Acting DPP To Be Appointed For Tomorrow’s Assizes LK Hewlett Story Updated: September 22nd 2015 at 9:20 am
Attorney General Vincent Byron Jr says an acting Director of Public Prosecutions will be appointed to replace Travers Sinanan by tomorrow’s (Sept 22) opening of the September Criminal Assizes. AG Byron had just concluded a financial settlement agreement with the former DPP, which paved the way for the government to have a new DPP appointed. Byron acknowledged that there was a significant backlog of criminal cases to be tried, the majority of which were brought forward from previous assizes. “Tomorrow…the September assizes is scheduled to begin and there are some 32 matters that were traversed from the May assizes. Only 4 matters were concluded then and 32 traversed and since then we have had an additional 16 matters added to those 32,” he said. The Attorney General assured that the Acting DPP will be duly qualified and will only hold the post temporarily until a new DPP can be assigned.
