(Charlestown, Nevis) – They all ran hard and they all played hard, but only one school could take home the trophy and this year, Charlestown Primary School kept the top honor.

Many thousands turned out on April 9 for the Nevis Amateur Athletic Association and the Department of Education Primary Schools Championship.

These “Mini-Olympics,” sponsored by Gulf Insurance through their local agent, A.L. Evelyn Ltd., opened at noon with ceremonies at Grove Park in downtown Charlestown.

The first athletic competition began about 1:45 p.m.

 

Many vendors were on hand selling everything from toys to sugar cane and the air was thick with the smell of barbecue. Once the games began the races were run one after another in an efficient, timely manner.

Fun was had by all.

All eight primary schools competed for the Gulf Insurance Champions Trophy.

 

The overall results were:

Division A:

1st Place – Charlestown Primary School

2nd Place – Gingerland Primary School

3rd Place – St. Thomas Primary School

4th Place – Ivor Walters Primary School

Division B:

1st Place – St. John’s Primary School

2nd Place – St. James Primary School

3rd Place – Violet O.J. Nichols Primary School

4th Place – Maude Cross Prepatory.

Awards were presented immediately after each event with class champions and most outstanding trophies were presented at the end of the meet.

Athletes also competed for selection to the Leeward Islands Youth Championships to be held later this year.

Events for the meet included the 60m, 100m, 200, 400m, 800m, 1500m and the exciting relays 4x100m and 4x400m. Competition was held in 52 events, featuring over 325 athletes in seven classes, from Kindergarten to Grade Six.
