The Federation’s legal fraternity joins family and friends as to mourn the passing of a native prominent lawyer Dr. Joseph S. Archibald, QC.

Dr. Archibald QC passed away on Thursday night (Apr. 3) in McNamara, Road Town, Tortola, where he resided and practiced his profession.

The Queen’s Counsel began his career when he was called to the Bar in 1960 in St. Kitts and Nevis. He then left to practice law in the British Virgin Islands and founded J S Archibald and Co.

Following his appointment to the Bar, he wore many hats in the legal system, serving in Magistrate's Court, Appellate Court, and on the Judicial Committee of the Privy Council in England.

His areas of concentration were Civil Litigation, Criminal Litigation, Commercial Law, Constitutional Law (Including Public law and Administrative Law), Commercial and Business   

Law, International Arbitration, Banking, Property, Insolvency, and Trusts.

QC Archibald has also served in several capacities in the region. He was one of the first presidents of the BVI Bar Association (1986-1994); and was founding president of the OECS Bar Association (1991-1996). As president of the OECS Bar he advanced the rules and guidelines of behaviour and ethical practices for barristers and solicitors who were admitted to practice at the Eastern Caribbean Supreme Court. In 2010, he was reappointed as a Member of the CARICOM Regional Judicial and Legal Services Commission.

During his tenure in the BVI, he also served as the High Court Magistrate, Registrar, Senior Crown Counsel, Director of Public Prosecutions, Attorney General, President of the Civil Service Association, and as a member of the Executive and Legislative Councils.

He leaves to mourn his wife, V. Inez Archibald, who is the present Deputy Governor of the British Virgin Islands; his loving children, and numerous other relatives and friends
