St. Kitts-Nevis Prime Minister Hon. Dr. Denzil Douglas says the Federation is standing firm and strong and leading the region in economic growth. “In these so-called perilous times St. Kitts-Nevis is standing firm and standing strong and standing tall,”he said on Tuesday. Dr. Douglas boasted of St. Kitts-Nevis having the highest projected growth rate in the OECS of 1.9%. “St. Kitts-Nevis is now leading the Eastern Caribbean in terms of economic growth, we are leading in terms of manufacturing exports and we are leading the OECS in terms of GDP per capita.”He said it was important for the people to have a realistic sense of how the country was doing as a people. He pointed out that where economic growth is concerned the IMF had expressed confidence in St. Kitts-Nevis relative to its regional neighbors. Investor confidence, he said, was also high as was evidence by the many real estate developments that were recently launched. “This can-do attitude coupled with sound financial management insights have certainly worked in our favor. It has not insulated us completely from the trials that everyone else is experiencing but it has resulted in impartial and respected financial institutions expressing the confidence in St. Kitts and Nevis compared to all other nations in the Eastern Caribbean where economic growth is concerned.”Dr. Douglas attributed the increased economic growth in part to sound economic management. He said even while the country must remain alert to the global realities, they people must not become daunted by them. “Instead we must focus on what we are trying to accomplish in our own country and forge ahead regardless of external developments,”he said. “When one compares the dollar value of the goods and services produced by St. Kitts-Nevis relative to our population we are once again in the lead vis a vis the rest of the Eastern Caribbean. I am referring to our Gross Domestic product (GDP) per capita,”he said. PM Douglas said his Cabinet remains focused on producing positive results for the Federation and the people must not allow the gains made to be thrown away by those who wished to say otherwise. He reminded that they had a lot to be thankful for should not take things for granted.
