(Charlestown, Nevis)-” There’s never a shortage of debate about the ups and downs of education. Political leaders, civic leaders and educators constantly discuss how important schools are and what is needed to make the system better. What is sometimes left out of the discussion is input from the people who are its focus: the students. Five students attending school on Nevis, ages 15-17, recently shared their thoughts on the importance of education and how it can be improved. Here’s what they had to say: Observer Q : What do you like best about school? Respondent 1: I like that I don’t have to stay home.” I get to meet new people and (have) a great learning experience. Observer Q:” How important do you think education is? Respondent 1: It is very important. Observer Q: What do you think is needed to improve the education system? Respondent 1: I think they need more stuff for the boys. Observer Q: Do you have any other suggestion that should be done? Respondent 1: No, I don’t have any other ideas. — Observer Q: What do you like best about school? Respondent 2: I like classes and getting to meet new people Observer Q:” How important do you think education is and why? Respondent 2: Yes, I think it is important because it helps me to get a good job when I”m finish with school. Observer Q: What do you think is needed to improve the education system? Respondents 2: We need better teachers and classrooms so we could concentrate. Observer Q: Do you want to see new programmes introduced? Like lunch programme? Respondent 2: Well, not for me because I live close to the school so I do go home, but yes they should. — Observer Q : What do you like best about school? Respondent 3: I like the subjects and classes. Observer Q:” How important do you think education is and why? Respondent 3: It is very important because it helps me in life and what I would like to become. Observer Q: What do you think is needed to improve the education system? Respondent 3: They should encourage teachers to keep extra classes. — Observer Q: What do you like best about school? Respondent 4: I like learning new things. Observer Q: How important do you think education is and why? Respondent 4: Education is very important because when I leave school it help me in which ever work field” I am interested in or I can further my education by going to college. Observer Q: What do you think is needed to improve the education system? Respondent 4: I think we need more books and teachers. — Observer Q: What do you like best about school? Respondent 5: I like getting a feel of the different subject Observer Q: How important do you think education is and why? Respondent 5: It is very important because it would be of good use in the future. Observer Q: What do you think is needed to improve the education system? Respondent 5: We need more well trained teachers. Observer Q: Do you have any other suggestion to be done about improving the education system? Respondent 5: I will also like the opening of extra classes.
