CULTURAMA KICKS OFF WITH PAIR OF PARTIES
By John Denny Nevis Reporter (Charlestown/Newcastle, Nevis) - Hundreds of revelers showed up for both the Street Bash last Saturday and the Beach Bash on Sunday to mark the beginning of the 2008 Culturama season. Performing Saturday in downtown Charlestown was the band Ultra Sonic.
From a stage set up on the front steps of the Nevis Tourism Authority, Ultra Sonic played a range of music from Bob Marley to dance hall. The acoustics in downtown Charlestown, compliments of so many stone structures, ensured that the full volume was felt for several blocks. As is customary, the party did not really get going until after dark.
Sunday at Sand Crab Hole Beach the smell of barbecue and music filled the air with Odisi performing.
The 10 members of Odisi play a mixture of soca and calypso. Band member Eazi said they are scheduled to perform at six events through Culturama.
"Culturama is very good for us. A lot of people see us perform and the exposure brings more (business,)" he said.
Culturama is celebrated over the Emancipation Day weekend. This year it will run from July 25 to August 5. |
