The polls predicted it and yesterday those predictions were proven accurate as the Antigua Barbuda Labour Party (ABLP) defeated the former ruling United Progressive Party (UPP) in a landslide victory. ABLP won 14 of the 17 seats [subject to official results of the ABEC] in the June 12 general election. Several UPP government Ministers lost their seats, including veteran MP Harold Lovell; some lost to new candidates. Prime Minister-elect Gaston Browne has declared today, Friday a public holiday. UPP leader and former PM Baldwin Spencer said the results were a surprise to him but he had to accept the people’s verdict. “I wish the new government well…What is important now is for us to come together as a nation,’the two-term former PM said in conceding defeat.
