A young Newtown man has been charged with the stabbing death of 19-year-old Collin Merchant. Police announced today (July 16) that 29-year-old Alston “Chocolate”Francis, originally from Newtown but resides at Taylor’s Housing and New Road Housing Project, was charged with the Upper Monkey Hill youth’s murder. The incident occurred at the Frigate Bay Strip on July 7th at about 2:45 am . Reports are that police were summoned to Vibes Bar and found Merchant dead on the establishment’s floor. An autopsy said the young man died from a knife wound to the chest. The bar’s surveillance video and eye witness testimony may have led to his arrest, sources reveal. The stabbing took place when the bar was filled with patrons. Francis, a popular individual especially on the football and catamaran cruise scene, was arrested last week however he was only charged with murder yesterday (July 15). Family and friends expressed shock and disappointment upon hearing of Francis’ arrest and subsequent charge. Many described him as “friendly and outgoing”and a “free spirit who loved to have fun”.
