be only financial in nature but also that business entities for example the Tourism Authority could use star athletes like Reggie Douglas and James Weekes to promote the Tourism product as they drew quite some attention to themselves when they competed overseas.

Also in attendance at the ceremony was Abdul Kareem Ahmed, Director of the Project Management and Training Unit, along with members of his staff.

When questioned about the cost of the bike, Mr. Ahmed was tight lipped, only to
venture that ‘it costs a pretty penny’.

TriStar111 Nevis on 2 April 2011

Brand new overseas destination announced for the internationally successful and growing TriStar Series
30 AUG 2010, Monte Carlo, Monaco

TriStar111 Nevis will be the climax of a week full of fun and sports on the Caribbean Island of Nevis. The Race Week will feature a StarMile swimming event as well as a TriStar11.1 race for beginners. TriStar111 Nevis is the first of a number of new TriStar event destinations to be announced for 2011.

The first of a series of new events to be announced for 2011 is TriStar111 Nevis. 1km of swimming, 100km of cycling and 10km of running will take place on 2 April 2011 on the island in the Caribbean Sea. Charlestown, the island’s capital, will be the start and finishing point of the internationally successful triathlon format.

“TriStar111 Nevis with its connected team and family member events will bring a huge boost in terms of sports tourism to the island of Nevis”, says Winston Crooke, President of the St Kitts & Nevis Triathlon Federation that will act as partner for Star Production SARL in producing the event. The event is strongly supported by the Nevis Island Administration, in particular the Sports Ministry, as the triathlon falls in line with their sport development programs.

TriStar111 Nevis will replace the popular annual regional triathlon that was held during the month of March. Top local cyclist and Triathlete Reggie Douglas supports the new Caribbean TriStar race conjointly organized by Winston Crooke, Philippe Dutilleul, and Star Production SARL.

The event week will be opened with the first ever StarMile swimming event world-wide. The former Nevis to St. Kitts Cross Channel Swim over 2,5 miles will be relabelled “StarMile 2.5 Nevis” and kick off a week of fun, social responsibility and environmental protection on the island. Regional Crciket tournament second phase aborted

Chief coordinator of the Government of St.Kitts and Nevis 13 and under regional cricket tournament, Vernon Springer, yesterday informed that the second phase of the tournament which would have included a series of 10/10 matches between the teams, have been officially cancelled.

Springer spoke even as he was busily arranging flights for the overseas teams to get home from the RL Bradshaw Int Airport, ahead of the oncoming storm Fiona. The young cricketers would have experienced first hand the passage of Hurricane Earl and with more bad weather predicted, Springer noted that the decision to abort the tournament was unavoidable.

He also indicated that the prestigious Warner Park test venue had received some degree of damage due to the passage of Hurricane Earl.

Springer however indicated that in the not too distant future he will be releasing the final overall statistics on the tournament and a contingent of officials will shortly travel to Nevis to make well deserved presentations to members of the second placed Nevis team.

WICB offers Central Retainer and Developmental contracts

St John’s Antigua – The WICB, on Friday August 27, offered Central Retainer Contracts for the period October 1, 2010 to September 30, 2011 to the following players:

1. Chris Gayle
2. Shivnarine Chanderpaul
3. Sulieman Benn
4. Dwayne Bravo
5. Darren Sammy
6. Kemar Roach
7. Brendan Nash
8. Adrian Barath
9. Darren Bravo
10. Shane Shillingford
11. Kieron Pollard
12. Nikita Miller
13. Devon Smith
14. Ravi Rampaul
15. Nelon Pascal

The WICB also offered Developmental Contracts to the following players:

1. Kirk Edwards
2. Andre Russell
3. David Bernard Jr.
4. Gavin Tonge
5. Andre Fletcher
6. Chadwick Walton
7. Devendra Bishoo
8. Assad Fudadin
9. Imran Khan
10. Kevin Stoute

The players have been given until September 10 to peruse the offers and indicate to the WICB whether they will accept. The WICB has also indicated that should, by that date, any player not convey a decision to the WICB or indicate that they would prefer not to take up the offer the WICB will make alternative offers.

Big hitting Kieron Pollard who has performed exceedingly well in the shortest form of the game has been offered a Central Retainer Contract for the first time. Also making their debut on the list of Central Retainer Contracts is the Trinidadian pair of Adrian Barath and Darren Bravo, Dominican off spinner Shane Shillingford, Jamaican left arm spinner Nikita Miller and Grenadian pacer Nelon Pascal.

Barath, Bravo, Miller and Pascal have been moved up to Central Retainer Contract offers from Developmental Contracts for the past year.

Devon Smith, the Grenadian opener, who performed well for the West Indies A Team, has also been offered a Central Retainer Contract after holding a Developmental Contract for the year October 1, 2009 to September 30, 2010.

Of the 14 players who are on Central Retainer Contracts for the period October 1, 2009 to September 30, 2010, six – Ramnaresh Sarwan, Denesh Ramdin, Jerome Taylor, Narsingh Deonarine, Dave Bernard and Travis Dowlin – have slipped off the list of those offered Central Retainer Contracts for the upcoming year.

Bernard has been offered a Developmental Contract while Sarwan and Taylor’s limited availability for the West Indies over the past year due to injuries weighed heavily against them. Sarwan and Deonarine’s general levels of fitness were also deemed unsatisfactory.

Ramdin and Dowlin’s performances over the past year have been less than favourable in the view of the Selection Committee and they were not recommended for Central Retainer or Developmental contracts.

The WICB reiterates that being on Central Retainer or Developmental contracts is not a pre-requisite for being selected to represent the West Indies.

Nevis whips St.kitts in under 13 tourney

Nevis dished out a comprehensive whipping to their Kittitian counterparts on Friday 27th August at Warner Park as the sixth round of matches in the regional under 13 cricket tournament continued.

St.Kitts won the toss and after electing to bat first, could only mange 86 all out in 23. 4 overs. Hakeem Harvey was again the main wicket taker for Nevis but he was well supported by the other bowlers.

When Nevis batted they seemed on course to overtake the victory target for no loss, with Saeed Williams and Ross Powell apparently well anchored but Williams gifted his hand just short of a deserved half century and Colin Archibald perished in a mix up with Ross Powell and went via the run out route.

An emphatic pull shot backward of square by Powell, effectively sealed the issue for the Nevis team. Interestingly, there was a very good crowd on hand which comprised mainly of Nevisians who had taken time out from their regular schedules in order to support the team.

Players were told not to meet Majeed brothers
Cricinfo

The Pakistan team was warned about meeting Mazhar and Azhar Majeed by the team management at the start of their tour to England. One of the brothers, Mazhar, was arrested last night by Scotland Yard on suspicion of a conspiracy to defraud bookmakers, after being caught on video by the News of the World (NOTW) offering to bribe Pakistan's bowlers to bowl no-balls on demand during the Lord's Test.

The brothers are agents who represent a number of Pakistan's players in the UK, helping them secure sponsorships for cricket equipment among other things.

"When we started this tour, I told the players they should not be entertaining these two in their hotel rooms," Yawar Saeed, the team manager, told Cricinfo. "These boys are their agents and, anywhere we tour in the world, we tell our players that they are not allowed to have agents in their hotel rooms. It is the policy on the tour."

The team management had warned players as soon as they landed in London against meeting these two brothers because of suspicions about some of their activities, Pakistan's leading Urdu paper Jang had reported on July 27. The reporter, Abdul Majid Bhatti, said he received calls from men claiming to represent the brothers soon after the story appeared, threatening legal action.

NOTW claimed that seven Pakistan players were involved, though only four have been named so far. Saeed confirmed to Cricinfo that "one or two were questioned by Scotland Yard," last night soon after the story broke. He dismissed reports that the passports of several players had been taken away, saying that all passports were in the possession of the team management.

"Scotland Yard are now investigating and we will assist them in whatever way they may need," Saeed said. "I cannot say anything more right now."

Young Cricketers receive moral boost

The Nevis 13 and under cricket team, received two outstanding pep talks yesterday at the Elquemedo Willet Park pavilion which should set them on their way to continue their winning ways in the ongoing 12th annual regional 13 and under tournament.

Firstly they were addressed by no less a person than the Hon Carlyse Powell who outside of the fact that he is a Minister of Government, is also a former Cricket Administrator which includes being President of the Nevis and Leeward Islands cricket Boards, a WICB representative and Manager of various teams which includes Nevis and Leeward Islands teams.

He drew on his vast experience in analysing the performances of the team as he has watched all of the matches thus far. He lauded them on the areas where they have excelled and pointed out weak areas for immediate improvement. He noted that there were players within the team who would make an all star Nevis under 15 team if one was to be selected from the inception of such tournaments to present. He then gave the general team some guidelines in order to continue their winning ways. One of which was his admonition to ‘listen to your Coaches’. He also singled out individual players for personal advice and when he asked the team about their confidence in winning their remaining matches; he eventually received a resounding ‘yes’.

The Minister was introduced to the gathering which included Coaches Stuart Williams, Carl Tuckett and Ralph Allen, by Kezron Archibald and the vote of thanks was delivered by the diminutive Ross Powell

Shortly after, the young cricketers received a visit from another very important individual in the person of the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Sports, Mr. Alsted Pemberton. He was introduced by the Captain of the team Clydre Smithen and the vote of thanks was delivered by Saeed Williams.

He stressed mainly on aspects of discipline and heartily congratulated the players on their achievement thus far. He warned them not to become complacent and to finish the tournament on a winning note.

The Nevis team now goes to St.Kitts today where they will engage their Federation brothers at Warner Park and then will prepare for what is anticipated to be their major test tomorrow Saturday when they engage the champion Barbados team at the Elquemedo Willet Park.

New deal for cricketers in South Africa
Windiescrciket.com

Johannesburg, South Africa: South Africa's professional cricketers have had their futures secured for the next four years on new, improved terms with the signing of a new contract by the SA Cricketers' Association (SACA) with Cricket South Africa (CSA) and the six Franchises. The new contract guarantees that approximately 20 percent of the income generated by CSA will be passed on to the players. The agreement, or Memorandum of Understanding (MOU), was signed on Friday 20, August 2010 in Johannesburg.

"The MOU is a comprehensive document which regulates a host of issues relating not only to the Proteas but every professional cricketer in the country," said SACA chief executive, Tony Irish. "Apart from money it regulates player contract numbers, player commercial programmes, match scheduling guidelines, conditions on which players are released to IPL and county cricket and player representation on various cricket committees. SACA is all about ensuring that players are proper stakeholders in professional cricket and that they have a voice on issues that affect them on and off the field.

Irish added: "The MOU ensures that out of every R100 made by Cricket South Africa approximately R20 goes to the players. The players are effectively shareholders in the game, not just players on the field, so it's in their interests to have an eye on the big picture and not only on runs and wickets."

"Players have felt in the past that they don't have a 'voice' in the decision-making processes which affect their lives but that is no longer the case," said SACA President Boeta Dippenaar. "The players know the game and many of us have been playing it for a long time. It's important that our views are heard and count on the various cricket committees and working groups where SACA acts as our voice and works with CSA and Franchises."
