Football returned to its home at Warner Park Stadium last Sunday when the 2007-2008 football league opened with two exciting matches between the nation’s top football clubs.

Lloyd Lazar, permanent secretary in the Ministry of Sports, officially opened the Cable and Wireless Bmobile St. Kitts Kitts-Nevis Football Association (SKNFA) 2007-2008 league. Peter Jenkins, SKNFA president, made a presentation at the event while Minister of Sport and avid football fan Hon. Sam Condor kicked off the first ball. Representatives from all 20 teams participated in the impressive march past displaying their team jerseys and flags.

The first match of evening saw Digicel Rams Village Superstars face off against S. L. Horsfords St. Pauls. Superstars emerged victorious as Jevon Francis (#9) blazed two goals past the opposing team’s goalkeeper in the 55th and 61st minutes of the game that ended 2-0. Imron Ponteen of the 2006-2007 league champions TDC Newtown United scored the only goal of the second match as Newtown defeated UDC Garden Hotspurs 1-0.

The fan turnout impressed SKNFA officials as the newly constructed spectator stand was filled almost to capacity along with the grounds and all other seating areas. Matches for last year’s league were played at various community fields and the finals were played at the Newtown playfield.

The league continues with two more keenly anticipated matches on Sunday: St. Peter’s Calypso Bay Resort Strikers vs. Digicel Rams Village Superstars at 5 p.m. and TDC Newtown United vs S. L. Horsfords St. Pauls.
