The people of Nevis are expecting their next Nevis Island Assembly elections very soon. Sooner than the constitutionally due date of September 7, 2006

This can be attested to by the many rumours circulating the land about the impending date of the elections.

Despite all the hear say however, the leader of the ruling Concerned Citizens Movement (CCM) party and Premier of Nevis Vance Amory, irregardless of the many attempts by persons to entice him to slip the date holds firm.

Some believe the date of the next general elections would be June 28 others say May 28, others have said for sure this summer, whichever is the case Premier Amory has said that he is yet to ring the bell.

“When the time comes for us to ring the bell, we will ring it loud and clear for everyone to hear,” he said.

To those who have been announcing dates he said, “they do not control the bell.”

Last Sunday evening Amory while speaking at a Mothers’ Day bash at the Old Manor Hotel announced his party’s candidates for the upcoming elections.

Many of the mothers on Nevis last week were the recipients of special invitations and gifts to attend the afternoon of music at a cocktail reception hosted by the CCM party.

Sources indicate that those mothers who were invited to the event received a bedside alarm clock radio ‘such as those found on the besides of hotels “but nicer” in addition to her invitation to attend the event.’

At the event Premier Amory addressed the mothers’ gathered. He told them to feel good about the role they are playing, for they are responsible for the community.

He said, “I want to ask you to take seriously your responsibility of motherhood to ensure that our Nevis community continues to be the paradise which we want it to be.”

Premier Amory surprised the attendees to the bash when he announced Gene Herbert as the candidate for the St. Thomas’ Parish.

Leader of the opposition Nevis Reformation Party (NRP) Joseph Parry is currently holding the seat for that parish.

CCM currently holds four out of the five seats available in the Nevis Island Assembly.

The names of the other four candidates as announced are: Mr Malcolm Guishard for the St. John’s Parish, Jean Harris for St. James’ Parish, Michael Perkins for the Parish of St. Paul’s and Premier Amory for the St. Georges Parish.

Minister Guishard currently holds the portfolio of Deputy Premier and Minister of Tourism and Culture, Telecommunications and Information, Agriculture, Lands, Housing, Co-operatives and Fisheries and Minister Perkins holds that of Minister of Works, Physical Planning and Infrastructural Development, Public Utilities, Posts, Communications, Natural Resources and Environment.

Minister Harris proudly holds that of Minister of Health, Gender and Social Affairs and Minister Amory holds that of Premier of Nevis and Minister of Finance, Education and Library Services, Human Resources, Labour, Economic Planing and Development, Trade and Industry, Youth and Sports.

Following his announcement Premier Amory said that Nevis has experienced tremendous growth under his party’s watch.

The afternoon of music featured renditions by a number of local artistes including local gospel singer Eugene Brandy, Levi James, calypsonian King Meeko and guest artist from Trinidad and Tobago gospel singer Nicole Ballosingh Holder.
