Akil Martin of Tucker-Clarke Primary School in Newtown was announced as the winner of the 2007 Le Maris Junior Secondary Science Scholarship in St. Kitts.
Executive Director of Le Maris Life Enrichment Systems Dr. Lincoln Carty congratulated both the winners and parents.
“I would like to congratulate the winners of the 2007 Le Maris Science Scholarship. I would also like to add a note of thanks to the parents for sending the students to the seminar and to the students themselves for coming. I would like to thank all the other facilitators and the general public for their support which is much appreciated,” he said.
Last December, Le Maris Life Enrichment Systems hosted the 4th Students Success Seminar under the theme, We achieve Because We Believe. The seminar was held for Grade 6 students with the participating students also competing for the scholarship based on their performance in the Test of Standards Science exams.
This year, Raul Hope of Newton Ground Primary and Xuxa Hendrickson of Sandy Point Primary tied for the 1st runner-up position while Shani Reid of Sandy Point took 2nd place.
The winner was awarded all integrated science and agricultural science text books for the first three years of high school and the runners up received the same award but for the first year only.
Carty told The Observer that when the students reach the third form level, they can choose more advanced science subjects and the scholarship will still cover the text books.
“Once the winner reaches third form and he chooses to do a science, whether it be biology, physics or chemistry the books will still be provided,” he said.
Carty explained why Nevisian students were not in the running for the scholarship opportunity at the last seminar.
“It so happened that this year, because of the timing of the World Cup Cricket and our semester at the college, it was impossible for me to get that week off. Therefore, I was unable to go to Nevis and host a seminar there,” he said, adding that the scholarship programme will be repeated next year.
“I don’t think we shall have any kind of disruption like that again so I am looking forward to keeping one in Nevis next year. The intention is to continue the program both in St. Kitts and Nevis.
“I will also be in Nevis next week to present the cheques to the second former and third former from 2006 and 2005 who are both from Nevis,” he noted.
