Labour/NRP to unveil similar agreement The members of the tri-party opposition alliance Team Unity will today sign a ‘Charlestown Accord’ on the island of Nevis. According to Team Unity the “historic signing”will take place at 9am (Dec 17) at the Red Cross building on Chapel Street. The agreement is expected to solidify commitments to Nevisians under a Team Unity government which have been voiced by its Leader MP Hon. Dr. Timothy Harris. The Team Unity coalition comprises two opposition parties on St. Kitts- PAM and PLP, and the incumbent CCM in Nevis. Dr. Harris will sign the accord as Leader of the Alliance as well as the People’s Labour Party, Premier Vance Amory will sign on behalf of his Concerned Citizens Movement, and MP Hon. Shawn Richards will sign on behalf of the People’s Action Movement. Dr. Harris remained tight-lipped about the specifics of the Accord but said the document would be made available to the public after today’s signing ceremony. “It’s a continuation of the Nevis agenda that was laid out in part in parliament last week,”he told The Observer. In his Budget Address last Wednesday (Dec 10) Dr. Harris highlighted some of the ways Nevis would benefit under a Team Unity government. He vowed to bring an end to the marginalizing and disrespecting of the government and people of Nevis he says has been inflected by the Denzil Douglas-led Labour/NRP federal government over the years. CCM Deputy Leader Hon. Mark Brantley said the Charlestown Accord is a truly historic moment since never before in the Federation’s history have parties ‘so publicly and so transparently demonstrated what their intentions are upon forming the next Federal Government”. “Never before has any St. Kitts-based party or leader made such public commitments to the people of Nevis. Team Unity says that it’s now time for all citizens and residents of St. Kitts and Nevis to benefit- not some, all. Team Unity says it’s time for all of our people to be treated fairly and equitably and be allowed to enjoy the full fruits of their citizenship,”he said. On Tuesday morning (Dec 16) Prime Minister Douglas revealed on his live radio program “Ask the PM’that a “draft agreement formalizing a spirit of cooperation, collaboration and commitment for the national good”between his Labour administration and the Joseph Parry-led Nevis Reformation Party would soon be unveiled. The Agreement will be publicized during a joint concert at Pinney’s Beach in Nevis, and Port Zante in St. Kitts on Thursday (Dec 18). Dr. Douglas said the Agreement had been months in making, however Dr. Harris said the Prime Minister was ‘stealing the progressive ideas of Team Unity yet again”. “Note that their so-called Agreement is coming after Team Unity would have announced the signing of the Charlestown Accord. So they would have heard what was already said publicly when I articulated in the National Assembly how Nevis would be treated as an equal partner in the federal arrangement under a Team Unity government,”he said.
