Lodge Project resident Andrew “Cheeko”Wilson has been arrested and charged for the arson which destroyed the Venezuelan Embassy on St. Kitts. The 37-year old, who resides in Phillips’ Village, was arrested on 2 warrants in the first instance of Arson and Malicious Damage earlier this week. He was charged on Wednesday (Jan 22). Police have not revealed any information pertaining to motive for the arson. The Embassy, located at Wigley Avenue, Fortlands, was completely gutted in the early hours of January 5 th . Fire officers spent hours trying to extinguish the blaze; the partially wooden building was engulfed in flames when they arrived on the scene. The Venezuelan Embassy was the second building hit by arsonist(s) that night. A few hours earlier Fire and Rescue responded to a fire at the OAS Secretariat, a few hundred feet away from the Embassy. That fire was quickly contained and the building suffered minor damages. Officials ruled it arson. It was not until a few days after the Embassy fire that authorities deemed that too had been deliberately set. Two persons were taken into police custody for questioning the day of the fires but were released a few days later without charge. The fires inflamed an already tense situation among the ruling political party and opposition movement as both sides sought to cast blame on the other for torching the two foreign institutes.
