A customs officer is currently in police custody following the discovery of drugs, gun and ammunition at the Vance Amory International Airport on Thursday afternoon.

The Observer was informed that one gun, 10 rounds of ammunition and three bags of a white powder suspected to be cocaine were found. According to the police they also made a search at the customs officers home in Maddens Village.

Last year Britany Paola Peets was caught trying to smuggle 2.5 Kilos of cocaine through the Vance Amory International Airport. She was convicted and sentenced to a total of four years in prison.

On Tuesday (June 12) a Clay Ghaut man was taken into custody after he was found in possession of a one (1) 9mm Sig Sauer pistol with a number of matching rounds of ammunition. Another person who was present at the time of the search was also taken into Police custody, but was later discharged.

According to a press release the head of the Nevis Task Force, Inspector James Stephen, said that the search conducted on Tuesday was in relation to a “series of robberies that have occurred in Nevis and the recent homicide. He also said that several operations were currently being conducted and that there were more to come.”

“Robust patrols have been stepped up. The Police are also seeking out several persons of interest that have been identified. We want to assure the public that we are doing all that we can to make Nevis a safe and tranquil place to live, work and do business. We are still soliciting the help of the community and any information received will remain anonymous,” Inspector Stephen said.

However as of press time no one has been charged in either instance.
