St. Kitts won its 10th straight championship last weekend in the 2006 Leeward Islands Track and Field Youth meet in Nevis.
The meet was held at Grove Park.
Hundreds turned out to witness the event, which kicked off last Friday with an opening ceremony and parade of the teams.
Participating in the event were the top Leeward Islands’ athletes aged 15 and under.
A report on the event, posted on the Nevis Athletic Association website, said that the standard of organization, performance and crowd support ranked the meet as the one of the best sporting events in the Leeward Islands and one of the best youth meets in the Caribbean.
St. Kitts sent 36 athletes to compete against six Caribbean countries: Antigua/Barbuda, Anguilla, St. Martin, United States Virgin Islands and hosts Nevis.
More than 150 athletes participated.
Unfortunately this year, athletes from the British Virgin Islands and Montserrat were unable to attend the event.
A number of initiatives were implemented for the meet, including live radio coverage of the event.
There was also live video and audio streaming of the event over the Internet.
Also a colourful and detailed opening ceremony, using the full range of Nevisian cultural talents, was well executed.
The meet had a photo-finish system, officials workshops, electronic displays and a reception at Government House.
The teams competed in the 100m, 200m, 4x100m, 400m, 800m, high jump, long jump, cricket ball throw, shot put, 4x 400m, 1500m and 4x400m events.
Medals and trophies were awarded to the top three finishers in each individual event, and to the top three teams in the relay events.
