Douglas Prostitutes

Recently the practice of prostitution was brought forcibly to our public’s attention by an outcry from a female civil servant that the traffic is being carried on at Independence Square. In her passionate rail against the alleged practice, she is said to have lamented that the choice of venue was an insult to our slave ancestors who were sold by public auction on this very site.

I am not sure what was more bothering to the complainer, the choice of venue or the trade itself, but a number of commentators had various things to say about the allegation that our young women were selling their bodies to make a living. Naturally, there were the usual scornful and derisive remarks.

Like almost everywhere else in the world, there is a general lack of tolerance for prostitutes. We call them all kinds of names: whores, harlots, bus kites, and we use all kinds of adjectives to describe them: dirty, nasty, wutless and so on.

Females who have husbands are particularly vicious in their umbrage against these unfortunate women, who find themselves with nobody to look to for sustenance and have to rely on the patronage of men on the loose. Other females with no husbands, but good jobs from which to support them, look obliquely at their sisters and cousins who earn the minimum or no wage at all and who have fatherless children to feed, clothe and educate.

I believe there were many prostitutes in the time of Christ, the founder of the Christian faith. Palestine was then under Roman occupation and the economy was weak. A weak economy with foreign soldiers was good ground for whoremongers and a good arena for unfortunate Jewish and Samaritan women looking for a "raise" with which to buy bread and other necessities.

The situation was similar to my growing-up days in Basseterre, during the war. The sailors came ashore to the eagerly waiting arms of women who hoped to earn a couple of dollars to pay the rent and buy some food. The Mighty Sparrow painted a musical picture of the situation in Trinidad in one of his early songs:

Jean and Dinah, Rosita and Clementina,

Roun de corner posin

Bet you life is sumting they sellin……

And just as it is now, so it was then. There were people who condemned the practice and tried to tempt Jesus Christ into joining them in their spurious efforts to challenge the Roman law. They brought before him a woman caught having illicit sex. According to the Law of Moses, she should have been stoned to death but Jesus challenged their hypocrisy and refused to condemn the woman.

Jesus Christ had many encounters with prostitutes. One time he got into some small talk with a Samaritan woman at a well. The outcome was her declaration of faith in him and his ministry. Another one loved him so much that she lavished a jar of expensive ointment on him and washed his feet with her tears.

I believe that, if Jesus walked the earth today, his attitude to prostitutes would differ diametrically from that of some of the pillars of our society. He would have it the other way around. He would have compassion on the unfortunate women and predict woes on the classy hypocrites whom he described as white sepulchers and wolves in sheep’s clothing.

I believe that he would roundly rebuke the flagrant prostitution which typifies the method of government of Denzil Llewellyn Douglas.

Dr. Denzil Douglas is a pimp, a special kind of pimp, one whose modus operandi is not vaginas, but spirits and souls. He runs a massive operation in human traffic. He uses his overflowing treasure chest, to buy people, high and low people, whom he uses to buttress his vile regime.

He is the political version of what the Bible calls a whoremonger, who the Bible declares is so powerful and over-reaching that only God alone can judge him. Doctor Douglas buys people, keeps them under subjection and forces them to do his will whether it is good or bad. It is nearly always bad. He uses his huge treasure chest to woo young men and women into his snare. With the cunning of the spider, he invites the vulnerable and the unwary to walk into his parlor expecting pleasure, and in this way, he drafts young professionals into his political harem. He knows that they are broke and he has the knack of figuring out who are the greedy ones who want to make hay before the sun shines.

These young professionals, who are in a hurry to pay off their student loans, build big houses, drive fancy vehicles, live abundantly, and spend big at the night joints, do what prostitutes do. They sell themselves. They join the Douglas Mafia and offer their talents to further his evil cause.

Those of us who witnessed the parliamentary travesty a few months ago and saw how young Lawyer Jason Hamilton allowed himself to be used to subvert good governance, would understand why the Apostle Paul declared that the love of money is the root of ALL evil. We would perhaps never know what else he was promised besides the post of Attorney-General, but whatever it was, the loot was sufficient to induce Mr. Hamilton to bend himself out of moral shape for Dr. Douglas.

It is not only young men and women on the threshold of their career that Dr. Douglas traps with his political whore mongering. Older men and women, seasoned veterans, who have served and earned their retirement, but are greedy for more; regular church goers and office holders in the congregations, succumb to his invitation to become a part of his harem. And then they degenerate into a level of depravity where they see wrong and call it right. For, as St Paul said, in their lust after money , they err from the faith and pierce themselves through with many sorrows.

Is it not difficult to imagine how senior Civil Servants, senior in their ages to Dr Douglas, could in good conscience support his decision to sell our limited land resources to foreigners ,thereby disinheriting the generations to come? I believe they understand the logic and share some of the passion of those who oppose the extravagant stupidity and incomprehensible incompetence of their Prime Minister; but like the craven prostitutes who work in the night , they crave the money.

Very poor people are also ensnared by his well laid traps. He uses their poverty against them. Crazed by the daunting task of paying enormous prices for food, and the huge electricity bills their sense of outrage against Denzil Douglas has been numbed, to the point where they are unresponsive to the humiliations and insults with which the Prime Minister studiously litters their paths. Dora gets no support from the father of her two children. She voted for the Douglas Party in 2004 and remained out of work until 2009 when the YES program employed her for a few months. Since the YES closed in 2010 she was unemployed again till the PEP Program was launched. She works in a bar for 8 hours a day at $300 per week. She is full of complaints against her exploitation but she is programmed to vote for Douglas. She is hooked.

This broad cross-section of our society, the indigent, the insecure and the college trained, are corralled into a vortex that does the same thing to them that commercial sex does to the unhappy sex workers. It reduces the human experience to that of the lower animals in a zoo where even great beasts are rendered inert by their entrapment.

In kinder, gentler language, Douglas runs a slave plantation complete with his hierarchy of overseers, house slaves, and field slaves. On a slave plantation, human beings are demoralized by the depravity of the environment. One man, the Massa, is supreme, the maximum ruler, and the rest are debased by unquestioning loyalty to him. They adore him, sing his praises, idolize him and prostitute themselves to him, surrendering their spirits, souls and bodies to his orgies.

It took the Honorable Ghost Phillip some time to find out that, having accepted Beelzebub’s largesse, he must be ready to pay the price whenever Mephistopheles calls. There is no questioning of the demands of Beelzebub, who exacts the most demeaning postures from those who hold out their hands for his gifts. The recent media "sensation" Austin Edinborough will soon learn, as the Honorable Ghost has learned, that the yoke of the pimp is not easy and that his burden is not light. Soon he will discover that it would have been better for him to face the wrath of his creditors than to fall into the snare of Dr. Douglas.

And the time is coming soon when those who defy Dr. Denzil Douglas, and worship at his shrine, will answer the question. "What shall it profit a man to gain the whole world and lose his own soul?"
