St. Kitts and Nevis marks 43 years of independence today, September 19, commemorating the day in 1983 when the Federation became an independent nation.

This year’s observance is being held under the theme, “One People, One Vision, Endless Possibility: Independence 43.”

In his Independence Day address, Deputy Prime Minister Hon. Dr. Geoffrey Hanley reflected on the meaning of nationhood while highlighting areas of national development, including water security, energy independence, economic empowerment and resilience.

Hanley highlighted investments in water infrastructure, noting that reliable 24-hour water access has been extended to approximately 70 percent of the population.

He also pointed to measures including increases to the minimum wage, pension rights for government auxiliary employees and the launch of the Aspire programme, which promotes financial literacy among young people.

The address also touched on the Government’s Sustainable Island State Agenda (SISA), including renewable energy projects and efforts to modernise healthcare facilities.

Reflecting on the broader meaning of independence, Hanley said, “Independence therefore cannot only be measured by the passing of years… True independence must also be measured by our capacity to provide for our people to withstand shocks beyond our shores”

Linking his remarks to this year’s theme, he added: “If we can take salt water and turn it into a source of national security, then we can transform the challenges before us into possibility”

As St. Kitts and Nevis marks another year of independence, the anniversary provides an opportunity to reflect on the journey from 1983 to the present and the responsibilities that come with nationhood.

Forty-three years on, the Federation continues to write its story through the experiences and contributions of its people at home and abroad.

Happy 43rd Independence Day, St. Kitts and Nevis.
