Students attend an orientation session.

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts — Parents, students and teachers around the Federation were filled with excitement last week as they entered the classrooms for the first day of the 2018/2019 academic year.

As the Ministry continues to foster the development of the nation’s youth, this year is poised to be a year of excellence. Last week, teachers were engaged in a professional learning environment, while strengthening their classroom delivery techniques and leadership skills at Teachers’ Summer Training Workshops.

The annual workshop is a strong foundation to begin to prepare for the academic year ahead and is lauded for its efficiency and productiveness. It was a festive morning at the Verchilds High School as teachers lined up along the corridors and greeted parents and students with warm hugs and courteous smiles. Most of the students looked eager and ready to return to the classrooms and reunite with their peers.

The Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Education, Hon. Shawn Richards visited the school to issue congratulatory remarks to the students and staff, having attained the best results for the 2018 sitting of the Caribbean Secondary Examinations Certificate, in St. Kitts. He also urged the students to show commitment to their school by becoming actively involved, so they could build a school they can be proud to be a part of.

“Students, you are here to receive an education, for no other purpose but to receive an education,” he continued, “come to school, dress appropriately, listen to the teachers and do your best,” advised Minister Richards.

Lonzo Wilkinson and Ms. Eisha Williams were promoted to principal and deputy principal respectively and come with a wealth of experience. Former principal, Roger Woodley has been promoted to the post of Education Officer in the Ministry of Education and will now be located to the Stanford Building.

He bade farewell to the students at the morning’s assembly. Wishing them and the staff where he served for over 25 years the very best in all their future endeavours.
