I don’t know if you realize this yet, but I love award show season! Every year around this time you can expect to find my talking about and drooling over photos of fashions worn to the big American award ceremonies for music, movies and television shows. Admittedly, my thirst for fashion tends to lean mostly to what the women wear to these shows. Not that I have anything against the men, and yes some of them do go the extra mile to look superbly debonair and stylish. But seriously how different can you make a tux and tie? So new innovations in evening wear and bold or fresh selections are found on the famous women who arrive and walk the red carpets. And though it is true that most of the gowns and dresses we see worn on the red carpet were already displayed on runways around the world, the truth is that these creations don’t truly have their true effect until they are seen worn by someone in “real-life” (well as real as a star studded night on a red carpet can get). It’s because of this that these red carpet arrivals can pretty much be called the ultimate cat-walk and like every fashion show I have every witnessed I had my favourites and not so favourites.

Diann Agron

I’m still on the fence about a red dress worn on the red carpet. In my mind one would want to not blend in with the flooring at an event such as this. However, the more I see ladies pulling off red numbers such as this one I am more inclined to selecting this colour. Especially this dynamic dress of laser cut frills. The bodice especially brought the term “fire and lace” to mind, this dress by Giles Deacon, screamed steamy romance.

Angelina Jolie

Dressed elegantly in a sleek and sophisticated Versace dress, the starlet was to me the epitome of how one should dress for this award show. After I saw what she wore everyone else, in my mind, pretty much was to be judged off of Miss Jolie’s standard. The classic Hollywood looking ivory dress featured a one shouldered slash or red, which Angie teamed with deep red lips and clutch purse. Finishing her look with a sophisticated up-do was also to be commended. As a wild loose hair do or even a ponytail would have take too much away from the elegance of this Versace creation.

Madonna

Since the show I have heard and read a few critics being, well, critical of the songstress’ choice of dress. But I disagree totally. Yes, it was sort of oddball; with its haphazardly organized pleats and ruffles. Yes, it was quite contradictory, being glitzy and being worn with a single leather biker’s glove. But this is Madonna we are talking about. Her legacy will be her ability to always take something we would never wear and still pull it off. When you step back from this dress and factor in that she has to always stay ahead of and be different from what everyone else is wearing, this becomes a very awesome outfit. It doesn’t matter that you would never wear it; I mean who would wear a metal cone bra?

Evan Rachel Wood

If I had to pick my least favourite it would have to be this dress by Gucci Premier. Not because it was necessarily a bad design. In fact in many ways this dress was quite stunning. I loved the colour and shine of the feathers and the elegant silhouette and halter. But the decision to have most of the feathers missing in the front hip area really wasn’t good. It, in all honesty, looked like an exotic and beautiful bird suffering with a bad case of mange. I more wanted to apply ointment to it than to ever wear it myself.
