Isoursop down as reserve Veteran performers Singing Jackie and Astro lead the group of eight calypsonians who will compete for the Senior Calypso Monarch 2013/2014. Sixteen calypsonians went head to head last night (Dec 15) at the semifinals held at Port Zante. Each calypsonian rendered two songs for the competition and for most it was the first time fans were hearing their ‘second’ song. The artistes were judged on lyrics (word craft, lyrics, creativity) – 40 points; music (melody, arrangement, originality) – 30; and performance (rendition, presentation, demonstration) – 30 points. After all 32 performances Carnival Chairman Sylvester Anthony announced the final eight. Normally seven would be selected however reigning King Konris will not be contesting the crown this year. Topping the list was Singing Jackie with 626points followed closely by Astro with 625. Socrates rounded out the top three with 613 points, then Ritchie Buntin with 597, Rudder with 594, Lady Diva with 592, and Alamoulou and Lord Kut both with 577 points. Isoursop, who was at the bottom of the pack coming out of eliminations last weekend, is down as the reserve with 571 points. The Senior Calypso Monarch competition takes place December 28 at the Sugar Mill, Warner Park Cricket Stadium.
