(Basseterre, St. Kitts)- Special athletes from St. Kitts and Nevis will compete in various sporting disciplines at the National Games slated for Sunday, June 1 at the Silver Jubilee Athletic Stadium.

The event begins at 10:00 am and will be declared open by Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Education Honourable Sam Condor. A spokesperson for the local Special Olympics Association told SKNIS that this year’s annual competition has significant meaning as it marks a number of firsts.

“It’s the first time the competition will be held at the brand new Silver Jubilee Athletic Stadium, which hosted the 2008 CARIFTA Games, last March,” he said. “Also this marks the first time that the local gold medalists from the World Games held in Shanghai, China will be competing at such a large scale organized contest on the local level.”

The athletes will compete in track and field events and also bocce, which is making its debut in the Federation. The spokesman added that exhibition races have also been planned by the St. Kitts and Nevis Olympic Committee (SKNOC). He encouraged persons to go out to support the special athletes which brought home 15 gold medals from China.

There is no admission fee but donations are welcomed.
