The Under 23 Community Netball League starts Saturday at Newtown playing field.

Eight teams will play in the month long league.

The teams are East Basseterre, West Basseterre, Cayon/keys, Sandy Point, St. Peters, Parsons, Molineaux and Project Strong.

East Basseterre is the defending champions.

According to Daislyn Sharpe, one of the organizers of the team, the objective of the out-of-season league is sharpen skills to prepare players for the start of the national league in April.

Sharpe said the Community League is organized by the Coca Cola Shamrocks netball team. She pointed out that players from Shamrock are playing on various teams in the community league.

“We are expecting competition to be of a high standard,” Sharpe said.

East Basseterre is once again expected to make a strong showing with sisters Shirmel and Sheriffa White leading the way.

However, Sharpe pointed out that St. Peters, West Basseterre and Cayon have reloaded their roster nicely, and are expected play very well.

Sharpe said players like Tenelle Lapsey, who has played on the national under-23 team, and Michelle Liburd of West Basseterre are expected to shine in the coming games.

“I am very excited about this league and I feel the teams are going to put on a very good show,” Sharpe said.

Sharpe said the league starts play 5 p.m. on Saturday at the Newtown playing field.

Organizers of the Community Netball Team are expecting spectacular play from the teams.
